Insulin Resistance In Horses
Each year about 340 horses die due to effects of insulin resistance. That is almost half the deaths
caused by horse racing. If a horse or pony suffering from Insulin Resistance and they eat high sugar
feed, and eat normal, unsoaked hay the large increase in sugar may cause death or lead to serious life
threatening conditions. In horses that don t suffer from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s it wouldn t be
as great a concern if they got out and ate feed and hay, but thus act becomes life threatening and fatal
for horses and ponies suffering from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s. Insulin Resistance, Cushings,
and Endocrinopathic Laminitis are all very complex diseases that many experts are still gaining an
understanding for. Glucose, insulin, and cortisol are major factors not only in Insulin Resistance (IR)
and Cushings (PPID) as individual diseases, but they also serve to link the two diseases to
Endocrinopathic Laminitis in addition to each other. Insulin Resistance and ... Show more content on

The elevated levels of cortisol that occur as a result of PPID are believed to contribute to the
insensitivity of stimulation and the resistance of laminitis. When the cortisol is secreted by the
pituitary gland it interferes with the lamellar perfusing, causing a vasoconstrictive response in the
equine digital arteries to the catecholamines. Also a cortisol excess results in protein catabolism in the
skin, connective tissue, bone and skeletal muscle, impaired wound healing, muscle atrophy derived
data are pointing to the fact that inflammation leads a pivotal role in laminitis (Johnson). Some experts
also believe that stress can lead to a horse becoming laminitic because of the increased cortisol
secretion that occurs due to stress. Since Laminitis is so incredibly painful for the horses and ponies
affected it causes them to experience extreme stress, which in turn causes a dramatic spike in cortisol
levels

Reflection Paper On Ballet
Ballet has never been my strongest style, but I feel that I have been able to have become more of a
well rounded dancer. From the start I have wanted to gain so much with my goals as well as to find
ways to work on ways to make my movement quality softer. In ballet this semester gave me an
opportunity to focus on all of the goals that I wished to work on. Over the semester I have noticed that
I picked up a lot of material more than I thought when I do not overthink the material and not get
stressed out. In ballet this semester I noticed that I freaked out in class so much which reflected on my
technique and being able to be confident with my movement. At the beginning of this semester I
needed to work on trusting myself with movement material. This has been a struggle for me since day
one because I would always have some moments where I would not make a strong choice if I messed
up. As the semester started, I knew I did not want to be hesitant with performing the combinations in
class. There would often be times in class where I would look down instead of looking up especially at
the barre. At the barre I notice how hesitant I would be doing certain combinations making me worried
if I would be able to push myself to work harder the rest of the class. In class I just wanted to be able
to try the best of my ability to just perform the combinations to not overthink what comes next. I had a
tendency looking down instead of up which honestly does not help improve myself even more.

performance trends show a gradual increase in the number of falls and pressure ulcers. A closer look is
needed to identify reasons for the correlation between greater nursing hours and increased falls. This
may be due to a need for increase in nursing staff and limiting the number of hours the nurse can work

The Virginia Lottery Controversy
Although often assumed to be a debate of recent origins, the local Washington, DC newspapers have
published news items on the controversy many times since at least 1971, all in response to Native
American individuals or organizations asking for the name to be changed. An agency of the
commonwealth, the Virginia Lottery, is a sponsor of the team, and says it has never had any
complaints. With the possibility of building a new stadium in the near future, both the previous and
current mayors of the District of Columbia have stated that a name change must be part of the
discussion, however the team rejects that possibiltiy. The fact we re even talking about this is
nauseating. Unfortunately, it ended up just being stupid. I was hoping this article ... Show more

temperamental Kylo Ren, who delivered a major shocker 15 minutes into the film by killing Lor San

Perseverance
Overall Purpose/Theme:
The overall theme of the poem was Perseverance because the bird who has been thrown into the real
world must overcome all obstacles thrown its way to live a good life.
Evidence to support the theme:
1. Thomas Hardy writes and every spirit upon the earth seemed fervourless as I (15 16). Although this
sounds like the opposite of perseverance this is when the bird is actually realizing that it will be living
in this dark gruesome world and it needs to just suck it up and deal with it.
2. The author states That I could think there trembled through His happy good night air some blessed
hope (29 31). This quote shows the speakers hope for perseverance after hearing the birds insightful
song on how you will need to be prepared to take on the world and the only way is if you persevere
because the world will throw many obstacles your way and you need to be prepared for it.

The author states So little cause for carolings of such ecstatic sound was written on terrestrial things
(25 27). This statement is the basic meaning of pushing through obstacles thrown in the path of the
bird, it also shows how the bird overcame its fears by singling different songs.
Biographical context: Thomas Hardy born in Stinsford, Dorchester, Dorset, England on June 20th in
the year 1840. Thomas Hardy s inspiration of poetry is unknown but his enjoyed basing his works of
literature in the fictionalized county of Wessex. Thomas Hardy passed away on the date January 11,

The And Effect Of The Earned Income Tax Credit
Introduction
This report examines the provisions, purpose, and impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). It
will consider both positive and negative arguments for the program, and review suggested alternatives.
Finally, it will give supporting evidence as to why the EITC is a flawed, yet overall beneficial program
for the nation s war against poverty. As one of the most heavily debated tax issues since the 90s, the
EITC is an important anti poverty program that requires attention and understanding by all American
citizens.
In order to gauge the effectiveness of the EITC, it is important to understand what the EITC is, as well
as its purpose, and then measure current performance.
Provisions
The EITC is a tax credit for low to moderate income earning individuals and families. This credit is a
refundable tax credit, meaning that citizens may have their federal taxes lowered, brought to zero, or
even earn a refund if it exceeds the amount of taxes owed. The credit amount is dependent upon a
beneficiary s earned income and number of children. Earned income includes all the taxable income
and wages a person receives from working for someone else or if they own or run a business or farm.
In order to receive the tax refund, workers must file a tax return, even if their income is less than the
filing requirement. The EITC is structured with a phase in, meaning that as a taxpayer s income
increases, the value of the credit the taxpayer earns increases until it hits the maximum

Mirror By Edwin Arlington Robinson And Mirror
Identity defines a person s character, whether it is given by others or made by themselves. It carries
people to success but also pulls others into a whirlpool of failure and misery more often hardships than
not. Authors tend to write about such matters to bring them into light. Many stories and poems base
their entire themes and main ideas around the specific topic of identity. The poems Richard Cory by,
Edwin Arlington Robinson, and Mirror by, Sylvia Plath, for example, both use identity to tell an
emotional story but achieve it in various ways. Richard Cory utilizes social construct to let the reader
infer Richard uses the town s people in creating his identity. The people view Richard as a king and
even say they [think] he [is] everything (Robinson line 11). In addition, they are envious of his riches
and want nothing to do with him. Blinded by jealousy and ignorance of how he is thought to feel
about them, nobody attempts to befriend Richard, and they even avoid him. Furthermore, he is
imperially slim (Robinson line 3), a gentleman (Robinson line 4), quietly arrayed (Robinson line 5),
and many other redeeming qualities bundled together, making him much different from the town s
people. Being better than them in almost every way enforces their stereotype of the man Richard is.
Because the town s people must work, unlike Richard, they base his identity on their jealousy. Though
they see him as superior and do not speak to him, it is presumed Richard...

