Historians, social scientists, and literary critics have by and large accepted Smith s notion that there
was an early modern period of mercantilist consensus. Most of those scholars have associated this
view, at least in part, with the notion that everyone who mattered believed that trade was a zero sum
game. They have assumed that because land and the raw materials derived from it were the ultimate
measure of wealth in the early modern period, wealth was necessarily finite. Policy makers operating
under these assumptions, we are frequently told, subordinated the interests of the periphery to the
imperatives of the metropolitan core. However, these assumptions, at least about seventeenth and
eighteenth century England, are untenable. That realization warrants rethinking the origins and
contours of British imperial rule and the structure of the Atlantic world.
Adam Smith s powerful and stadial view of European commercial development stimulated the
thinking of classical economists. John Ramsay
McCulloch, James Mill, David Ricardo, Nassau Senior, and a host of others castigated the evils of the
mercantile system. But it was in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that scholars in

Retail Analysis To begin, I d like to first introduce Golf Galaxy. Golf Galaxy opened its first store in
1997 making it a rather new however rapidly growing company, and now has over 45 stores spanning
19 states with an average size of 17,000 square feet. Golf Galaxy has quickly differentiated itself from
its competitors by becoming the first interactive golf store providing superstore design, selection, and
pricing along with pro shop knowledge and service, which is usually only found at your local country
club. Golf Galaxy s idea for competitive advantage is to take the benefit s of a superstore and combine
them with the benefits you find at a country club. Golf Galaxy stands as one of the few stores in the

Republic Vs Athenian Democracy
Imagine a world where our leaders were picked from random draw. That s exactly what the Athenians
did! The Athenians believed campaigning, which the United States currently uses to help candidates
convince the citizens to vote for them as their representative, could be biased by the rich and famous.
There are a multitude of reasons why the United States republic differs from the Athenian
democracy, despite the differences they are also astoundingly similar. These differences lead to the
distinction between a republic,a form of government in which is held by the representatives of the
people s choosing, and a democracy, which translates to government by the people in greek. Although
different, there are impacts made from the Athenian government

Oh, Play that Thing and The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle
In Roddy Doyle s series Oh, Play That Thing and The Dead Republic the world is shown to the
readers through the eyes of a wise fool, Henry Smart. The series includes a wide variety of magical
realism, and how Henry continues to fight social norms to get what he wants. The idea of society vs.
man and individualism takes a toll on Henry s pride by forcing him to jump from job to job or from
flat to flat that ultimately puts him in disarray. Each book s analysis should be in its own category, but
they have many identical ideas, themes, and characters that bring them together.
The elements of magical realism in a historical series, at first sight seem quite suitable. It is generally
agreed that the picaresque, with its humorous ideas on the social outcasts trying to endure an
aggressive environment, is a sensible move against the romanticize tendency of the plot. Magic
realism, with its limited interruption of mimetic rules, lends itself to a number of uses, postcolonial
being one of them. It introduces elements of grotesque moments that allow the readers to sense the
satirical potentials and it brings in metaphorical aspects to the plate. The aspects of magical realism
seem to play with the readers mind. The convention of picaresque combined with magical realism
builds a wider grotesque vision for the reader. It is not only the space but also the characters, the main
protagonist among them are shaped according to the defamilliarising rules of this magical picaresque
world.

Galactic Empire Research Paper
The Galactic Empire is the largest military force in the galaxy, with their only opposition being the
Rebel Alliance. The AT AT Walker is arguably the most powerful terrestrial vehicle at the disposal of
the Galactic Empire. The Empire employs the AT AT onto the battlefield as both a troop transport and
an assault craft. The AT AT has been deployed in multiple battlefield environments, including the
assault on Hoth and defense of the forest moon of Endor, with deadly effect. The AT AT is used when
the Empire needs to assault an enemy position, or when a large amount of enemies need taken out.
The AT AT is also utilized as a physiological deterrent.
The AT At is a quadrupedal, highly armored vehicle, with the command deck and pilot s seat ... Show

One such weakness is its inability to attack anything behind its main body. The walker would have to
turn completely around to engage a target behind it thus exposing itself to the direction it was
previously facing. One of the most commonly exploited weaknesses of the AT AT is it high center of
gravity, making it top heavy. One example of the rebels taking advantage of this weakness is when the
Empire assaulted Hoth. Rebel snow speeders attached tow lines toe the walker s legs and wrapped the
line around it until the walker got snagged and toppled over. The walker also has a hard time attacking
more than one target at a time. Another weakness is the flexible tunnel that runs between the cargo and
troop areas of the craft and the head. One direct blast to this tunnel detonated the entire AT AT. The
platting on the underbelly of the walker is slightly weaker and easier to damage. The AT AT also has
no way to protect against troops beneath its main body, where the lightly armored hatch can be easily
cut free and sabotaged. One other big weakness in the design of the AT AT is the fact that it is very
slow compared to the smaller AT ST. Also the terrain it is in can limit it much farther, with it moving
at its fastest on flat smooth ground and its slowest on steep rocky inclines, and heavily forested areas
like the moon of Endor where its usage was far less than the

Science Behind Black Holes
all of you probably know what a black hole is, its a black thing in space that is like a vacuum and
sucks up anything in its way, this is pretty much what most people think of when they think of a black
hole. but today I m going to talk about the actual science behind black holes, how are they made,
whats inside of them, and what would happen if you went inside of one?
How are black holes made?
in order to get into how black holes are mad you need to understand how stars work. stars are massive
collections of mainly hydrogen atoms, within a stars core, nuclear fusion causes hydrogen atoms get
crushed into helium atoms which releases a ton of energy, this energy comes in the form of radiation,
this radiation pushes against gravity which makes a nice balance between the two.
Balance is key
For the star to maintain this balance it must maintain fusion within the core, however with much larger
stars, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
so once your inside what happens? there are a lot of theories to what happens,I m going to talk about
to of them, one theory is the following, black holes curve space so much that once you get inside there
is only one way to go, kind of like a very tight alleyway, as you would go down the alley way, the
mass of the black hole would get so concentrated that gravity would become millions time stronger,
ripping your cells apart until you are no more then a stream of atoms. another theory states that when
you enter the black hole you would quickly be introduced into a massive firewall and be burned to
death instantly. as far as how long you would survive either of these options would depend on the size
of the black hole. a smaller black hole would kill you almost instantly while a massive black hole you
could probably survive in for a while. how long? nobody

