2. After a lot of discussion, my group decided on
particular props that would be appropriate for the product.
On the following slides, there are a variety of images of
props that we own, have purchased or have found and so
can use again. Some of the props may be altered or may
not actually be used, but we have analysed why they could
be potentially used.
We thought this would be interesting to analyse what
props are appropriate because we found through research
that a lot of horror films include a main prop or item as an
icon for the piece and so we have found that if we do this
successfully, it will enhance our product to follow a lot of
horror film conventions.
3. Teddy Bear
Using a teddy bear as a prop portrays innocenceand enhances the use of a
child character in our product. We discussedthat the teddy could be tatty and
have a button missing for its eye – this could be to insinuate and emphasizethe
theme of evil and destruction within the film.
4. White Blouse
Although this tends to fall under the costume category,we have discussed using this
blouse as a prop also. We think that the use of white conveys a tone of innocence and
angelic stereotypes. An idea we have suggestedis that the blouse will become
stained throughoutthe trailer in order to portray the tarnishing of the young girl’s
personalityand her behaviour,so which will be used as a symbolic prop.
5. Mirror
Following common conventions of a horror film, we discovered many mirrors,
windows and other reflective objects are used within horror films. These can
be used to show revelations and alternatively, secrecy. We may use this prop
in order to show shadows and reflections in order to create a more horror-like
effect within the trailer.
6. Rosary Beads/Crucifix
After research,we discovered that in a lot of horrorfilms religion is a main theme.
Taking note of this, we found props that we could incorporate into our trailer/magazine
cover/posterand so we are able to use these and follow conventionsof general horror
films which we have watched and researched. At this point, we aren’t sure what the
meaning of these religious items is going to portray, but we are fowardly thinking of
ways in which we can make use of these.
7. Fire
We also found that fireplaces and fire in general are main conventions of horror
films and so we would like to make use of this ourselves. The fireplace
represents hell and pain which is another theme used in a great deal of horror
films and so we are thinking of incorporating this into our product. Preferably,
we would like a more old-fashioned fireplace (like the centre picture) because
we feel it will give a ‘scarier’effect.
8. Telephone
Telephones are commonly used in
other horror films and so we have
found different ways in which it can be
used. For example, we can portray a
tone of panic if the phone is left off the
line, and incorporated with the sound a
phone would make, this is a common
and successful horror film idea.
Grandfather Clock
Atheme of time and clocks are used
commonlyin horror films which is
something my group would like to use.
Themes of time running out and time
references are successfully used in horror
films and so we have decided to make
use of this. Used alongside this, the
sound of clocks ticking and chiming is
something which can create suspense
and tension in order to grip the audience.