Legalizing the Drinking Age to 18
Legalizing the Drinking Age to 18 When people turn to the age of eighteen, they are finally considered
an adult. They can join the army, have the right to vote, buy cigarettes or tobacco products, get a tattoo
and even die for our country, but they aren t allowed to buy alcohol? A person can be responsible
enough to live on his or her own, make money, pay bills, and yet they are not old enough to purchase
or consume any type of alcohol. Underage drinking has been a major controversial issue for years.
Teenagers are continuing to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, drink, get into bars, and drink
illegally. As being a teenager, these things are going on not only in college, but also in high school.
There are a lot of factors as to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The MLDA also comes into play with why the drinking age should be lowered. Enforcing an MLDA
of 21 is expensive and inefficient. Setting the MLDA at 21 is unconstitutional because it is
discrimination against the particular age group of 18 20 year olds. IT would be more effective to spend
money on educating youth about alcohol than to spend it on enforcement of drinking laws for 18 20
year olds. The pie chart below shows the proportion of 83 countries MLDAs from ages 14 to 21.
People under the age of 21 see alcohol as a forbidden fruit. Forbidden fruit is described as, A badge of
rebellion against authority and a symbol of adulthood(Dr. Ruth Engs). If drinking is made legal for
people 18 and older, it will seem much better as the curiosity isn t as high and the fruit isn t forbidden
anymore. Responsibility and tolerance are two major things that should be addressed with lowering
the drinking age. Responsible drinking could be taught through role modeling and educational
programs. If the drinking age were to be lowered, mature and sensible drinking behavior would be
expected. Tolerance doesn t come with age, tolerance comes with

Federalism Essay
Federalism
The Constitution of the United States was drafted at a time when our country was in dire need of many
answers to political and social questions. In addition to many other things, the drafters of the
Constitution were concerned with solidifying our central government and the Constitution was
intended to provide a solid structure from which our burgeoning nation could grow. The Constitution
gave explicit powers to the federal government and provided the states with the Tenth Amendment
which states , Powers not delegated to the United States, nor prohibited to the states, are reserved to
the states respectively #8230; Of the enumerated powers given to the federal government by the

Dual Federalism also relies on the notion that in a court of law, the Tenth Amendment gives the states
enough support to declare unconstitutional any act of the national government that infringes on the
reserved powers given to the states. Cooperative Federalism provides an entirely different view of the
relationship between the federal and state governments. Federal supremacy is the hallmark of this
ideology. Supporters of the cooperative federalist view prefer to employ a broad interpretation of the
Constitution. The legal basis on which cooperative federalism has been argued is threefold: (1)
Enumerated powers (e.g. Commerce Clause) should be interpreted in light of an expansive Necessary
and Proper Clause (2) The Supremacy Clause, as prescribed in Article 6, paragraph 2, gives federal
actions supremacy over state laws when made in pursuance of the Constitution and when they are
made using implied and enumerated powers (3) The Tenth Amendment does not give states the power
to contest federal laws. To suggest that that these two ideologies are contradictory is an
understatement. To understand which theory best identifies with the correct interpretation of the
Constitution, it is necessary to understand the circumstances that created the necessity for a
Constitution and the political circumstances that motivated decisions contrary to the correct
interpretation of the Constitution. The

My Aspects Of Sports And Sports Events In My Life
The last time I went to a sports event was over a year ago. Reflecting back on that day I had a lot of
fun. I have been to many sports events throughout adolescences into my adult life. Watching the
games was not very fun to me. I went because it was recreational and I was able to bond and enjoy
time with whomever I attended the game with. I am very undecided about favorite teams and I am
very competitive, so I will watch whatever team that battles it out.
The day I attended that game, I was off from work and it was sunny and the weather was beautiful.
My best friend asked if wanted to go watch the eagles play. We called about five more friends to come
with us and we decided to tailgate. We bought pizzas, and beers and headed down to the stadium. As
we pull up and park we unloaded the food and beers. I brought the football out we ran routes in the
parking lot. The game had already begun but we were having too much fun at the time to pay
attention. Once we finished up with the football we started playing cornhole. You play the game by
taking a bean bag and throwing it in your opponent s basket and vice versa. We were preoccupied the
entire time we never went into the stadium to actually watch the football game. None of us even cared
because we been many times and we honestly had more fun with each other than sitting at watching
other people play.

Enron s Impact On Enron
In 1985, two companies, Houston Natural Gas, and InterNorth merged to form Enron. Kenneth Lay
wanted to create a company that can supply electricity and natural gas at a much lower price. As time
went on, Enron ranked as the nation s sixth largest energy company with global internet trading
commodities in plastics, steel, petrochemicals and waste water to name a few (Fusaro, 2000, p. 157).
From the time they merged to form Enron up to the point of their collapse, Enron s executive
committee had squandered many of the company s assets through bad strategies, hiding money, and
creating an illusion of a stable financial company.
Most of the top executives overstated Enron s earnings by several million dollars (Niskanen, 2005)
causing the company s stockholders to lose millions of dollars. Kenneth Lay who joined InterNorth,
later renamed Enron, in 1985 became the CEO the following year. In 1990, Kenneth Lay hired Jeff
Skilling to work in the operations department. Jeff Skilling would eventually take over Enron in 2001
as there Chief Executive Officer, replacing Kenneth Lay (Zimmerli, Richter, Holzinger, 2007, p. 131).
There was no oversight in Enron s top managerial positions. Most of Enron s top executives controlled
all the schemes and allowed the accounting to create fraudulent documents to hide the losses from
investors. Enron was a public company which was run by Kenneth Lay and Jeffery Skilling. They
made up the top executive board which dealt in providing the means and

children lose these devices we expect they perhaps will do something healthy or active, but honestly
they merely devote themselves to reuniting with their phones. Teenagers won t sleep until they have it
back their hands. I would understand after all, I am one of those teenagers consumed by my phone.
Once, I misplaced it, and spent the next two hours of my life focused solely on locating my phone,
that is how precious it is to me. It started one afternoon when I was riding my bike with my friends
and I had just popped a fresh piece of gum in my mouth. As the fresh mint swirled around in my
mouth, I recalled that my mom needed me home by 4:30 pm, so I reached in my pocket to check the
time on my phone. I feel around, but nothing is there except for some ancient pocket lint. I slammed
on my breaks and immediately assumed the worse. I lost it in a gutter somewhere, so I retraced my
steps to the nearest opening in the gutter. As I bent down to peer into the storm sewer it smelled like
someone had thrown up on a dead squirrel. No phone in the gutter, so before long I assumed that one
of my friends had stolen it from me. I began yelling and acting like it wasn t a playful joke anymore,
but none of them had it. I biked home like Speedy Gonzalez, and sprinted to my room, tearing

Synthesis Of Grignard Reagent And Benzaldehyde
Introduction: This experiment involved the synthesis of diphenylmethanal from phenylmagnesium
bromide which is a Grignard reagent, and benzaldehyde which is a carbonyl group. The goal of this
experiment was to investigate the ability of the Grignard reaction to yield the theoretical predicted
product and evaluate its efficiency. The Grignard reaction is an important reaction because of its
ability to allow the formation of carbon carbon bonds. These formations of C C sigma bonds, then
allow for the formation or making of large or complex synthetic molecules from very simple reagents.
These complex molecules are then used in many different areas such as the pharmaceutical industry.
Also, one must note that Grignard reagents are strong nucleophiles that can attack carbonyl groups
that can form substituted alcohols after the protonation step. The reaction occurred as follows. The
first step consisted in the formation of the Grignard reagent. That was done through the use of an
organic halide provided in the lab and Magnesium. The organic halide used was bromobenzene. The
second step consisted of reacting the Grignard reagent formed in the first step with benzaldehyde. The
third and final step consisted of using the product of the second step and diluting it with HCl
(Hydrochloric Acid). Finally, the product obtained of this whole reaction was diphenylmethonal (
please refer to the drawing below for a more visual approach). The creation of this product can also be

