The paired conjunctions (both … and, either … or, neither … nor, and not only … but also)
require parallel structures after them. The structures that go immediately after each
member of the pair must be equal.
Example:
I know both where you went and what you did.
The paired conjunction is: both … and. After “both” there’s a clause “where you went.”
After “and” it says “what you did.” Both expressions are written the same way. So, you’d
have to focus on what exactly goes after “each” word in the pair to make sure that they
are parallel.
Now look at this other example.
He wants either to go by train or by plane.
Observe what goes after “either” and after “or.” They are different structures. After
“Either,” it says “to go by train.” After “or,” there’s no “to go.” So, this sentence is not
parallel.