Ethical Decision Making Analysis
In society, individuals experience situations in which they tend to question whether their choices are
ethical. In the article, The Importance of Values and Cultures in Ethical Decision Making by Christine
Chimielewski, Chimielewski discusses the three principles which can help a person determine whether
they are the good or bad choice. The three principles for making an ethical decision are The Rule of
Private Gain , Everyone Does It , and Benefits Versus Burden . If a person is stuck in a situation where
they re indecisive about the choice, then the individual should look at the three principles. This article
relates to the story, Everyone Lives in a Flood Zone, because of the main character, Jack finds himself

brother house. After this incident, Jack knew something was up, and as soon he spotted his brother he
tried to avoid him. He wanted to avoid him because he did want his brother to die and caught. Stephen
then calls out Jack s name which leads to the bowler hatted man and his crew approaches Stephen on
the rooftop. Jake did not know that they had set him up from the beginning, but the bowler hatted man
wanted Stephen to pay up his debts. Fear rushes through Jake s body and his first instinct is to
sacrifice everything he so his brother would not die. Jake immediately replies to the bowler hatted
man saying, I ll pay you triple, dog, I screamed. You re throwing away a fortune. Jake is willing to
give up everything for his brother. Ethical thinking involves the intricate process used to consider the
impact of our actions on the individuals or institution we serve. While most decisions are routine, we
can unexpectedly face an ethical dilemma when unusual situations occur suddenly for which an
immediate response is needed. This quote is related to Jack s experience when debating whether he
should save his brother or just let them kill his brother. When put into an ethical dilemma, a person
should try to evaluate their options whether choosing right from wrong. Jack made an ethical decision

The Bureaucratic System Of Public Administration
Introduction How Kristin Died is a prime example of one of the many issues inherent within the
bureaucratic system and the misfortunes that can stem from it. This case forever changed the lives of
those involved and unfortunately resulted in the death of Kristin Lardner, a 21 year old college
student, at the hands of Michael Cartier, her estranged boyfriend. It is important to public
administration because public administration contains many issues of hierarchy and redundancy.
Public administration also has the power to mold the environments where it is present in many ways.
This case is strongly related to organizational theory, the relationship organizations have with the
environment and how individuals behave within. When presented, the information within the case
surrounding the details of Kristin s death proves that had the bureaucracies involved taken the
necessary preventative measures, this tragedy may not have occurred. The main individuals of this
case include: Kristin Lardner, Michael Cartier, Tom Case and Rose Ryan. Although others were
involved, these individuals had the most influence within the case. Although Lardner was originally
from Washington, DC, this event takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attends college in
the early 1990 s. History Cartier showed signs of trouble very early on. As a child it is stated that he
would light matches behind a gas stove, and even mutilated his pet rabbit. Due to these acts, Cartier s

Cultural Variants in Health and Happiness Essay example
As people, we tend to be products of our culture. This is very much the case for me. I have been
shaped and molded by the outside influences that surround me. I have recently noticed that my
American cultural views are very different from other cultures and that perhaps my view may not be
the best. In fact, there may not be a best culture or view in life.
This semester we have heard multiple lectures which centered on the Chinese or Daoist cultures,
which have multiple similarities and are in many facets built on each other. In the lecture about
Daoism, Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, spoke of transcendent bodies and concentrated mainly on qi
(Littlejohn). While Dr. Yuan ling Chao s lecture about Chinese medicine was about maintaining ...

American culture, despite the beauty of such diversity, has some draw backs. As nation, we are
amongst the least healthy in the world with an alarmingly high percentage of obesity. This could very
well be a byproduct of our culture. As for other aspects of our culture, American s tend to be very
motivated in life with goals that are often success and wealth oriented. These goals are focused on the
individual person; however, Chinese people tend to be focused on the community and family. They
look to each other for support throughout their lives and this is where the achievements that Chinese
people strive for is oriented around (Lu and Gilmour).
Despite the differences, each culture has its own way for people to strive to find happiness. Each way
must also have some basis because neither country is void of happy and healthy people. This brings
the question to mind, how can people find happiness in both ways? While I may not be able to give a
perfect answer that can be backed by facts and endless amounts of evidence, I can give my opinion on
how this is possible.
I believe that happiness is not the same for everyone. We all have different experiences and these
experiences shape us into the person we are. These experiences could be absolutely horrible and
prevent a person from every being happy again. They could also cause a person to grow and know his

The Change Into Pop Culture Through Media And Other Forms
Raunchy Liberation Raunchiness has worked its way into pop culture through media and other forms.
Which brings up the question: can raunchiness be empowering? Levy looks at how a portion of
women are raunchy, and she found that its use can be almost derading to some women. This viewpoint
is made obvious when she finishes her article with [i]t is worth asking ourselves if this bawdy world
of boobs and gams we have resurrected reflects how far we ve come, or how far we have left to go
(131). Yet, there are levels of raunchiness that I believe are liberating for many groups of people, not
only women. The feminist movement showed the world that women have had enough of being
sheltered. Of course, many rights were then given to them, then it translated to African American
equality and most recently gay rights. Many historic events happened in the 60s that led for a more
accepting and open minded world than it was previously. So in this new found freedom, where is the
line for raunchy and liberated? [O]nly thirty years ago,... our mothers were burning their bras and
picketing Playboy, and suddenly we were getting implants and wearing the bunny logo as supposed
symbols of our liberation, here, Levy shows a little disgust in how some woman behave (129). What
she fails to see, is that if a woman got implants and wore short shorts thirty years ago, a pastor would
be giving them a private sermon the second they got home from being in public. The pastor s kid, for

Vladimir Lenin and his Rise to Power
Eventually, empires and nations all collapse. The end can be brought about by many causes. Whether
through becoming too large for their own good, being ruled by a series of out of touch men, falling
behind technologically, having too many enemies, succumbing to civil war, or a combination: no
country is safe. The Russia of 1910 was in atremendously horrible situation. She had all of these
problems. Russia would not have existed by 1920 were it not for Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the only man