Race Theories And Its Consequences
Race has evolved through the scientific endeavor to forward knowledge, from a categorisation of
people based on geographic origin and physical traits, to a hierarchical concept that is used as a tool to
racially vilify, discriminate and marginalize particular races. The term race was introduced in the 16th
century and referred to a group category of people (Smedley, 1999). From then, the concept of race
was scrutinized and redefined by the western world. America bought about the concept of race present
in modern day, however the intellectual framework that served as a guide was European (Brace,
2005). Understanding of the evolution of race theories and its consequences are crucial to analyse how
contemporary Indigenous Peoples are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the use of visual art to portray ideas is more connected to Indigenous cultures than imposed
western political and academic settings. This essay will critically discuss the work of Carl Linnaeus,
Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and Charles Darwin in defining race and its application to Indigenous
Australians. Followed by, analysis of the works of contemporary artists, Richard Bell, Bindi Cole,
Bronwyn Bancroft, Daniel Boyd, Michael Riley, Gordon Bennett and Lin Onus in challenging the
effects social constructions of race have had on Indigenous peoples. These issues include authenticity,
homogenous stereotyping, racial hierarchy and discrimination.
Carolus Linnaeus (1707 78), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, is known for his taxonomic
system, which laid the foundations of the modern biological categorization (Brace, 2005). His
ambition was to make order the chaos of biological life based on distinctiveness and established
categories of generic and specific names. It divided humans into six categories; four based on
geographic location, and Homo ferus (wild man) and homo monstrosus (monster man) (Fish, 2011).
He further tried to make scientific sense of life by assigning traits to each of these categories. Racial
stereotyping has derived from this concept of Linnaeus taxonomy, with static conceptions of a
particular race that does not allow for individual variation and intergradations (Fish, 2011). Australia
was colonized at a time

British Slave Trade
Slavery also increased British exports. As a result of the increased productivity and profits made from
slavery, the average British consumer had more money to spend on goods that cost less. These forces
helped to revive a slowing British economy and increased capital flows throughout the British Empire.
Cheap labor resulted in cheaper goods, and the British consumer was rewarded. As British industries
gained more profits from slave institutions, they also expanded their markets. With the benefits
achieved from slavery, British industry sold more goods to more people in more locations. Sales of
commodities also became more common, enabling further economic development. Empirically, the
raw tonnage of exports from England increased fourfold from 1715 to 1775. The ... Show more

Almost every major British industry benefitted from the increased productivity created by slavery.
Gun manufacturing was one of the first major industries to receive direct benefits from the slave trade.
Guns and slaves increased in direct proportion to each other. Guns, which were a relatively advanced
technology in the late 1700s, were given to African slave traders for African slaves, since African
slave owners desired guns and gunpowder to protect their kingdoms from other rival tribes. Guns were
highly sought after by African slave traders and could be traded for more slaves than any other good.
Whatley of Stanford suggests that it would only cost around 3.5 to 4.5 pounds sterling worth of
gunpowder to purchase a slave, but would cost nearly 40 pounds sterling to buy a slave using any
other good. That huge difference between gunpowder and the alternative trade item shows how much
more value slave traders placed on guns and gunpowder than other goods. As a result, it made more
economic sense to use guns and gunpowder to purchase

Snopes In Barn Burning
Family is the core of society. It is within this nurturing environment that hopes and dreams are
constructed and allowed to grow. Children learn the basic moral values and the socially acceptable
codes of conduct necessary for later life, but they can also absorb unacceptable behaviors by
observing those around them. In Barn Burning, William Faulkner chronicles the life of Abner Snopes,
and the less than perfect relationship he has with his relatives and son, Sartoris. Snopes is a very bitter
and discontented man, one who is envious of his rich land owning neighbors. As a rather violent man,
he has an insatiable desire to control people, and instill fear in their hearts.
Despite his shortcomings, the theme of family loyalty is brought into perspective by Snopes. He
values his familial bonds above all else, even the law. Snopes believes that every family should stand
up for each other, no matter the situation or differences they may have. Unfortunately for his family
(especially his son), Snopes often fails to live up to this ideal. After the court proceedings, Sartoris is
stuck by individuals within the crowd, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of his books are uniquely characterized by lengthy sentences with frequent interruptions by
clauses. Barn Burning is no exception to the collection of his works. In this book, many of the
sentences do not actually end in a conclusive idea; it is common to find sentences that end with a
different idea than what was assumed at the beginning of the statement. An example of this is shown
in the sentence: The wagon went on, the store with its quiet crowd of grimly watching men dropped
behind; a curve in the road hid it. (333) Faulkner begins describing how the Snopes family was
leaving the store, but he does not end the sentence expectedly, as he instead states how the corner hid
their wagon from the view of the men watching

Matthew And Luke Compare And Contrast
The Synoptic Gospels paint a picture of the life, ministry and death of the Savior Jesus Christ. Each
book has several of the same accounts recorded, they differ in small ways but the summary is the
same. Then we come across details, important vivid details, in one book such as Matthew that aren t
found in Luke. Matthew and Luke both spend a significant amount of time with Jesus and their
accounts of this are invaluable. It s important to our faith and the History of Jesus to compare these
books and use them together to see the entire picture of the Jesus Christ. This paper will explain a few
of the differences and the significance of these differences in Matthew and Luke.
As we read the genealogies given by Matthew and Luke we immediately see some differences. The
genealogies are not a contradiction to one another; they are laid out differently because Luke and
Matthew are addressing different audiences. Matthew, writing to a primarily Jewish audience,
emphasizes that Jesus Christ is the seed of Abraham and the legal heir of David, the long awaited King

How Does Lady Macbeth Show The Power Of Ambition
Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a powerful tragedy that tells the story of a man named Macbeth
who goes through an inner conflict between attempting to control fate and allowing fate to run its
course. Macbeth receives prophecies from three witches that prophesize that he will become king in
the future. In this tragedy, Shakespeare introduces Lady Macbeth, an ambitious and intelligent core
character who helps to represent this conflict that Macbeth goes through. As a character, Lady
Macbeth epitomizes the power of ambition and how it can create the desire for the ability of ensuring
the future. Lady Macbeth accepts the prophecies with open arms and starts immediately planning how
she can make the prophecies happen quickly. Once Lady Macbeth finds out about the prophecies, she

Comparing Madonna And Child On The Crescent Moon
Throughout history, there has been consistent production of images of the Virgin Mary, often with or
holding the baby Jesus. Though the subject matter has remained the same, the methods and techniques
of these depictions have been subject to change. Sculptures of the Renaissance featured similar
structural and visual elements, even when created in different countries, several years apart. When
Virgin and Child, a French sculpture from the 1300 s, is compared to Madonna and Child on the
Crescent Moon, a German sculpture from the 1500 s, techniques and elements typical of the
Renaissance are found in both. Virgin and Child, from the abbey church of Saint Denis, is a French
sculpture that was created between 1324 and 1339, gifted to the abbey ... Show more content on

The majority of similarities are found in their visual and formal structure due to the sculptures shared
time period of the Renaissance. Virgin and Child and Madonna and Child on the Crescent Moon are
both representational and realistic, but neither of their realism goes far enough to become naturalism.
The use of the s curve and the great attention that was given to crafting the small details in the folds of
the fabric of both sculptures is greatly indicative of the influence of the Renaissance. The content and
pose of the sculptures also share similarities. The most obvious lies in the subjects of the sculpture:
Mary holding the baby Jesus. In both sculptures, Jesus caresses his mother s face. This act humanizes
Mary and her child, and creates an emotional expression that was unusual for religious sculptures
created before that time. Though the objects depicted are not the same, the sculptures include an
additional element that is full of symbolism: the fleur de lys and a crescent moon. The cultural and
historical contexts of these pieces are where the differences between the two returns. Virgin and Child
was a religious sculpture intended for a religious space, and served an additional purpose as a
reliquary. Madonna and the Child on the Crescent Moon becomes the opposite of Virgin and Child,

