Reflection Paper On The Wellman Well
The Wellman Well is one of the most well known spot on campus as it is close to Memorial Union.
The building was built in honor of the 13th UC President Harry R. Wellman, and built in 1969. The
building was remodeled in 1999 interiorly to keep up with the large number of students that were
using the facility. For this assignment, I have decided to work on the Wellman Hall since I have
classes in the building. Everytime I passed through the Wellman s Well I feel that I can do an
improvement by proposing a plan. During my observation, Wellman Hall is one of the most heavy
traffic area as students tend to pass through the building or surroundings area to get through places.
The building is close to the Memorial Union, which it is the port of buses and restaurants. For this
assignment. I focused on the back entrance of the Wellman Hall, Well, and surrounding area. I found
that the Well has a big space that is not being used, and there is only six benches in total. When I was
annotating my notes, I felt that the Well feels empty and obsolete as there weren t a lot of people using
the space except for getting to classes. Also, the western area of the well is a popular route that many
people go through. I found that most people go through the south side of the building instead of the
north side of the building. I feel there should be an equal flow between the south and north side of the
building to ease up the flow, and promote safety for all. My third observation is that the

Steven Dubner s Super Freakonomics
Freakonomics, in essence, is a book of completely unrelated topics relating to an underlying theme.
Topics in the book SuperFreakonomics include prostitution, terrorists, doctors with poor hygiene and
altruism in monkeys. The theme is the indication that everyone works for a reward. Steven D. Levitt
and Stephen J. Dubner are the authors of this novel. Levitt is a professor of economics at the
University of Chicago. Dubner is a former writer at the New York Times. Their goal is to explain the
fact that all of the problems in the world can be solved with economic concepts. They do so by
presenting a series of problems and attempting to find a root cause. By doing so they attempt to

This manner is that there is in each chapter an interesting story, followed by an analysis of the problem
in said story, before concluding with an solution or discovery about the underlying aspects of the
problems. Throughout this there are dozens of seemingly unconnected anecdotes that manage to tie
themselves into the greater problem. For example, the first chapter, titled how is a street prostitute like
a department store santa? starts off with an interview with a prostitute. Despite saying that she dislikes
prostitution, she admits she would do a lot more if it payed twice as much. The chapter follows this up
with a history of prostitution in Chicago. It discusses how women were likely to become prostitutes
because it payed so much more. Then the chapter analyzes why it payed so much more by going into
the supply and demand of the field. Sex was in high demand. Prostitutes were in low supply. Therefore
it was a high paying job. Overtime, as the stigma increased and casual sex became the social norm,
demand lowered, and now the modern prostitute makes a fraction of what prostitutes made a hundred
years ago. After much more discussion on the topic, the book points towards a modern study about
prostitution that shows that even non prostitutes take up prostitution during certain times of the year
(the fourth of july namely). Then it finishes by tieing back to the original question of the chapter,
stating They both take advantage of short term job opportunities brought about by holiday spikes in
demand (Levitt, 43). Thus the structure of the book is

The Bear Came Over The Mountain Analysis
The shorty story The Bear Came Over the Mountain by Alice Munro s is a story of an elder married
couple that endures moments of infidelity, love, and illness. While the movie Away from Her is a
based on this story yet it also has its moments of love, illness, and infidelity while adding a twisting
ending. Evaluating both of the medias the movie Away from Her against The Bear Came Over the
Mountain will be difficult but it will be assessed on the plot, character s, and the final judgment of
both the story and the movie.
The plot of the short story The Bear Came Over the Mountain entails a story about the life of Grant
and Fiona the two main character s in the story. Grant and Fiona have been married for several years
and during their retirement years where the rest of their lives is intended to be their time of liveliest
intimacy (Munro, 1999) besides the person you love till the end of time. Their lives are changed by
the devastating disease Alzheimer s in which Fiona slowly shows signs of deterioration. Though their
marriage hasn t always been a fairy tale given by how Grant continues to be taunted by his countless
infidelities, their love is strong. While Fiona progresses through the stages of Alzheimer s Grant
continues doubting himself for admitting Fiona to a nursing home. During this time Grant witnesses,
how his wife falls in love with another man while he watches. The film Away from Her directed by

Hasmonean Dynasty
The Hasmonean Dynasty A story of Hanukkah and the Chanukah, was when the Hasmonean Dynasty
started. Hasmonean Dynasty was the ruling of Judea and the regions that were surrounded during
ancient times. In the year of 140 and 116 BCE, the dynasty was ruled from the Seleucids in the region
of Judea. This dynasty was also spelled as Hasmonaean of the descendants from the Maccabee family.
This name came from the ancestor Hasmoneus, and Asamonaios. In 143 BC Simon Maccabeus, son of
Mattathias, which was the brother of Judas Maccabeus had succeeded, his brother Johnathan as leader
of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid dynasty. He then became of the Seleucids as high priest,

