Thesis: The role of private military contractors (PMCs) has expanded tremendously since the end of
the Cold War when western governments began the process of trimming their bloated military forces.
As privatization commenced, governments began to rely upon a new kind of contractor that sold not
only hardware but also manpower and expertise. Even as conventional military forces declined, the
need for highly capable, professional soldiers remained pressing, especially in conflict prone areas
around the world. PMCs filled these gaps, providing military assistance, advice, and security services
to governments, companies, and NGOs. However, the role of these companies, and the legal
framework surrounding them remains up for debate, and recent cases of misconduct with deadly
consequences only muddy the waters further. The question remains: do PMCs serve to help or hurt
human rights in areas where they are deployed? In this paper, I will argue that PMCs do have a critical
role in the modern battlefield as providers of logistical, training, and security services, but their use in
offensive actions or assistance with so called black operations should be circumscribed to the point of
nonexistence. I will analyze two cases studies where PMCSs were deployed: Iraq and Sierra Leone to

original technical writing guide and why I redesigned it in the way that I did.
Summary
This document as whole, was missing a lot of crucial information that I felt needed to be included in a
technical writing guide. As a whole, I believe that my redesign of the document will prove to be more
useful and more navigable than the original that was presented. In the discussion, I will be analyzing
each part of the guide that I felt needed to be revised.
Discussion
One of the first things that will stick out from the guide is the color scheme chosen for both the text
and background, blue and green text on a beige background respectively. Since this is supposed to be
an academic resource for engineering students, I felt it was most appropriate to have a white
background with black text, thus helping to bolster the professionalism of the document. When I first
opened the document, I felt as if it was very distracting and possibly may have been written for those
in high school, but upon further inspection, I discovered that this was written for students at the
University of Cape Town in South Africa. Unless this is a cultural difference of some kind, I feel as if
the author merely wanted to attract readers to use the guide. Even after fixing the color scheme, it was
still very hard to navigate the document.

sheep his favorite was a calf named Chad. Chad and Morty have been best friends ever since Chad
was born. When Morty was feeding Chad he looked over and saw a cloud of dust that ranged for
miles. He yelled at his brother to look and together they put away all the livestock and went inside for
shelter. Four hours goes by and the storm finally passes. The two boys go outside to see that
everything has been covered in dust. They run to the barn and see that all their livestock had died from