Consequently, it is apparent that some benefits can be derived from multiculturalism in an urban city

With this gain come also the down side of life. Growth in the population can also lead to other factors
that can have adverse effect on the population growth; overcrowding, unemployment, human traffic
and a lot more. Therefore in order to minimise the extent of such problem, a lot of housing projects

Mark David Chapman and The Cather in the Rye
On December 8, 1980, John Lennon of the Beatles was shot and killed outside of his apartment
complex in New York City. The man who shot Lennon, Mark David Chapman, was found just a few
feet away from Lennon s body, reading The Catcher in the Rye. Unbecomingly, Chapman used the
book as his excuse for murdering Lennon. In court, Chapman used the novel as his statement and even
signed his copy of the novel as Holden Caulfield, the novel s protagonist, believing himself to actually
be Caulfield. Because of this, John Lennon and the book will be eternally connected. However,
Lennon s death is not the only parallel to be drawn between Holden Caulfield and Lennon; the
similarities between Holden and Lennon are almost uncanny. Their views on religion are virtually
identical; and if they were to be switched, one would be unable to distinguish one from the other.
Among other things, the two both suffered from very significant losses in their families, Lennon
having his mother die and Caulfield, his younger brother. Both of these events seriously shaped their
views on life and their behaviors. Lastly, they both dealt with rejection throughout their lives; Holden
feels rejected by just about every person he meets and John Lennon s father left him when he was only
five years old, which later proves to be an emotionally crippling event in his life. In all, Holden and
Lennon share a mutual fate in their similarities and will be forever connected by the horrendous act

Pearl Harbor Deception
On the morning of December 7, 1941, U.S. commanders at Pearl Harbor were caught off guard when
Japan executed one of the most remarkable examples of military deception in world history. While the
mainland Americans went about their normal Sunday activities, the Empire of Japan was in the
process of launching a world changing event. The attack on Pearl Harbor set into motion a series of
events that unified America and most importantly shaped a nation.
The American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese navy and air force
because of the economic sanctions and embargos placed on Japan by the United States government.
The tension between the United States and Japan were very high. Japan had forcefully expanded into

the single largest ethnic group there (Daniels 245). In the months before the Pearl Harbor attack, the
presence of so many Japanese Americans made it easy for Japanese spies to move freely about the
island. The numbers also made the U.S. officials fearful of sabotage by Japanese Americans loyal to
Japan (Daniels 240 241). Many Americans were angered over the attack, which sparked deep
suspicion of many innocent Japanese. The hysteria caused the U.S. government to establish
internment camps for U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry who were forced to leave their homes, sell
most of their belongings, and head to the camps (PBS, The War at Home). War with Japan stirred fears
of sabotage or spying by Japanese agents already in the country. Roosevelt s order of more than

Organic Foods Vs Organic Food
As the world continues to embrace health and fitness living and as the levels of environmental
awareness increase, so does the popularity of organic foods continue to skyrocket. According to a
recent survey conducted by a renowned body in the United States, more than forty percent of the US
consumers are now taking the organic foods path over the inorganic, and it seems that this new wave
is not going away anytime soon. According to most of the users, organic food is much tastier, safer,
helps to prevent environmental exploitation and on top of it all boasts more nutritional value than
inorganic food (Thøgersen 172). However, there is no difference in dietary levels between organic and
inorganic food, and this discussion examines what sets these two categories apart and why their
nutritional levels are the same.
Organic food is any product produced by a farming system which does not incorporate the use of
human made fertilizers and pesticides, livestock feed additives or growth regulators. According to
Cooper, Leifert, and Ursula (45), organic food uses natural methods of agriculture which aim at giving
a product which is environmentally friendly, economically viable and also socially healthy. For
instance below are some of the practices which organic farmers engage in to ensure that they meet this
objective (Harper and Aikaterini 290). Rather than use human made fertilizers, the organic food
farmers use plant and animal manure to increase the soil quality. For example,

In The Loop And Mid-Term Break By Seamus Heaney
In the Loop by Bob Hicok and Mid Term Break by Seamus Heaney are comparable in terms of their
symbolic titles, speaker s perspective, and tragic themes. These two poems diverge only in their
physical structure, as neither has rhyme nor meter.
Both Hicok s and Heaney s poems have seemingly misleading titles that hold significant symbolic
meaning upon closer inspection. Taking Hicok s In the Loop into consideration: the phrase in the loop
pertains to the idea of being kept up to date on various information while within a social circle. Hicok
completely reworks this phrase in his poem by altering the idea of what it means to be informed, as
well as adding a foreboding undertone to the familiar phrase. After the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech
on April 16, 2007, citizens of the United States were in the loop once news of the massacre flooded
various forms of the media; this informed people directly connected to the incident, including students
and faculty, as well as other civilians. Hicok also uses the expression in the loop to describe the
vicious cycle of grieving that occurs to those connected to a tragedy. He recounts the feelings of
emptiness that are experienced by those who grieve a recent misfortune: I answered these messages:
there s nothing to say back except of course there s nothing to say, thank you for your willingness to
say it. Because this was about nothing. A boy who felt that he was nothing, who erased and entered
that erasure (8 13)
In these six lines, Hicok describes how he responded to those that reached out to him after the
massacre at Virginia Tech; he appreciated the shared understanding that sometimes nothing can besaid
in the face of such catastrophe. He then articulates the void felt by those that had any connection to the
tragedy. Finally, Hicok conveys that the perpetrator of this heinous act, Seung Hui Cho, ended the
lives of 32 students and faculty members because he was a boy who felt that he was nothing (12).
The title of Heaney s Mid Term Break also misguides the reader in a similar fashion. The phrase mid
term break prompts the reader to imagine time spent with family, away from the pressure of academic
stress

How Does Willy Russell Create Mood and Atmosphere in the...
In the Summer Sequence Willy Russell s three main protagonists are shown to grow up from the ages
of 15 to 18, thus becoming adults throughout the song. This means that the sequence acts as a
watershed in the respect that it marks a major turning point in the play. This is shown through the
atmosphere that Russell creates, which goes from fairly positive, hopeful tone to a more cynical and
desperate one over the duration of the sequence. Russell uses several techniques to create these
atmospheres throughout.
In the opening of the Summer Sequence the atmosphere is clearly a happy one, which is shown by
Russell by using words like young, free and innocent to describe the characters. In this section, the
word innocent is used twice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This explicitly refers to the brothers fate in a way in which the last section didn t, so the tone is far
more marred by the eventuality of their deaths. This date is also referenced when Russell extends the
metaphor, fate the later seasons bring , which causes the audience to remember the scene at the very
beginning of the play, preventing them from being drawn into the initial happiness of the three
teenagers in this sequence. Again, it refers to Linda being caught in the middle of the pair,
foreshadowing their final argument.
It also refers to Linda paying a price , a theme that was initially shown in the song Easy Terms , sung
by Mrs Johnstone, and in both cases foreshadows the price they ll have to pay for their involvement in
the twins lives. The music becomes far more serious and sinister, a repetitive tense note with no actual
melody.
In the next section a recurring theme is shown with the references to time. This creates a sad,
melancholic atmosphere, as the audience is aware of the character s significant lack of time together,
but the characters are not, so their happy unawareness and this dramatic irony is slightly poignant.
Again, fate is reference by the narrator care not for what s at the end of the day , again forcing the
audience to remember the fate of the boys, this