He formed his own political party, the Bolsheviks, a split off of the earlier Marxists. Unlike other
parties of his time, Lenin limited membership to a small number of full time revolutionaries (Haney

he traveled all over Europe writing propaganda, organizing strikes, and encouraging revolution among
the working class, especially in Russia (Lenin, V.I. 191). Lenin knew what he wanted, knew how to
get it, and was willing to wait.
During World War I, the time was right and Lenin was the man. Czar Nicholas II remained totally
focused on winning the war, and did not hesitate before committing more men and supplies to the war
effort(Haney 65). But for an already starving country, every train that brought supplies to the front
could not also be bringing food to peasants. With public sentiment and even the Czar s own army
against him, Nicholas abdicated the throne in March of 1917 (69). A government by soviets (councils)
was instated, but did not last long. After that, Alexander Kerensky seized power. In November, Lenin
and his Bolsheviks, with help from armed citizens, stopped the revolving door. They took over St.
Petersburg (then Petrograd) and later captured Moscow, meeting little resistance along the way
(Jantzen 613). Lenin took over the government and signed a treaty with Germany to take Russia out of

Foundations of Personality
Nature Versus Nurture The argument of whether an individual s personality is defined by nature or
nurture is one of the oldest debates in psychology. On one hand, are biological theorists who use
research to support the importance of genetics on behavior (Zaky, 2015). On the other hand, are
theorists who support the theory of tabula rasa, which is the stance that we are born with blank slates
and acquire our personality from experiences (Zaky, 2015). An example of a biological theorist is,
Bowlby who viewed infant attachment as being an innate process for survival (Zaky, 2015). By

is a study conducted by Dr. Fatima Kamran (2016) regarding perceived personality differences

both lines of thought would suggest that siblings that share genetics and home environments would be

My Music Concert
Today, I went to the symphony for the first time. Not much of a thrilling opener, huh? What if I
elaborated to say the closest I have ever gotten to a symphony was a grade four band concert, in which
my little brother played the saxophone (he quit the following year.) Maybe I could compare this
experience to all the DIY rock shows I attended back home in basements/back rooms where the
sounds could be loud enough to deafen people standing outside and the heat could bring almost
anyone to immediate sickness, but that seems a little crude. The bottom line is, I have never been
fortunate enough to encounter the amount or complexity of instruments as I did at Willson
Auditorium. Before continuing, I would like to express sincere gratitude toward requiring, and thus
allowing, me to attend this fantastic concert. I believe that I not only enjoyed a wonderful performance
but also appreciated music with knowledge and context. It is because of said knowledge and context
that the music sounded lifelike, and the connections between instruments and literary ideas were
formed for the first time. Upon arrival to the seats I was surprised by the vastness of the venue, and
the proximity of my seat to the stage (the row directly ahead of me was front row.) When the
musicians took stage, I was slightly disappointed at my inability to see everyone, however, my view of
the double basses was intriguing as I had not realized how large they actually are (I had never seen
one in real life prior.)

NFL Concussions Research
The National Football League has announced its plans to invest further in its concussion testing. On
Wednesday, the NFL s Commissioner Roger Goodell published an open letter on the Play Smart. Play
Safe. website. He details various ways the NFL will move forward in regards with head injuries, care,
and prevention. He also stated that the league will pledge $100 million towards reaching those goals.
In the letter Goodell says, ...when it comes to addressing head injuries in our game, I m not satisfied,
and neither are the owners of the NFL s 32 clubs. We can and will do better.
While Goodell admits that the league has to improve its dealings with concussions, it has many critics

The NFL has since then denied those claims.
Though, as the league seems to move forward with concussion polices, there are still hiccups. In
particular, one game in the league s season opener exemplifies it. Carolina Panthers superstar
quarterback and reigning Most Valuable Player Cam Newton was illegally hit with multiple helmet to
helmet collisions. There was no penalties given as he continued the game. After public scrutiny, the
league and its player union announced they will each examine the concussion protocol.
It is good to see the NFL take steps to better protect its players, but critics say it is long overdue. And
while they are fair in that assessment, even they have to agree that the league s stances on concussions
and policies has significantly changed in the last decade.
There are more calls for football to be banned, with many citing numerous safety issues. It is yet to be
seen how the league will operate in the future. Hopefully, the NFL can do even more to protect its
players in future. This investment is a step in the right direction, both for the league s image and more

The short story The ones who walk away from Omelas , written by Ursula K. Le Guin is about an

Satire in Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Essay
Catch 22, by Joseph Heller, is a fictitious novel that depicts life on an American bomber squadron on
Pianosa, an island off the coast of Italy, during the closing years of World War II. A bombardier by the
name of Yossarian, the main character in the story, is joined by many others to create a comic drama
unlike any other. But aside from the entertainment, Heller uses Catch 22 to satirize many aspects of
everyday life that consist of hypocrisy, corruption, and insanity. From the laziness of policeman to the
fake happiness brought about by money, the novel is painted with a great number of points targeted
against the faults of modern society. However, along with these smaller targets, a majority of the
Heller s satire in the novel is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Yossarian rebels against this system of injustice commanding over him, the narrator states that
Milo is ashamed of Yossarian who is quot;jeopardizing his traditional rights of freedom and
independence by daring to exercise them quot; (415). According to Milo, it is not fair to fight for your
own justice as an American in the military. This statement is foolish and is exactly what Heller
satirizes in the book; the fact that during war, the freedom and individuality of lower ranking officers
are stripped away from them to satisfy the needs of higher ranking officers. Yossarian later discovers
through Major Danby that Colonel Cathcart and Colonel Korn quot;can prepare as many official
reports as they want and choose whichever ones they need on any given occasion, quot; which is
another example of the bureaucracy allowing men to cease liberties in order to incite more power for
personal use (452). When continuing his discussion with Major Danby at the end of the book,
Yossarian uses an analogy to indicate to the Major just what it is like being controlled by higher
powers. After Danby wishes he was a cucumber or some kind of vegetable so he did not have to make
important decisions, Yossarian states that if he was a quot;good one quot; then quot;they d cut you off
in your prime and slice you up for a salad quot; and if he was a quot;poor

