Grammar is the basis for the English language, yet is not uncommon to approach a teenager, or even
an adult that has a genuine fear and even a distaste for grammar. While they likely know the value of
such a construct, the endless rules and complex exceptions to grammar rules has created a sense of
dread among many learners. Yet, it is not only the student that shies away from grammar
conversations, but many teachers themselves feel inadequate in the grammar usage, both in speaking
and writing, as well as their assessment of student writing. With the national push to embed writing
across the curriculum, many teachers feel ill prepared to assess students on their grammar. While they
may concede it is important, many teachers would argue the place for grammar is only in the English
classroom. However, this poses the question, if students isolate grammar usage to their English class,
how will they be equipped to transfer correct usage skills in their future careers which will likely be

There is little academic research available on professional attitudes about grammar from high school

very popular destination for the people of Paris. Cafés concerts became an integral part of Parisian
social life, as they were visited by hundreds of people each night, regardless of class. A bar at the
Folies Bergère became the topic of Edouard Manet s last painting, as Manet tried to portray the new,
modern Paris, and the introduction of mass production during this time. A Marxist art historian, T.J.
Clark finds this particular painting important because it revealed a lot about the new, modern Paris,
and Manet s intentions with the painting. Clark focuses more on the emergence of the new social class
during this time, and how this affected the role of women in Paris. The painting, A bar at Folies
Bergère, has historical significance because of how it depicts modernity in the context of the
emergence of a new social class (the petite bourgeoisie), the introduction of mass production, and the
changing role of women.