Modern Era And Its Impact On Society
A large percentage of ancient societies were developed around the concept of patriarchy. Maintaining
these societies was a man s work, females were solely there for childbearing purposes. Certain
Northern African societies defied societal norms of the time without consciously understanding that
they were doing so. Civilizations such as the Tuareg, Berbers and Egyptians all formed gender equal
societies. The men and women of these societies lived separate lives, each with their own distinct
duties. Despite these differences they were understood to be equal at a fundamentally basic level that
other groups of the time did not comprehend. Women in select ancient North African societies were
valued by their cultures and given significant duties in their civilization which saw them as equal
members.
Matriarchy can be defined as A society in which women not only have equality with men, but also
control, power and dominance or additionally the exact opposite of patriarchy. It has been
significantly debated by researchers whether or not matriarchal societies ever existed. This doubt is
primarily based upon the lack of matriarchal societies in modern era and a significant lack of primary
sources from the generations where these societies could have existed. Northern African societies such
as Egyptians, Berbers and Tuaregs had a system of equality in their cultures, whether matriarchal,
patriarchal or neither. These societies were not based upon women nor men ruling them,

Introduction The company (BIMS) Ballard Integrated Managed Services, Inc. is a company that does
housekeeping and food service for many companies. The company has come up with some issues in

as to why the turnover rate has risen so much. They have failed to find the origin of the problem.
Another problem is that the morale in the company is low, and the sick leave is increasing.
Management is determined to figure out what is causing the problem to find a solution. An approach

employees to express how they feel with their employment. Communication is also pointed out in the
survey, to see how communication is between employee and management. These questions have to be
answered by circling a number from one to five. One for very negative and five for very positive. That

there is one that the employee has to state what sex they are either male or female, also about how

and see that there was a small communication between employee and manager. Also another point is
that there are many hours assigned to workers and they are not satisfied with the pay.
Levels of measurement BIMS used nominal, ordinal, and interval levels of analysis in the survey. In
the Nominal level there was classification done. Then followed the ordinal level, which took care of

Interview With Soft Skills
If asked in an interview what soft skills you possess, most people would say the obvious ones such as
friendliness, hardworking, punctual, team player, etc. but in today s business world you will have to be
much more convincing than that. Most of us would tell a potential employer those skills that we

for more. Soft skills are increasingly sought out by employers in addition to standard qualifications.
Soft skills are behavioral competencies. Also known as interpersonal skills or people skills (Pazhani

percent of women who were subjected to the unwanted sexual contact indicated the maximum
behavior they encountered was unwanted sexual touching, this was at 32 percent, and attempted sex

So the question is where would these crimes take place? The majority of the unwanted sexual contact

SHARP (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention). This is after the victim has tried to resolve
the issue by letting the perpetrator or perpetrators know that this type of behavior is not warranted, not
appreciated or welcomed. If the unwanted behavior continues, then is the next step would be to file an

New York Times V. Sullivan Case Study
New York Times v. Sullivan was a landmark case which dictated the outcomes of many subsequent
cases. However, after the Supreme Court s unanimous ruling in favor of the New York Times in 1964,
Justice Brennan s opinion raised just as many if not more questions than it had answered. In fact,
many justices struggled with how to make sense of the ruling and how it could be applied in both
similar and different contexts. While this case was a crucial turning point in the application of First
Amendment protection in libel cases, this ruling was by no means an end all to our understanding of
free expression and the protection of it. This was demonstrated in cases concerning private versus
public figures, through self censorship and in the operation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Sullivan case, it is unlikely that he imagined the extent to which his words were to have such a huge,
lasting impact on the American idea of free expression. While this ruling did not eliminate all
confusion, dissent, adaptation or scrutiny, it did shape decades of court rulings and First Amendment
interpretation and is still important to this day. While our understanding of free expression, protection
of the press, and libel law is neither complete nor perfect, one cannot deny that this case broke new
ground and influenced the opinions of justices, lawyers, media entities and the public

Strengths In Mark Bowden s Black Hawk Down
Violence, death, profanity. Usually a book containing these subjects, along with many other disturbing
aspects, would not be recommended for teenagers to read. However, looking past all of those details,
Black Hawk Down actually has valuable lessons within it. The author, Mark Bowden, writes about the
Battle Of Mogadishu that occurred from December 1992 to October 1993, and includes useful
information within his novel. He focuses on the truth about war, weaknesses and strengths within it,
and also lessons that can be learned from these subjects. The subject of war is often romanticized.
Video games, movies, and even some other books as well cut out a lot of truth about war, because
people tend to be afraid of telling the truth. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are quite a few positive characteristics within the troops as well that make up for the mistakes
they may have made. One main one is that they always have each others backs. The Deltas look after
the Rangers, and act as their role models. It was as if the Rangers saw the D Boys as their big brothers,
and since their big brothers were around, everything would be okay (Bowden 234). This shows the
bond between the troops, and adds emotion to the novel. Another characteristic is that the older
soldiers try to be positive throughout the war, even if situations got tough. Smith was now asking the
medic to tell his parents and family good bye . . . Hold on tight, Schmid told the dying corporal. We re
working on getting you out of here (Bowden 238). There are also some points within the novel that
show soldiers making jokes about their situation, instead of letting it bring them down and get the best
of them. The final trait is that even throughout all of the horrors the two teams went through during
the war, they still did their best and pushed through until it was finally over. There s no doubt that the
perception people have of this episode is that it was a total fiasco. Bowden says. But this was a
successfully completed mission. And in the eyes of the military men involved, it s a mission they re
very proud of (EDIT). So even though these teams saw, heard, and participated in horrifying events, in

What Are The Major Challenges Facing Homeless Families
While many consider homelessness to vary in meaning, I consider homelessness to be when one lives
out in the elements of mother nature, no shelter at all. For this reason, no Beth and her children were
not homeless, they had protection from the elements. Major challenges that confront professionals
working with homeless families are: keeping in contact with the family and getting the best resources
for them. The first objective to working with a homeless family would be to get them stable living
conditions, a permanent address. With this, a professional would have an easier time at getting the
necessary resources this family needs. Such as, the necessities of life, food and shelter.
Resources which might help the homeless are: The HUD exchange,

The Collapse Of Enron Corporation
Introduction:
The abrupt and unanticipated collapse of Enron Corporation was due to one of the largest accounting
frauds in U.S. history. This scandal had significant impact on the financial markets by causing
enormous financial losses for numerous investors. Before filing for Chapter 11 reorganization
bankruptcy protection in December of 2001, Enron was named the Most Innovative Company in
America by Fortune Magazine from 1996 to 2001, and also named first in 1999 on its list of the 100
Best Companies to Work For in America (McLean Elkind, 2006). For many years, this Houston based
energy company was widely regarded as a fast growing, well managed, and prosperous organization.
However, after years of manipulating accounting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, Enron went from concentrating on the energy market to brokering future energy
contracts and exploring other ways to make money.
One of the ways Enron tried to make more capital was to act as an intermediary that would pledge for
stable prices. In 1990, Jeff Skilling, a Harvard graduate, joined the company and ran an innovative,
differentiation strategy called Gas Bank (Thomas, 2002). Basically, the plan entailed Enron
purchasing natural gas from suppliers and selling it to customers. This strategy allowed the company
to guarantee both the price and needed supply while also charging fees for typical risks associated
with the business model. From the success of that energy derivative concept, Enron expanded it to bet
against the risk of price fluctuation for other commodities, such as: coal, steel, water, power
generation, and, around the dot.com boom, offered fiber optic cable (Healey Palepu, 2003). This
decision to expand its trading option is the reason why many credited it as being an innovative
organization. Another key factor to its early success was Enron s change in accounting systems. The
company had previously been using a straightforward system that would just list actual profits and the
expenses for supplying and distributing the gas to consumers. Skilling spearheaded the transition to a
new method called mark to market (Fox, 2004). This accounting system allows Enron

Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Lifecycle of a Butterfly Introduction Lifecycle refers to the stages of growth and development of a
living thing. All living things go through different stages of development throughout their lives.
Change in actions and behaviors are deeply associated with the changes in the stages of life. Butterfly
is such an insect, which has a complete lifecycle consisting of four separate stages. In this paper, we
will discuss the lifecycle of a butterfly in order to get an understanding of all stages of growth and
development of a butterfly. Stages of Development A butterfly s growth and development process is
known as metamorphosis. There are four stages of development in the life of a butterfly. Each stage is

The head, thorax, legs, swollen abdomen, and wings come out of the shell one by one. A butterfly rests
for a while in order to let its structures become dry and hard. Once the structures of a newly emerged
butterfly become hard, it becomes ready to fly. A butterfly usually lives for two to three weeks.
However, there exist some types of butterfly, which can live for months. Conclusion Summing it up,
all living things go through different stages of development, which represent their lifecycles. A
butterfly has four stages of life, which include egg stage, caterpillar stage, pupa stage, and the adult
butterfly stage. A butterfly shows different nature and habits in each stage of life. An adult butterfly
represents the last stage of a butterfly s lifecycle in which a butterfly becomes ready to fly. References

Uranium in Geobacter and Its Effects Essay
Just as Geobacter species have been utilized as a means for bioremediation in Rifle Mill, Colorado, so
too can they be implemented in the Navajo Nation to metabolize soluble uranium found in
underground water sources. Uranium (U) is a radioactive element which in its soluble form (VI)
causes a multitude of serious health conditions (Craft et al, 2004). Uranium is present in the
environment as a result of leaching from natural deposits and emissions from the nuclear industry
(WHO, 2003). Uranium salts present in a water supply can be an extreme detriment to public health as
the majority of human consumption of soluble uranium can occur through a contaminated water
source (WHO, 2003). In recent years microbes have been investigated as well ... Show more content

In strains which expressed pili the uranium precipitated along the conductive pili, away from the
cellular envelope. Geobacter species have been successfully implemented in bioremediation
techniques in multiple locations. Rifle Mill in Colorado is a uranium mill site where uranium
contamination in subterranean aquifers is prevalent. In situ stimulation in Geobacter species via
acetate (1 to 3 mM) which was injected over a period of 3 months yielded promising results. Within
50 days U (VI) levels had declined below the prescribed treatment level of 0.18 micro M in some of
the monitoring wells (Lovely et al, 2003). Acetate has been shown to stimulate growth of Geobacter
species in situ (Rifle, CO). This was substantiated by the transcriptional activity of putative symporter
genes (apII and apIII) at low levels of acetate. The study showed that apIII transcript activity was at its
highest level when acetate was at its lowest concentrations. Although these experimental findings are
not concrete evidence that acetate supports growth of Geobacter species it definitely suggests it
(lovely et al, 2010). The Navajo Nation is plagued with the remnants of abandoned uranium mines.
Over 500 mines exist within the Navajo nation (Navajo Uranium Report, 2013). According to the