Essay about Descartes’ Cogito
Descartes Cogito It is the purpose of this essay to examine both Descartes Cogito argument and his
skepticism towards small and universal elements, as well as the implications these arguments have on
each other. First, I will summarize and explain the skepticism Descartes brings to bear on small and
universal elements in his first meditation. Second, I will summarize and explain the Cogito argument,
Descartes famous I think, therefore I am (it should be noted that this famous implication is not
actually something ever said or written by Descartes, but instead, an implication taken from his
argument for his own existence). Third, I will critique the line of reasoning underlying these
arguments. Descartes attacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes attacks the possibility of certainty with regards to the existence of small and universal
elements with the possibility of our thoughts being altered by an omnipotent deceiver. In paragraph
nine, he states, How do I know that he did not bring it about that there be no Earth at all, no heavens,
no extended thing, no figure, no size, no place, and yet all these things should seem to me to exist
precisely as they appear to do now. His point is that this omnipotent evil deceiver could create in our
minds an understanding of mathematics and logic that is at odds with reality, causing us to construe
everything wrongly. Thus Descartes ends this final and devastating doubt with the preliminary
conclusion that everything he perceives can be called into doubt. Descartes answers his seemingly
hopeless skepticism from the first meditation with the Cogito. The basic point of his Cogito argument
is that for me to either perceive awry, or even to doubt my own existence, I must exist. It is, as
Descartes says, I am, I exist is necessarily true every time it is uttered by me or conceived in my mind
(Med2, par3). He makes two arguments for the Cogito in his second meditation. Descartes arrives at
the Cogito through the notion of an omnipotent deceiver actually. He starts to question his own

Captain Americ Captain s Superhero
Captain America is a Marvel comic book character, created in 1940. His real name is Steve Rodgers.
The Captain became a beloved superhero around the time of World War II. After being rejected by the
Army, Rodgers found himself as the test subject of a super soldier project. This experiment was
successful and it gave him abnormal strength, endurance, intelligence and speed. As this perfect
human and soldier, Captain America worked closely with soldiers to fight against the Nazis. During a
mission. Rodgers was forced to crash his plane into a glacier. This glacier kept him frozen for almost
seventy years. He was eventually thawed out in modern times. Today, Captain America is a loved, and
timeless superhero.
The Captain has a multitude of strengths. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Captain America believes in justice, and that it must be served to those who have done wrong. For
instance, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier Nick Fury was chased after agents claiming to work
for local law enforcement and S.H.I.E.L.D. To hide from these men, fury went to Rodger`s home,
informing him how S.H.I.E.L.D was compromised. Soon after, he was shot by the Winter Soldier.
Fury later died while surgeon`s were trying to save him. The Captain made it is mission to figure out
who compromised S.H.I.E.L.D and to serve them justice for their role in Fury`s death. In the United
States we also have a strong sense of justice. We have an entire system that is devoted to serve justice
to those have committed crimes. Another value that is important to Steve Rodgers is courage. As a
superhero, one cannot be easily frightened. Therefore, Captain America is not afraid to risk his life to
save others. Throughout the move he is not apprehensive about jumping out of planes, or fighting ten
enemies in an elevator. In the movie, his tremendous example of courage is towards the end. The
Captain was in charge of overriding the software for the three ships. This would result in the three
ships blowing up. Captain America was willing to let himself die on the ship in order to successfully
override the systems. This action ended up saving thousands of people. Fortunately, the Captain

Comparison Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Prompt 1: An Exploration of Self Self is a definition of who we are, and that definition can come from
two sources: ourselves and those we are close to. The resulting person is usually some combination of
the two perceptions of self. In the works The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert
Louis Stevenson and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, this idea of self is explored.
We see how a pair of characters meddle with their own definition of themselves and the eventual
ramifications of the changes made. Interestingly, although the results are very different, the two pairs
follow the same rules when it comes to the definition of self: the truth will always show itself, no
matter how hard one tries to suppress it. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jekyll is a weak, decent man by nature. Hyde is a strong, evil man by nature. Thus Hyde overpowers
and destroys Jekyll, and then himself, having nothing more to consume than the soul of his alter ego.
They were true to their natures, and the rest is just simple math. The calculations for Jack and
Algernon are a little more complicated, but follow the same basic equation. Take what is true about
them from their various influences and add it all up. In Jack s case, his name turns out to actually be
Ernest, he comes from the same family as Algernon (he s even Gwendolyn s cousin but we don t like
to dwell on that), and he loves Gwendolen. These things are true about him. The double life and
falsehood fades away in the face of his true self. Algernon has a bit less luck when it comes to what is
true in his nature, but he gets the girl, so it s still a happy ending. Algernon s name doesn t end up
being Ernest, and he gets caught in his fake persona, but Cecily loves him regardless. And then, of
course, it is revealed that Jack is actually Algernon s elder brother, so his city character is actually real,
without him even knowing

The Music Of Reggae Music
Reggae music is the result of a number of different styles and genre of music being mixed together
and interrupted by Jamaicans. Reggae was really created in the late 1960s as a result of music genres
such as ska, rock steady, mento, American jazz, rhythm and blues, new Orleans R and B and calypso.
Ska and rock steady are very much the foundations for not only Reggae but a number of these other
genres too. Ska music originated in the late 1950s and was the precursor for rock steady music. Ska
music was characterized by the walking bass line , meaning it has a continuous sequence of notes that
are played. Rock steady is a genre created around 1966 in Jamaica and it was performed majorly by
Jamaican harmony groups. Rock steady has a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nash released Hold Me Tight which is largely responsible for breaking the American market. Around
the same time Reggae was beginning to influence some pop and rock bands changing or effecting their
style of music such as a song by the Beatles called Ob La Di, Ob La Da. These are just a few of the

Describe The Chemical Process In Making Americium
Chemical process in making americium:
The most popular type of smoke alarm is an ionization chamber smoke alarm. These contain 0.28
micrograms of the radioactive isotope americium 241, in the form of americium dioxide. Americium
is a synthetic element, so it must be produced in a nuclear reactor. Americium is made from plutonium
241, yet this needs to also be made in a nuclear reactor. Uranium 238 in a nuclear reactor it is hit with
a neutron, which makes uranium 239. Uranium 239 has a half life of 23.5 minutes, the uranium goes
through beta decay becomes neptunium 239. This neptunium will then form plutonium 239 via beta
decay over two days, this is then bombarded with two neutrons to become plutonium 241. Plutonium

