In English, nouns can refer to persons or things. In TOEFL exams, sometimes the person
is used in place of the thing. So, you’ll need to be able to tell the difference between when
the noun refers to a person and when it refers to a thing.

1. Ralph Nader is an authoritarian in the field of consumer affairs.
2. There are many job opportunities in accountant.
3. Many job opportunities exist in the field of nurse if you will accept a low-
paying position.
In No.1, “authoritarian” should be “authority” because it’s referring to a person.
In No. 2 “accountant” should be “accounting” because it’s referring to a thing, a career.
In No. 3, “nurse” should be “nursing” because it’s referring to career.