  • 2. Insulin Resistance In Horses Each year about 340 horses die due to effects of insulin resistance. That is almost half the deaths caused by horse racing. If a horse or pony suffering from Insulin Resistance and they eat high sugar feed, and eat normal, unsoaked hay the large increase in sugar may cause death or lead to serious life threatening conditions. In horses that don t suffer from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s it wouldn t be as great a concern if they got out and ate feed and hay, but thus act becomes life threatening and fatal for horses and ponies suffering from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s. Insulin Resistance, Cushings, and Endocrinopathic Laminitis are all very complex diseases that many experts are still gaining an understanding for. Also a cortisol excess results in protein catabolism in the skin, connective tissue, bone and skeletal muscle, impaired wound healing, muscle atrophy derived data are pointing to the fact that inflammation leads a pivotal role in laminitis (Johnson). Some experts also believe that stress can lead to a horse becoming laminitic because of the increased cortisol secretion that occurs due to stress. From the start I have wanted to gain so much with my goals as well as to find ways to work on ways to make my movement quality softer. In ballet this semester gave me an opportunity to focus on all of the goals that I wished to work on. Over the semester I have noticed that I picked up a lot of material more than I thought when I do not overthink the material and not get stressed out. In ballet this semester I noticed that I freaked out in class so much which reflected on my technique and being able to be confident with my movement. At the beginning of this semester I needed to work on trusting myself with movement material. This has been a struggle for me since day one because I would always have some moments where I would not make a strong choice if I messed up. As the semester started, I knew I did not want to be hesitant with performing the combinations in class. There would often be times in class where I would look down instead of looking up especially at the barre. At the barre I notice how hesitant I would be doing certain combinations making me worried if I would be able to push myself to work harder the rest of the class. In class I just wanted to be able to try the best of my ability to just perform the combinations to not overthink what comes next. I had a tendency looking down instead of up which honestly does not help improve myself even more. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It will consider both positive and negative arguments for the program, and review suggested alternatives. Finally, it will give supporting evidence as to why the EITC is a flawed, yet overall beneficial program for the nation s war against poverty. As one of the most heavily debated tax issues since the 90s, the EITC is an important anti poverty program that requires attention and understanding by all American citizens. In order to gauge the effectiveness of the EITC, it is important to understand what the EITC is, as well as its purpose, and then measure current performance. It carries people to success but also pulls others into a whirlpool of failure and misery more often hardships than not. Authors tend to write about such matters to bring them into light. Many stories and poems base their entire themes and main ideas around the specific topic of identity. The poems Richard Cory by, Edwin Arlington Robinson, and Mirror by, Sylvia Plath, for example, both use identity to tell an emotional story but achieve it in various ways. Richard Cory utilizes social construct to let the reader infer Richard uses the town s people in creating his identity. The people view Richard as a king and even say they [think] he [is] everything (Robinson line 11). In addition, they are envious of his riches and want nothing to do with him. Blinded by jealousy and ignorance of how he is thought to feel about them, nobody attempts to befriend Richard, and they even avoid him. Furthermore, he is imperially slim (Robinson line 3), a gentleman (Robinson line 4), quietly arrayed (Robinson line 5), and many other redeeming qualities bundled together, making him much different from the town s people. Being better than them in almost every way enforces their stereotype of the man Richard is. Because the town s people must work, unlike Richard, they base his identity on their jealousy. Supporters of the cooperative federalist view prefer to employ a broad interpretation of the Constitution. The legal basis on which cooperative federalism has been argued is threefold: (1) Enumerated powers (e.g. Commerce Clause) should be interpreted in light of an expansive Necessary and Proper Clause (2) The Supremacy Clause, as prescribed in Article 6, paragraph 2, gives federal actions supremacy over state laws when made in pursuance of the Constitution and when they are made using implied and enumerated powers (3) The Tenth Amendment does not give states the power to contest federal laws. The day I attended that game, I was off from work and it was sunny and the weather was beautiful. My best friend asked if wanted to go watch the eagles play. We called about five more friends to come with us and we decided to tailgate. We bought pizzas, and beers and headed down to the stadium. As we pull up and park we unloaded the food and beers. I brought the football out we ran routes in the parking lot. The game had already begun but we were having too much fun at the time to pay attention. Once we finished up with the football we started playing cornhole. You play the game by taking a bean bag and throwing it in your opponent s basket and vice versa. We were preoccupied the entire time we never went into the stadium to actually watch the football game. None of us even cared because we been many times and we honestly had more fun with each other than sitting at watching other people play. Kenneth Lay wanted to create a company that can supply electricity and natural gas at a much lower price. As time went on, Enron ranked as the nation s sixth largest energy company with global internet trading commodities in plastics, steel, petrochemicals and waste water to name a few (Fusaro, 2000, p. 157). From the time they merged to form Enron up to the point of their collapse, Enron s executive committee had squandered many of the company s assets through bad strategies, hiding money, and creating an illusion of a stable financial company. Most of the top executives overstated Enron s earnings by several million dollars (Niskanen, 2005) causing the company s stockholders to lose millions of dollars. Kenneth Lay who joined InterNorth, later renamed Enron, in 1985 became the CEO the following year. In 1990, Kenneth Lay hired Jeff Skilling to work in the operations department. Jeff Skilling would eventually take over Enron in 2001 as there Chief Executive Officer, replacing Kenneth Lay (Zimmerli, Richter, Holzinger, 2007, p. 131). There was no oversight in Enron s top managerial positions. These horrible devices are cell phones. The worst part though is when children lose these devices we expect they perhaps will do something healthy or active, but honestly they merely devote themselves to reuniting with their phones. Teenagers won t sleep until they have it back their hands. I would understand after all, I am one of those teenagers consumed by my phone. Once, I misplaced it, and spent the next two hours of my life focused solely on locating my phone, that is how precious it is to me. It started one afternoon when I was riding my bike with my friends and I had just popped a fresh piece of gum in my mouth. As the fresh mint swirled around in my mouth, I recalled that my mom needed me home by 4:30 pm, so I reached in my pocket to check the time on my phone. I feel around, but nothing is there except for some ancient pocket lint. I slammed on my breaks and immediately assumed the worse. I lost it in a gutter somewhere, so I retraced my steps to the nearest opening in the gutter. As I bent down to peer into the storm sewer it smelled like someone had thrown up on a dead squirrel. • 22. Synthesis Of Grignard Reagent And Benzaldehyde Introduction: This experiment involved the synthesis of diphenylmethanal from phenylmagnesium bromide which is a Grignard reagent, and benzaldehyde which is a carbonyl group. The goal of this experiment was to investigate the ability of the Grignard reaction to yield the theoretical predicted product and evaluate its efficiency. The Grignard reaction is an important reaction because of its ability to allow the formation of carbon carbon bonds. These formations of C C sigma bonds, then allow for the formation or making of large or complex synthetic molecules from very simple reagents. These complex molecules are then used in many different areas such as the pharmaceutical industry. Also, one must note that Grignard reagents are strong nucleophiles that can attack carbonyl groups that can form substituted alcohols after the protonation step. The reaction occurred as follows. The first step consisted in the formation of the Grignard reagent. That was done through the use of an organic halide provided in the lab and Magnesium. The organic halide used was bromobenzene. The second step consisted of reacting the Grignard reagent formed in the first step with benzaldehyde. The third and final step consisted of using the product of the second step and diluting it with HCl (Hydrochloric Acid). Finally, the product obtained of this whole reaction was diphenylmethonal ( please refer to the drawing below for a more visual approach). The creation of this product can also be ... Race Theories And Its Consequences Race has evolved through the scientific endeavor to forward knowledge, from a categorisation of people based on geographic origin and physical traits, to a hierarchical concept that is used as a tool to racially vilify, discriminate and marginalize particular races. The term race was introduced in the 16th century and referred to a group category of people (Smedley, 1999). From then, the concept of race was scrutinized and redefined by the western world. These issues include authenticity, homogenous stereotyping, racial hierarchy and discrimination. Carolus Linnaeus (1707 78), a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist, is known for his taxonomic system, which laid the foundations of the modern biological categorization (Brace, 2005). His ambition was to make order the chaos of biological life based on distinctiveness and established categories of generic and specific names. It divided humans into six categories; four based on geographic location, and Homo ferus (wild man) and homo monstrosus (monster man) (Fish, 2011). He further tried to make scientific sense of life by assigning traits to each of these categories. Racial stereotyping has derived from this concept of Linnaeus taxonomy, with static conceptions of a particular race that does not allow for individual variation and intergradations (Fish, 2011). As a result of the increased productivity and profits made from slavery, the average British consumer had more money to spend on goods that cost less. These forces helped to revive a slowing British economy and increased capital flows throughout the British Empire. Cheap labor resulted in cheaper goods, and the British consumer was rewarded. As British industries gained more profits from slave institutions, they also expanded their markets. Almost every major British industry benefitted from the increased productivity created by slavery. Gun manufacturing was one of the first major industries to receive direct benefits from the slave trade. Guns and slaves increased in direct proportion to each other. Guns, which were a relatively advanced technology in the late 1700s, were given to African slave traders for African slaves, since African slave owners desired guns and gunpowder to protect their kingdoms from other rival tribes. Guns were highly sought after by African slave traders and could be traded for more slaves than any other good. Whatley of Stanford suggests that it would only cost around 3.5 to 4.5 pounds sterling worth of gunpowder to purchase a slave, but would cost nearly 40 pounds sterling to buy a slave using any other good. Children learn the basic moral values and the socially acceptable codes of conduct necessary for later life, but they can also absorb unacceptable behaviors by observing those around them. In Barn Burning, William Faulkner chronicles the life of Abner Snopes, and the less than perfect relationship he has with his relatives and son, Sartoris. Snopes is a very bitter and discontented man, one who is envious of his rich land owning neighbors. As a rather violent man, he has an insatiable desire to control people, and instill fear