It has become a social (as well as a government) expectation to have them installed in your home.
Smoke alarms save lives; without a smoke alarm you are 4 times more likely to die in the event of a
fire. The americium inside the alarm is an alpha and low energy gamma emitter. Alpha radiation can
be stopped by a piece of paper or a few centimetres of air, meaning you could stand under a raw
sample of americium and not be in any danger. Yet, gamma radiation has the wavelength near that of
an atomic nuclei (10 Pico meters) meaning that they penetrated far more easily. These rays are weak
enough not to do any harm, yet are the major factor to the radiation from a smoke alarm. It has
become a misconception that smoke alarms are a threat to health because of their radioactivity. The
radiation emitted from a smoke alarm annually is 9 50 nano sieverts, eating banana releases the
equivalent of 100 nano sieverts, the average background radiation in Australia is 2000000 nano
sieverts, to put how little radiation is absorbed from a smoke alarm. The real problem is only when
americium is internalised into the body, because it is an alpha emitter. It poses a threat to health
because even though the alpha particles themselves are harmless, the speeds they travel give them the
ability to break bonds and ionize atoms, thus causing cancer. When in the body 90% stays in you and
the rest is excreted, it goes to the liver, bones and ovaries or testicles where it has the possibility to
cause cancer or birth

The Impact Of Profitability And Efficiency On Each Other
Formerly discovered, efficiency and profitability are positively correlated. Hence, when the
profitability of banks ameliorates their efficiency improve along. In contrast to Shaffnit et al. (1997),
the impact of profitability and efficiency on each other is trivial (Akmal and Saleem, 2008). Initially,
once we come across the study of banking efficiency, what usually pops into the heads is; why the
efficiency of banks matters to managers, regulators, shareholders, and consumers. The reply to the
above query is diverse for each of them as it relies on their standpoints (Kumar and Gulati, 2008).
Source: Kumar and Gulati, 2008
Figure 12: Importance of Efficient Banks from Different Viewpoints
By definition, a bank is said to be efficient if it is capable of generating more outputs like loans and
investments using lesser inputs like capital and labor expenses (Staub et al. 2010). Yue (1992) stated
that a firm is categorized as efficient in either of the two cases: if it generates equal output level using
lesser inputs or if it generates more outputs using equal or lesser inputs. And by maintaining the
control over the delivery expenses banks become further efficient (PWC, 2012). In contrast to
inefficient banks, efficient ones are more capable of contesting owing to their inferior operational
expenses (Kumar and Gulati, 2008). In general, banks that perform better than others display higher
degrees of capitalization (Tecles and Tabak, 2010). But when

Bedbug Experiment
Bedbug Treatment Cost
What are Bedbugs?
There are different insects that can invade your home, but the bedbug can easily pass as the most
frustrating. This insect lives off the blood of people and animals, typically feeding while its host
sleeps. Adult bedbugs have a light brown or reddish brown color, and their tiny size makes them very
difficult to discover. A peculiar thing about this insect is the fact that just one bug may invade a home
and within a short period of time begin to reproduce, after which the invasion will expand fast. They
can survive if they don t feed for several months and this can make bedbugs difficult to wipe out once
they invade your home.
The life cycle of bedbugs starts with tiny eggs which later hatch to produce small nymphs, ... Show

