The ideal agile team is a self organizing, dedicated, cross functional group that has all the skills necessary to deliver a solution that solves their customer’s problem. As a result, the list of roles on an agile team is fairly short generally consisting of roles such as Scrum Master, Product Owner, and the Team. Given all that, many project managers wonder where they fit in. They may act as the Product Owner if they have the skill set and decision making authority to determine what the product should contain. They may become the Scrum Master if they are able to practice servant leadership and act as a coach and facilitator. They may become part of the team and help develop or test. They may focus on coordinating the efforts of multiple agile teams to support the broader goals of a large program. They may not be a good fit for an agile environment at all. Join Kent McDonald as he describes the Product Owner and Scrum Master roles in an agile environment and discusses the various ways that project managers can assess their skill sets and project characteristics to determine where they fit into the picture.

From a risk management perspective, is waterfall ever an appropriate choice for complex IT initiatives given what we know now?
In this session we will outline how, as a risk management strategy, using the waterfall model for non-trivial systems development initiatives is systemically high risk as compared with the Iterative Incremental Development (IID) model that has been used in pockets of the IT industry since the late 1950's. Today, many organisations use the IID strategy under the umbrella term of 'Agile'. The majority of these employ Lean Product Development patterns that were first described in the Harvard Business Review in 1986 using a metaphor borrowed from the game of rugby i.e. 'Scrum'.
If you are not using a disciplined agile approach, are you facing more risk as you approach a high-stakes deadline than you need to?
The varied contexts that we work in come with varied types of risk. For a green fields date-driven release, the primary risk may be cost and schedule related. For teams designing a new product for an emerging market, the primary risks may be business risk. For teams doing innovative R&D, the primary risk may technical risk. For a young team in a new technical or business domain, the primary risk may be social risk. In this session, we will use real world examples of such varied challenges to illustrate how risk-tuned Agile helped us to manage risk effectively.
Whilst we will always have to deal with risk to create value, the good news is that there are now many powerful risk management techniques that can be overlaid on top of IID to tune your development process to the type of risk you face. The question is: which ones are most appropriate for the type of risk you are facing? Information and Technology Operating Models are rapidly changing from previously centered on projects and project management to models centered on product and product management. Agile methods and lean principles are being widely adopted to support these models. In recent Gartner survey*, 85% of respondents said their organization has adopted or plans to institute a product-centric approach for an average of 80% of their work by 2022. This shift is impacting Business Relationship Management as a role and discipline, leaving no place for the tactical BRMs in the future in product-centered organizations. Strategic BRMs, who represent IT to Business, will play an important role in this transition, to ensure that the business value is realised. However, when the Product Management matures to the enterprise level, the Business Relationship Management will evolve.

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search.