in their hearts. Despite his shortcomings, the theme of family loyalty is brought into perspective by Snopes. He values his familial bonds above all else, even the law. Snopes believes that every family should stand up for each other, no matter the situation or differences they may have. In court, Chapman used the novel as his statement and even signed his copy of the novel as Holden Caulfield, the novel s protagonist, believing himself to actually be Caulfield. Among other things, the two both suffered from very significant losses in their families, Lennon having his mother die and Caulfield, his younger brother. The Japanese continued to play an important role in Hawaii s economy, and by 1923 they were the single largest ethnic group there (Daniels 245). In the months before the Pearl Harbor attack, the presence of so many Japanese Americans made it easy for Japanese spies to move freely about the island. • 33. In The Loop And Mid-Term Break By Seamus Heaney In the Loop by Bob Hicok and Mid Term Break by Seamus Heaney are comparable in terms of their symbolic titles, speaker s perspective, and tragic themes. These two poems diverge only in their physical structure, as neither has rhyme nor meter. Both Hicok s and Heaney s poems have seemingly misleading titles that hold significant symbolic meaning upon closer inspection. Taking Hicok s In the Loop into consideration: the phrase in the loop pertains to the idea of being kept up to date on various information while within a social circle. Hicok completely reworks this phrase in his poem by altering the idea of what it means to be informed, as well as adding a foreboding undertone to the familiar phrase. After the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, citizens of the United States were in the loop once news of the massacre flooded various forms of the media; this informed people directly connected to the incident, including students and faculty, as well as other civilians. Hicok also uses the expression in the loop to describe the vicious cycle of grieving that occurs to those connected to a tragedy. He recounts the feelings of emptiness that are experienced by those who grieve a recent misfortune: I answered these messages: there s nothing to say back except of course there s nothing to say, thank you for your willingness to say it. Because this was about nothing. A boy who felt that he was nothing, who erased and entered that erasure (8 13) In these six lines, Hicok describes how he responded to those that reached out to him after the massacre at Virginia Tech; he appreciated the shared understanding that sometimes nothing can besaid in the face of such catastrophe. He then articulates the void felt by those that had any connection to the tragedy. Finally, Hicok conveys that the perpetrator of this heinous act, Seung Hui Cho, ended the lives of 32 students and faculty members because he was a boy who felt that he was nothing (12). Sexual Harassment At The Military Shirley Boone Boone1 Deborah Sullivan Ford 212 Women in Business organizations Sexual Harassment of Women in the Military; It is a Dirty Secret I would like to bring awareness, give insight about the actual victims, and possibly educate you about sexual harassment of women in the military. Sexual harassment can be connected to sexual assault, beginning in one form and escalating to another level. The definition of sexual harassment is: unwelcome sexual harassment behavior of a sexual nature that is related to one s job or work surroundings. Harassers can be male or female. In the military, the soldier can be a supervisor, coworkers, or a third party. But, why have we not heard anything about this issue? As a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This number was statistically higher in 2012 than in 2010, this number was at 4.4 percent. The 6.1 percent of women who were subjected to the unwanted sexual contact indicated the maximum behavior they encountered was unwanted sexual touching, this was at 32 percent, and attempted sex was at 26 percent, but 31 percent said that they experienced completed sex. So the question is where would these crimes take place? The majority of the unwanted sexual contact happened at the military installations, and during work day or duty hours. 94 percent of the offender(s) were men and 1 percent indicated the offender(s) were female only, and 5 percent indicated the offenders were both males and female The WGRA report shows that some of the offenders drugged their victims or the victim admitted to drinking alcohol and the others reported that some form of physical force was used (U.S. Military Gender Relations Survey). The proper procedure for reporting and or filing a claim for a female solider in the Army would be to report this issue to their supervisor, the Chain of Command, the Equal Opportunity Advisor and SHARP (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention). This is after the victim has tried to resolve the issue by letting the perpetrator or perpetrators know that this type of behavior is not warranted, not appreciated or welcomed. If the unwanted behavior continues, then is the next step would be to file an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. New York Times V. Sullivan Case Study New York Times v. Sullivan was a landmark case which dictated the outcomes of many subsequent cases. However, after the Supreme Court s unanimous ruling in favor of the New York Times in 1964, Justice Brennan s opinion raised just as many if not more questions than it had answered. In fact, many justices struggled with how to make sense of the ruling and how it could be applied in both similar and different contexts. While this case was a crucial turning point in the application of First Amendment protection in libel cases, this ruling was by no means an end all to our understanding of free expression and the protection of it. This was demonstrated in cases concerning private versus public figures, through self censorship and in the operation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. Strengths In Mark Bowden s Black Hawk Down Violence, death, profanity. Usually a book containing these subjects, along with many other disturbing aspects, would not be recommended for teenagers to read. However, looking past all of those details, Black Hawk Down actually has valuable lessons within it. The author, Mark Bowden, writes about the Battle Of Mogadishu that occurred from December 1992 to October 1993, and includes useful information within his novel. He focuses on the truth about war, weaknesses and strengths within it, and also lessons that can be learned from these subjects. The subject of war is often romanticized. Video games, movies, and even some other books as well cut out a lot of truth about war, because people tend to be afraid of telling the truth. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are quite a few positive characteristics within the troops as well that make up for the mistakes they may have made. One main one is that they always have each others backs. The Deltas look after the Rangers, and act as their role models. It was as if the Rangers saw the D Boys as their big brothers, and since their big brothers were around, everything would be okay (Bowden 234). This shows the bond between the troops, and adds emotion to the novel. Another characteristic is that the older soldiers try to be positive throughout the war, even if situations got tough. Smith was now asking the medic to tell his parents and family good bye . . . Hold on tight, Schmid told the dying corporal. We re working on getting you out of here (Bowden 238). There are also some points within the novel that show soldiers making jokes about their situation, instead of letting it bring them down and get the best of them. The final trait is that even throughout all of the horrors the two teams went through during the war, they still did their best and pushed through until it was finally over. There s no doubt that the perception people have of this episode is that it was a total fiasco. Bowden says. But this was a successfully completed mission. And in the eyes of the military men involved, it s a mission they re very proud of (EDIT). So even though these teams saw, heard, and participated in horrifying events, in ... What Are The Major Challenges Facing Homeless Families While many consider homelessness to vary in meaning, I consider homelessness to be when one lives out in the elements of mother nature, no shelter at all. For this reason, no Beth and her children were not homeless, they had protection from the elements. Major challenges that confront professionals working with homeless families are: keeping in contact with the family and getting the best resources for them. • 44. The Collapse Of Enron Corporation Introduction: The abrupt and unanticipated collapse of Enron Corporation was due to one of the largest accounting frauds in U.S. history. This scandal had significant impact on the financial markets by causing enormous financial losses for numerous investors. Before filing for Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy protection in December of 2001, Enron was named the Most Innovative Company in America by Fortune Magazine from 1996 to 2001, and also named first in 1999 on its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America (McLean Elkind, 2006). For many years, this Houston based energy company was widely regarded as a fast growing, well managed, and prosperous organization. However, after years of manipulating accounting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, Enron went from concentrating on the energy market to brokering future energy contracts and exploring other ways to make money. One of the ways Enron tried to make more capital was to act as an intermediary that would pledge for stable prices. In 1990, Jeff Skilling, a Harvard graduate, joined the company and ran an innovative, differentiation strategy called Gas Bank (Thomas, 2002). Basically, the plan entailed Enron purchasing natural gas from suppliers and selling it to customers. This strategy allowed the company to guarantee both the price and needed supply while also charging fees for typical risks associated with the business model. From the success of that energy derivative concept, Enron expanded it to bet against the risk of price fluctuation for other commodities, such as: coal, steel, water, power generation, and, around the dot.com boom, offered fiber optic cable (Healey Palepu, 2003). This decision to expand its trading option is the reason why many credited it as being an innovative organization. Another key factor to its early success was Enron s change in accounting systems. The company had previously been using a straightforward system that would just list actual profits and the expenses for supplying and distributing the gas to consumers. Skilling spearheaded the transition to a new method called mark to market (Fox, 2004). This accounting system allows Enron ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Uranium in Geobacter and Its Effects Essay Just as Geobacter species have been utilized as a means for bioremediation in Rifle Mill, Colorado, so too can they be implemented in the Navajo Nation to metabolize soluble uranium found in underground water sources. Uranium (U) is a radioactive element which in its soluble form (VI) causes a multitude of serious health conditions (Craft et al, 2004). Uranium is present in the environment as a result of leaching from natural deposits and emissions from the nuclear industry (WHO, 2003). Uranium salts present in a water supply can be an extreme detriment to public health as the majority of human consumption of soluble uranium can occur through a contaminated water source (WHO, 2003). In strains which expressed pili the uranium precipitated along the conductive pili, away from the cellular envelope. Geobacter species have been successfully implemented in bioremediation techniques in multiple locations. Rifle Mill in Colorado is a uranium mill site where uranium contamination in subterranean aquifers is prevalent. In situ stimulation in Geobacter species via acetate (1 to 3 mM) which was injected over a period of 3 months yielded promising results. Within 50 days U (VI) levels had declined below the prescribed treatment level of 0.18 micro M in some of the monitoring wells (Lovely et al, 2003). Acetate has been shown to stimulate growth of Geobacter species in situ (Rifle, CO). This was substantiated by the transcriptional activity of putative symporter genes (apII and apIII) at low levels of acetate. The study showed that apIII transcript activity was at its highest level when acetate was at its lowest concentrations. Although these experimental findings are not concrete evidence that acetate supports growth of Geobacter species it definitely suggests it (lovely et al, 2010).