Historians, social scientists, and literary critics have by and large accepted Smith s notion that there was an early modern period of mercantilist consensus. Most of those scholars have associated this view, at least in part, with the notion that everyone who mattered believed that trade was a zero sum game. They have assumed that because land and the raw materials derived from it were the ultimate measure of wealth in the early modern period, wealth was necessarily finite. Policy makers operating under these assumptions, we are frequently told, subordinated the interests of the periphery to the imperatives of the metropolitan core. However, these assumptions, at least about seventeenth and eighteenth century England, are untenable. That realization warrants rethinking the origins and contours of British imperial rule and the structure of the Atlantic world. Adam Smith s powerful and stadial view of European commercial development stimulated the thinking of classical economists. John Ramsay McCulloch, James Mill, David Ricardo, Nassau Senior, and a host of others castigated the evils of the mercantile system. Oh, Play thatThing and The Dead Republic by Roddy Doyle In Roddy Doyle s series Oh, Play That Thing and The Dead Republic the world is shown to the readers through the eyes of a wise fool, Henry Smart. The series includes a wide variety of magical realism, and how Henry continues to fight social norms to get what he wants. The idea of society vs. man and individualism takes a toll on Henry s pride by forcing him to jump from job to job or from flat to flat that ultimately puts him in disarray. Each book s analysis should be in its own category, but they have many identical ideas, themes, and characters that bring them together. The elements of magical realism in a historical series, at first sight seem quite suitable. It is generally agreed that the picaresque, with its humorous ideas on the social outcasts trying to endure an aggressive environment, is a sensible move against the romanticize tendency of the plot. Magic realism, with its limited interruption of mimetic rules, lends itself to a number of uses, postcolonial being one of them. It introduces elements of grotesque moments that allow the readers to sense the satirical potentials and it brings in metaphorical aspects to the plate. The aspects of magical realism seem to play with the readers mind. The convention of picaresque combined with magical realism builds a wider grotesque vision for the reader. It is not only the space but also the characters, the main protagonist among them are shaped according to the defamilliarising rules of this magical picaresque world. ... The AT AT has been deployed in multiple battlefield environments, including the assault on Hoth and defense of the forest moon of Endor, with deadly effect. The AT AT is used when the Empire needs to assault an enemy position, or when a large amount of enemies need taken out. The AT AT is also utilized as a physiological deterrent. One such weakness is its inability to attack anything behind its main body. The walker would have to turn completely around to engage a target behind it thus exposing itself to the direction it was previously facing. One of the most commonly exploited weaknesses of the AT AT is it high center of gravity, making it top heavy. One example of the rebels taking advantage of this weakness is when the Empire assaulted Hoth. Rebel snow speeders attached tow lines toe the walker s legs and wrapped the line around it until the walker got snagged and toppled over. The walker also has a hard time attacking more than one target at a time. Another weakness is the flexible tunnel that runs between the cargo and troop areas of the craft and the head. One direct blast to this tunnel detonated the entire AT AT. The platting on the underbelly of the walker is slightly weaker and easier to damage. The AT AT also has no way to protect against troops beneath its main body, where the lightly armored hatch can be easily cut free and sabotaged. One other big weakness in the design of the AT AT is the fact that it is very slow compared to the smaller AT ST. Also the terrain it is in can limit it much farther, with it moving at its fastest on flat smooth ground and its slowest on steep rocky inclines, and heavily forested areas like the moon of Endor where its usage was far less than the ... Science Behind BlackHoles all of you probably know what a black hole is, its a black thing in space that is like a vacuum and sucks up anything in its way, this is pretty much what most people think of when they think of a black hole. but today I m going to talk about the actual science behind black holes, how are they made, whats inside of them, and what would happen if you went inside of one? How are black holes made? in order to get into how black holes are mad you need to understand how stars work. stars are massive collections of mainly hydrogen atoms, within a stars core, nuclear fusion causes hydrogen atoms get crushed into helium atoms which releases a ton of energy, this energy comes in the form of radiation, this radiation pushes against gravity which makes a nice balance between the two. Balance is key For the star to maintain this balance it must maintain fusion within the core, however with much larger stars, the ... The three principles for making an ethical decision are The Rule of Private Gain , Everyone Does It , and Benefits Versus Burden . The Bureaucratic SystemOf Public Administration Introduction How Kristin Died is a prime example of one of the many issues inherent within the bureaucratic system and the misfortunes that can stem from it. This case forever changed the lives of those involved and unfortunately resulted in the death of Kristin Lardner, a 21 year old college student, at the hands of Michael Cartier, her estranged boyfriend. It is important to public administration because public administration contains many issues of hierarchy and redundancy. Public administration also has the power to mold the environments where it is present in many ways. This case is strongly related to organizational theory, the relationship organizations have with the environment and how individuals behave within. When presented, the information within the case surrounding the details of Kristin s death proves that had the bureaucracies involved taken the necessary preventative measures, this tragedy may not have occurred. The main individuals of this case include: Kristin Lardner, Michael Cartier, Tom Case and Rose Ryan. Although others were involved, these individuals had the most influence within the case. Although Lardner was originally from Washington, DC, this event takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attends college in the early 1990 s. Cultural Variants inHealth and Happiness Essay example As people, we tend to be products of our culture. This is very much the case for me. I have been shaped and molded by the outside influences that surround me. I have recently noticed that my American cultural views are very different from other cultures and that perhaps my view may not be the best. In fact, there may not be a best culture or view in life. This semester we have heard multiple lectures which centered on the Chinese or Daoist cultures, which have multiple similarities and are in many facets built on each other. In the lecture about Daoism, Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, spoke of transcendent bodies and concentrated mainly on qi (Littlejohn). American culture, despite the beauty of such diversity, has some draw backs. As nation, we are amongst the least healthy in the world with an alarmingly high percentage of obesity. This could very well be a byproduct of our culture. As for other aspects of our culture, American s tend to be very motivated in life with goals that are often success and wealth oriented. These goals are focused on the individual person; however, Chinese people tend to be focused on the community and family. They look to each other for support throughout their lives and this is where the achievements that Chinese people strive for is oriented around (Lu and Gilmour). Despite the differences, each culture has its own way for people to strive to find happiness. Each way must also have some basis because neither country is void of happy and healthy people. This brings the question to mind, how can people find happiness in both ways? While I may not be able to give a perfect answer that can be backed by facts and endless amounts of evidence, I can give my opinion on how this is possible. I believe that happiness is not the same for everyone. We all have different experiences and these experiences shape us into the person we are. These experiences could be absolutely horrible and prevent a person from every being happy again. They could also cause a person to grow and know his or herself better. The Change IntoPop Culture Through Media And Other Forms Raunchy Liberation Raunchiness has worked its way into pop culture through media and other forms. Which brings up the question: can raunchiness be empowering? Levy looks at how a portion of women are raunchy, and