05/01/15: Research production process for ‘Riot’
• Date of publication: This is the first step of the production process. It this the date that you want the magazine to be released to the public.
Once established you can schedule the rest of the production process.
• Managing the schedule: This is very important as it tells you how long everything should take. This overall will help you meet your
deadline.
• Editorial and budgetary decision: This is where the editorial decisions are made. This can include what topics are going to be included in
the magazine, what pictures are needed and news stories. The team then budget the decisions and look at the money they have to create
the magazine.
• Content Acquisition: There are 2 ways of gathering content. The first is through in-house writers, the second is through external writers.
Artwork and graphics should also be worked on at this stage. There is also plenty of research made by reporters and journalists into the
topics covered. This can be done through interviews, the internet and news databases.

– Checking of the accuracy of all facts in the articles
– Making sure that words are properly spelled
– `Making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly

• Page Layout: This process involves ensuring that the page layout is set up properly. This can be done through the use of Desktop
Publishing (DTP) or programs such as InDesign or Photoshop. In this section advertisers are place into content.
• Proofreading: The editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine, and go though and check for mistakes. Any mistake will
be spotted quickly and will be corrected. This section will be repeated until there are no corrections.
• File emailed to printer: Once the proofreading is finished the magazine will be sent to printing. If the editorial team are happy with the
result they will allow the magazine to be printed for the public.
• Distribution: This is the final stage of the production process and involves sending the printed copies to the warehouse. From the
warehouse they will be sold to the public.

A magazine editor is responsible for the quality of the magazines content and ensures that all the stories will attract attention. Most magazines get big
stories because they are owned by a big company, however some magazines get big stories because of their editor. Featured Editors can be employed
by trade magazines. Magazine features editors do not always need specialist knowledge of the subject they cover, unless the content is highly
technical, although an interest in the subject is usually expected.
Typical Work Activities
This role will vary based on the size of the publication and its content, but responsibilities include:
 Overseeing the layout, appearance and content of feature articles;
 Generating ideas for features with writing staff;
 Commissioning articles from freelance and in-house writers;
 Managing writing staff and freelance feature writers;
 Editing and re-writing articles, some of which may be rejected or returned to the writer for revision;
 Overseeing artwork, design and photography for the features section of the magazine;
 Attending photo shoots;
