Documentary Film Definition
0 A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to
document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of
instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record.
Documentary has been described as a film making practice, a
cinematic tradition. Documentary films were actually first
described as “actuality films” and were only around a minute or
less long. However, overtime documentaries became longer so
that more information could be fit in. Documentaries are used in
many different platforms, such as schools. They use
documentaries in school to get pupils more evolved in the
subject, or to give a more visual representation of the subject.
Since 2005 (when YouTube was created), different styles of
documentaries have been created and released to the public free
of charge.
Documentary Film Examples
0 This image is taken from the documentary
film "Crisis" directed by Robert Drew
(1963). Robert L. Drew was a pioneering
American documentary filmmaker and
sometimes called the father of cinéma
vérité, or direct cinema, in the United
States. Two of his films are archived in the
National Film Registry of the Library of
Congress. Robert Drew had a vision for a
new kind of film, one that captured the
drama of real life to allow viewers a direct
experience of other worlds. With his 1960
film, PRIMARY, Drew and his Associates
revolutionized the documentary. Drew
continued to produce groundbreaking
films for another 50 years.
0 The Beautiful Struggle is a
short film/documentary
exploring the lives of
young mothers living in the
Cayman Islands. The
documentary shows
mothers ranging from
teens to early twenties.
Showing the lives of the
different mothers.
0 The film is shot in a black and white overlay which gives an
emotional touch to it. I think it also shows the equality between
all these mothers.
0 Within the video the
editor has highlighted
some of the language used
to show how important it
is.
0 An example of a Byronic Hero is Snape (played by
Alan Rickman) in the Harry Potter films. The film
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
(directed by David Yates), focuses on this a lot.
0 Golden Oldies is a documentary made
by True Vision for BBC 1 directed by
Nick Poyntz and produced by Brian
Woods. The BAFTA award winning
production team have made an
affectionate portrayal of being old
today.
Documentary Presenters
0 Stacey Jaclyn Dooley MBE is a British
television presenter, journalist,
documentary filmmaker, media
personality and author. Since 2009, she
has made social-issue-themed television
documentaries for BBC Three concerning
child labour and women in developing
countries. Stacy presents a documentary
series on BBC3 titled “Stacy Dooley
Investigates”. Stacy is mostly known for
her informative documentaries which
highlight issues all around the world. She
covers topics from murder and
disappearances to drugs.
0 In the BBC series the style of
documentary Stacey does includes
interviews with people from the area
she's investigating and a voice over
explaining the points further.
Documentary Film Directors/producers
0 Philip Alexander Gibney is an American
documentary film director and producer.
In 2010, Esquire magazine said Gibney "is
becoming the most important
documentarian of our time”
0 Gibney’s style of documentary includes
stories of death row and stories from
around the world. He first started
directing in 1980 on a documentary titled
“The Ruling Classroom (1980)”
Lucy Walker
0 Lucy Walker is an English film director. She is best known for directing
the documentaries Devil's Playground, Blindsight, Waste Land,
Countdown to Zero, and The Crash Reel.
0 In Lucy’s documentary film career she had been named one of the “top
25 new faces in independent film”. She has been nominated for many
awards and does usually end up winning.
0 Some of her recent work includes:
0 Her latest short, The Lion's Mouth Opens, about a courageous young
woman at risk of Huntington's Disease, premiered at Sundance in 2014.
The Crash Reel, about snowboarder Kevin Pearce's life-changing
traumatic brain injury, premiered at Sundance in 2013 and won awards
including the Audience Award at
SXSW and a Gotham Award
nomination for Best Documentary.
0 Lucy has taken part in her own documentary titled ‘The Art Of
Storytelling’ by Sundance Institute.
0 The video includes her life of being a documentary film director
showing what style of director she is. In the video we learn that
she is the type of director which is hands on, she isn’t the type of
director to sit back and let her employees do all the work.
0 She also talks about her upcoming shorts. One of the shorts, The
Lion's Mouth Opens, tells the story of a young woman’s journey
going through Huntington's Disease. She talks about parts of the
edit. She said that “we shot more, exteriors and different stuff. But
in the end we edited it down really tightly.” she discusses her
decisions with doing this, she relates the audience to the
character by both being stuck waiting to get this life changing
news. She describes the documentary as emotional and personal.
Asif Kapadia
0 Asif Kapadia is a 47 year old documentary film
maker. He is best known for his 2015
documentary ‘Amy’ detailing the life of the
singer/song writer Amy Winehouse.
0 ‘Amy’ took over Kapadias other documentary
‘Senna’ to become the most successful British
Documentary of all time winning many
awards such as an OSCAR, a BAFTA and a
Grammy for best documentary.
0 Another documentary Asif is well known is
the documentary ‘wrestling the messy life of
controversial football star Diego Maradona’.
When asked why he made the film he said
“Primarily it was the reason to do it, for that
extra challenge, I’d made two films about
brilliant people who died young, and with
those, you know what the ending is.
0 I also looked at the YouTube channel Real
Stories. I chose to look at this channel because
the stories that are told in documentary form is
done in a style that I would like to do in the
future. I also looked at this because the stories
that are told are personal and mean a lot to the
people who are telling them and I think that its
very similar to the style of documentary that I
will try to make. I like that the documentaries
have been screened on a YouTube channel free
to the public gives anyone the opportunity to
watch it. This is how I would like to screen my
own films because I think it’s the best way of
getting your films out there to a larger audience.
I looked the short documentary “How far would
you go to find a lost friend? Finding Fukue - Real
Stories Original”.
“Welcome to Real
Stories, the home of
award-winning and
compelling
documentaries you
need to see. We will be
uploading at least four
full length
documentaries a week
from the best
documentary
producers on the
planet.”
0 I looked at this documentary because I liked the way the
interviewee told her story and the journey she goes on. Its also
multi-cultural, like my own documentary. I like the way this
documentary is presented as a travel style documentary. Its as if
the audience is going on the journey as well. I like this style of
documentary and would like to take parts and use them in my
production.
0 I also looked at the series they produce. I looked into the “War &
History Documentaries” series because I thought this would be the
closest to what I am planning to make.
0 My initial idea was to style my documentary as a pilot episode for a
6 part series. I want to tell different stories from different people
but from the same era. From looking at this series, they have done
just that.
Steps for making a captivating documentary