she found that its use can be almost derading to some women. This viewpoint is made obvious when she finishes her article with [i]t is worth asking ourselves if this bawdy world of boobs and gams we have resurrected reflects how far we ve come, or how far we have left to go (131). Yet, there are levels of raunchiness that I believe are liberating for many groups of people, not only women. The feminist movement showed the world that women have had enough of being sheltered. Of course, many rights were then given to them, then it translated to African American equality and most recently gay rights. Many historic events happened in the 60s that led for a more accepting and open minded world than it was previously. So in this new found freedom, where is the line for raunchy and liberated? [O]nly thirty years ago,... our mothers were burning their bras and picketing Playboy, and suddenly we were getting implants and wearing the bunny logo as supposed symbols of our liberation, here, Levy shows a little disgust in how some woman behave (129). From 1897 to 1917, he traveled all over Europe writing propaganda, organizing strikes, and encouraging revolution among the working class, especially in Russia (Lenin, V.I. 191). Lenin knew what he wanted, knew how to get it, and was willing to wait. During World War I, the time was right and Lenin was the man. Czar Nicholas II remained totally focused on winning the war, and did not hesitate before committing more men and supplies to the war effort(Haney 65). With public sentiment and even the Czar s own army against him, Nicholas abdicated the throne in March of 1917 (69). A government by soviets (councils) was instated, but did not last long. Each of these elements contributes to the understanding of personality theory. Foundations of Personality Nature Versus Nurture The argument of whether an individual s personality is defined by nature or nurture is one of the oldest debates in psychology. On one hand, are biological theorists who use research to support the importance of genetics on behavior (Zaky, 2015). On the other hand, are theorists who support the theory of tabula rasa, which is the stance that we are born with blank slates and acquire our personality from experiences (Zaky, 2015). An example of a biological theorist is, Bowlby who viewed infant attachment as being an innate process for survival (Zaky, 2015). By contrast, behavioral theorist Bandura states that personality is developed based upon social experiences Zaky, 2015). Of note in the debate between nature and nurture in personality development is a study conducted by Dr. Fatima Kamran (2016) regarding perceived personality differences between siblings by parents. This was a very important study in regards to nature versus nurture, since both lines of thought would suggest that siblings that share genetics and home environments would be similar to each other. In this study, parents of siblings with an age difference of no more than five years, were studied to determine if they perceived differences in their children s temperaments (Kamran, 2016). My Music Concert Today,I went to the symphony for the first time. Not much of a thrilling opener, huh? What if I elaborated to say the closest I have ever gotten to a symphony was a grade four band concert, in which my little brother played the saxophone (he quit the following year.) Maybe I could compare this experience to all the DIY rock shows I attended back home in basements/back rooms where the sounds could be loud enough to deafen people standing outside and the heat could bring almost anyone to immediate sickness, but that seems a little crude. The bottom line is, I have never been fortunate enough to encounter the amount or complexity of instruments as I did at Willson Auditorium. Before continuing, I would like to express sincere gratitude toward requiring, and thus allowing, me to attend this fantastic concert. I believe that I not only enjoyed a wonderful performance but also appreciated music with knowledge and context. It is because of said knowledge and context that the music sounded lifelike, and the connections between instruments and literary ideas were formed for the first time. Upon arrival to the seats I was surprised by the vastness of the venue, and the proximity of my seat to the stage (the row directly ahead of me was front row.) Satire in Catch-22by Joseph Heller Essay Catch 22, by Joseph Heller, is a fictitious novel that depicts life on an American bomber squadron on Pianosa, an island off the coast of Italy, during the closing years of World War II. This statement is foolish and is exactly what Heller satirizes in the book; the fact that during war, the freedom and individuality of lower ranking officers are stripped away from them to satisfy the needs of higher ranking officers. Yossarian later discovers through Major Danby that Colonel Cathcart and Colonel Korn quot;can prepare as many official reports as they want and choose whichever ones they need on any given occasion, quot; which is another example of the bureaucracy allowing men to cease liberties in order to incite more power for personal use (452). When continuing his discussion with Major Danby at the end of the book, Yossarian uses an analogy to indicate to the Major just what it is like being controlled by higher powers. After Danby wishes he was a cucumber or some kind of vegetable so he did not have to make important decisions, Yossarian states that if he was a quot;good one quot; then quot;they d cut you off in your prime and slice you up for a salad quot; and if he was a quot;poor ... Second, I will summarize and explain the Cogito argument, Descartes famous I think, therefore I am (it should be noted that this famous implication is not actually something ever said or written by Descartes, but instead, an implication taken from his argument for his own existence). Third, I will critique the line of reasoning underlying these arguments. Descartes attacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes attacks the possibility of certainty with regards to the existence of small and universal elements with the possibility of our thoughts being altered by an omnipotent deceiver. In paragraph nine, he states, How do I know that he did not bring it about that there be no Earth at all, no heavens, no extended thing, no figure, no size, no place, and yet all these things should seem to me to exist precisely as they appear to do now. His point is that this omnipotent evil deceiver could create in our minds an understanding of mathematics and logic that is at odds with reality, causing us to construe everything wrongly. Thus Descartes ends this final and devastating doubt with the preliminary conclusion that everything he perceives can be called into doubt. Descartes answers his seemingly hopeless skepticism from the first meditation with the Cogito. The basic point of his Cogito argument is that for me to either perceive awry, or even to doubt my own existence, I must exist. It is, as Descartes says, I am, I exist is necessarily true every time it is uttered by me or conceived in my mind (Med2, par3). He makes two arguments for the Cogito in his second meditation. Descartes arrives at the Cogito through the notion of an omnipotent deceiver actually. He starts to question his own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Captain Americ Captains Superhero Captain America is a Marvel comic book character, created in 1940. His real name is Steve Rodgers. The Captain became a beloved superhero around the time of World War II. After being rejected by the Army, Rodgers found himself as the test subject of a super soldier project. This experiment was successful and it gave him abnormal strength, endurance, intelligence and speed. As this perfect human and soldier, Captain America worked closely with soldiers to fight against the Nazis. During a mission. Rodgers was forced to crash his plane into a glacier. This glacier kept him frozen for almost seventy years. He was eventually thawed out in modern times. Today, Captain America is a loved, and timeless superhero. The Captain has a multitude of strengths. