NOTE THE FOLLOWING
EXPRESSIONS OF QUANTITY
- words that are used to tell the amount of something. They are usually followed by the
phrase “of something” where the word “something” refers to the thing being described.
Examples of such words of quantity are:
all some most half part none
PAY ATTENTION TO THE “OF” PART THAT FOLLOWS THESE WORDS: The object
that follows the “of” would determine if the verb should be in singular or plural.
All of the meal was delicious.
(Of the meal = singular; so it takes the singular verb “was.”)
Most of the meals were delicious.
(Of the meals = plural; so it takes the plural verb “were.”)
Some of the food was delicious.
(Of the food = uncountable noun; by default, it takes the singular verb “was.”)
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS: All uncountable nouns will take a singular verb.
Other nouns would be either SINGULAR or PLURAL and would take a singular or plural
verb accordingly.
_________
IN CONCLUSION: Pay attention to QUANTITY WORDS and what goes after the “of.” Use
that to determine how to accommodate the verb in terms of SINGULAR/ PLURAL.
