TOPIC: Pronouns: subject & object
In English, there are several types of pronouns. This review looks at two of them:
SUBJECT PRONOUNS and OBJECT PRONOUNS. Pronouns are words that are used to
substitute or go in place of nouns. For example, instead of saying “John is my friend,” you
can say “He is my friend.” “He” is a pronoun because it replaces the noun “John.” Consider
the difference between SUBJECT PRONOUNS and OBJECT PRONOUNS.

SUBJECT PRONOUNS
These can only be subjects of verbs. In most sentences, they are easy to find as they
appear before the verb.
EXAMPLES
1. Her and Bob came over to see me.
2. Me and my friend are taking a trip.
Notice the errors in each sentence.
1. “Her” should be “she” because it’s part of the subject for the verb “came.”
2. “Me” should be “I” because It is part of the subject for the verb “are taking.”
Both sentences must use “subject pronouns” as the subject.
OBJECT PRONOUNS
These can only function as the object of a verb, or as the object of a preposition.
EXAMPLES
1. We offered her a place to stay. (“Her” is the object of the verb “offered.”
2. Our neighbors are going with you and me. (“You and me” is the object of the
preposition “with.”
NOTE: Object pronouns go after verbs and prepositions. Subject pronouns usually go
before verbs.