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Captain America believes in justice, and that it must be served to those who have done wrong. For instance, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier Nick Fury was chased after agents claiming to work for local law enforcement and S.H.I.E.L.D. To hide from these men, fury went to Rodger`s home, informing him how S.H.I.E.L.D was compromised. Soon after, he was shot by the Winter Soldier. Fury later died while surgeon`s were trying to save him. The Captain made it is mission to figure out who compromised S.H.I.E.L.D and to serve them justice for their role in Fury`s death. In the United States we also have a strong sense of justice. We have an entire system that is devoted to serve justice to those have committed crimes. Another value that is important to Steve Rodgers is courage. As a superhero, one cannot be easily frightened. Therefore, Captain America is not afraid to risk his life to save others. Throughout the move he is not apprehensive about jumping out of planes, or fighting ten enemies in an elevator. In the movie, his tremendous example of courage is towards the end. The Captain was in charge of overriding the software for the three ships. This would result in the three ships blowing up. Captain America was willing to let himself die on the ship in order to successfully override the systems. This action ended up saving thousands of people. Fortunately, the Captain ... Comparison Between DrJekyll And Mr Hyde Prompt 1: An Exploration of Self Self is a definition of who we are, and that definition can come from two sources: ourselves and those we are close to. The resulting person is usually some combination of the two perceptions of self. In the works The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, this idea of self is explored. We see how a pair of characters meddle with their own definition of themselves and the eventual ramifications of the changes made. Interestingly, although the results are very different, the two pairs follow the same rules when it comes to the definition of self: the truth will always show itself, no matter how hard one tries to suppress it. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jekyll is a weak, decent man by nature. Hyde is a strong, evil man by nature. Thus Hyde overpowers and destroys Jekyll, and then himself, having nothing more to consume than the soul of his alter ego. They were true to their natures, and the rest is just simple math. The calculations for Jack and Algernon are a little more complicated, but follow the same basic equation. Take what is true about them from their various influences and add it all up. In Jack s case, his name turns out to actually be Ernest, he comes from the same family as Algernon (he s even Gwendolyn s cousin but we don t like to dwell on that), and he loves Gwendolen. These things are true about him. The double life and falsehood fades away in the face of his true self. Algernon has a bit less luck when it comes to what is true in his nature, but he gets the girl, so it s still a happy ending. Algernon s name doesn t end up being Ernest, and he gets caught in his fake persona, but Cecily loves him regardless. And then, of course, it is revealed that Jack is actually Algernon s elder brother, so his city character is actually real, without him even knowing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Music OfReggae Music Reggae music is the result of a number of different styles and genre of music being mixed together and interrupted by Jamaicans. Reggae was really created in the late 1960s as a result of music genres such as ska, rock steady, mento, American jazz, rhythm and blues, new Orleans R and B and calypso. Ska and rock steady are very much the foundations for not only Reggae but a number of these other genres too. Ska music originated in the late 1950s and was the precursor for rock steady music. Ska music was characterized by the walking bass line , meaning it has a continuous sequence of notes that are played. Rock steady is a genre created around 1966 in Jamaica and it was performed majorly by Jamaican harmony groups. Rock steady has a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The earliest known recording of reggae music is in 1968 by a group called the pioneers. The pioneers were a vocal trio who started out by singing rock steady music as well. Their first Reggae single was called Long Shot. Also in 1968 reggae was beginning to emerge in other countries; in America Johnny Nash released Hold Me Tight which is largely responsible for breaking the American market. Around the same time Reggae was beginning to influence some pop and rock bands changing or effecting their style of music such as a song by the Beatles called Ob La Di, Ob La Da. These are just a few of the early influences and developments of reggae music, there are hundreds of others. One being Bob Marely. Bob Marely was born on the 6th of February 1945 and died on the 11th of May in 1981. Robert Nesta Marley was born in Jamaica on his maternal grandfather s farm. Bob attended Stephaney primary school and junior high but he then moved to Trench Town when he was 12. Trench Town is a small slums like town in Kingston. It was here in Trench Town where Bob began his first band in 1962 named the Wailers which consisted of Bob, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso and Cherry Smith. In 1964 Coxsone Dodd, one of the few record produces in the area discovered the Wailers. That year the Wailers produced their first hit single; Simmer Down. Describe The ChemicalProcess In Making Americium Chemical process in making americium: The most popular type of smoke alarm is an ionization chamber smoke alarm. These contain 0.28 micrograms of the radioactive isotope americium 241, in the form of americium dioxide. Americium is a synthetic element, so it must be produced in a nuclear reactor. Americium is made from plutonium 241, yet this needs to also be made in a nuclear reactor. Uranium 238 in a nuclear reactor it is hit with a neutron, which makes uranium 239. Uranium 239 has a half life of 23.5 minutes, the uranium goes through beta decay becomes neptunium 239. This neptunium will then form plutonium 239 via beta decay over two days, this is then bombarded with two neutrons to become plutonium 241. Plutonium 241 has a half life of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has become a social (as well as a government) expectation to have them installed in your home. Smoke alarms save lives; without a smoke alarm you are 4 times more likely to die in the event of a fire. The americium inside the alarm is an alpha and low energy gamma emitter. Alpha radiation can be stopped by a piece of paper or a few centimetres of air, meaning you could stand under a raw sample of americium and not be in any danger. Yet, gamma radiation has the wavelength near that of an atomic nuclei (10 Pico meters) meaning that they penetrated far more easily. These rays are weak enough not to do any harm, yet are the major factor to the radiation from a smoke alarm. It has become a misconception that smoke alarms are a threat to health because of their radioactivity. The radiation emitted from a smoke alarm annually is 9 50 nano sieverts, eating banana releases the equivalent of 100 nano sieverts, the average background radiation in Australia is 2000000 nano sieverts, to put how little radiation is absorbed from a smoke alarm. The real problem is only when americium is internalised into the body, because it is an alpha emitter. It poses a threat to health because even though the alpha particles themselves are harmless, the speeds they travel give them the ability to break bonds and ionize atoms, thus causing cancer. When in the body 90% stays in you and the rest is excreted, it goes to the liver, bones and ovaries or testicles where it has the possibility to cause cancer or birth ... The Impact OfProfitability And Efficiency On Each Other Formerly discovered, efficiency and profitability are positively correlated. Hence, when the profitability of banks ameliorates their efficiency improve along. In contrast to Shaffnit et al. (1997), the impact of profitability and efficiency on each other is trivial (Akmal and Saleem, 2008). Initially, once we come across the study of banking efficiency, what usually pops into the heads is; why the efficiency of banks matters to managers, regulators, shareholders, and consumers. The reply to the above query is diverse for each of them as it relies on their standpoints (Kumar and Gulati, 2008). Source: Kumar and Gulati, 2008 Figure 12: Importance of Efficient Banks from Different Viewpoints By definition, a bank is said to be efficient if it is capable of generating more outputs like loans and investments using lesser inputs like capital and labor expenses (Staub et al. 2010). Yue (1992) stated that a firm is categorized as efficient in either of the two cases: if it generates equal output level using lesser inputs or if it generates more outputs using equal or lesser inputs. And by maintaining the control over the delivery expenses banks become further efficient (PWC, 2012). In contrast to inefficient banks, efficient ones are more capable of contesting owing to their inferior operational expenses (Kumar and Gulati, 2008). In general, banks that perform better than others display higher degrees of capitalization (Tecles and Tabak, 2010). But when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bedbug Experiment Bedbug TreatmentCost What are Bedbugs? There are different insects that can invade your home, but the bedbug can easily pass as the most frustrating. This insect lives off the blood of people and animals, typically feeding while its host sleeps. Adult bedbugs have a light brown or reddish brown color, and their tiny size makes them very difficult to discover. A peculiar thing about this insect is the fact that just one bug may invade a home and within a short period of time begin to reproduce, after which the invasion will expand fast. They can survive if they don t feed for several months and this can make bedbugs difficult to wipe out once they invade your home.