His conquest from the Holy Land was placed under the control of Seleucid Greek rulers who ruled the
Hellenistic empire. The Seleucids restricted the Torah study and desecated the Holy Temple, to
eradicate Jewish religion and culture (Stand for Israel). These Greeks were controlling the Jews on
how they would do all things. The ways they would dress, eat and think like the Greeks did. They
were then rooted out Jews in still practicing their beliefs. The Jewish people rebelled in 166 BCE.
They were led by the heroic Judah the Maccabee, of the Hasmonean family, the Jews were successful
in militarily repelling Greek rule. They entered the Temple and purified it, and found the miraculous
jug of oil. Legend tells that it had only been enough oil to light the Menorah for one night, and lasted
eight nights (Stand for Israel). Eight nights went back to the celebration of the Hanukkah for the
Jewish culture. After this triumphant return to Jerusalem, the period of Hasmonean rule began. There
were more Hasmonean victories, combined with a weakening of Seleucid authority, led the Seleucids
to return autonomy of Israel to the Jewish people. The Hasmoneans had ruled the Holy Land for a
century. The leaders believed that they were continuing the reign of the Softim and Kings of early
Israel, and they consolidated legal, religious, political and military power. They had also

measured when we perform our observations. By measuring a patient s respiratory rate, oxygen
saturations, peak flow (in asthma patients), pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, core
temperature, blood sugar, pupil reaction and Glasgow coma scale. All these combined measurement
can give us an insight into the patient s health or Physiological state.

From above you would think this was only a good thing. But unfortunately a systolic blood pressure
of below 90mmHg can cause real problems. The lower you blood pressure becomes the less blood
reaches our vital organs like the brain. This can cause simple symptoms such as dizziness or faints.
However prolonged hypotension below 80 90mmHg can cause toxins to build up in the blood, this is
because the kidneys need a certain amount of blood pressure to filter the blood properly. This can be
fatal if left untreated.
2.2 Body temperature is a measurement of the body s ability to generate or get rid of excess heat.
When the body gets to hot the blood vessels near the skin dilate to carry the excess heat to your skins
surface. You will also begin to sweat as the sweat evaporates this helps cool you body. When the body
becomes too cold our blood vessels contract, this reduces the blood flow to the skins surface to
conserve body heat. As we become colder the body can start an involuntary response called shivering.
This is where the muscles of the body rapidly contract this extra muscle activity helps generate more
heat. Normal body temperature is around 37°C this is an average of normal body temperatures. Your
temperature may actually be 0.6°C above or below 37°C depending on the outside temperature or you
level of activity.

Empathy In The Odysseus
Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we become
tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can seem to vanish. We start to put our own needs first
and others second. But what if we weren t always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of what
happens when we don t have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to
understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in
his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is inevitable.
Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how different his
lifestyle is to Polyphemus . For example when describing how the Polyphemus lives he says in
disgust, He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like some wooded peak in the high hills,
standing out alone apart from the others. (9.190 192) It is apparent from this quote that Odysseus does
not respect those who work on their own. He thinks that Polyphemus is uncivilized and a lesser being
just because his lifestyle is different from that of Odysseus . In addition Odysseus distances himself
from the cyclops by comparing their size, describing the cyclops as, so huge he cannot possibly be
man . Rather than trying to find similarities between himself and the cyclops he obsesses on their
differences. Based on the fact that Odysseus clearly does not even try to understand what the cyclops
life is

The Lowell Offering
In the article, The Lords and The Mill Girls the author Maury Klein, explains to us the rise and fall of
women working in the factory setting. In doing so he makes the argument that democracy is
incompatible with capitalism. Over time expectations about democracy can change and many times
greed is the driving factor. The author uses quotes from a variety of people, all of which corroborate
the idea the working conditions women faced in Lowell changed from being a positive model of a
work environment in a factory setting to a dismal work environment in less than 10 years. (check the
time range). Since the quotes were from a wide demographic of individuals, they are fairly reliable
because they represent more than one view about Lowell. Klein also discussed the Lowell Offering as
a source of information and its impact on the perception of the manufacturer to describe the standard
of living in Lowell. The women working in the factory contributed stories to the Lowell Offering. At
first, their writing showed that they were interested in bettering themselves by being willing to write

An example of one instance when women were working in factories was in WWI where many of the
men went to war. During WWI, women had the opportunity to work in factories making munitions for
the war. At first, it actually gave women the feeling of freedom and made the push for equality for
women to have the same rights as men move forward, although the push to have more women in the
workforce really started after the war ended. At that time, many of the women were sent back into the
home setting. This action of taking away women s freedom upset many hard working women who did
not want to leave the manufacturing work environment. Even today, equal rights for women in the
workforce is still a very heated topic for those who believe that women are still not treated

Master Harold And The Boys Quotes
A famous quote by George Orwell states If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell
people what they do not want to hear . Master Harold and the Boys, a play that was originally set in
apartheid South Africa, tells us the story of a young white boy (Hally) who felt he was superior over
two black men (Sam and Willie) simply because he felt they were servants to his mother, thus they
were of no significant in the society at that time. Although the social challenges of writing literatures
like Master Harold and the Boys was risky and challenging, Fugard uses simple day to day events and
interactions between Hally and Sam to expose the injustices committed by the apartheid Government
at that time.
Hally as a teenager was very considerate of the socio political struggles that were going on in South
Africa at that time wherein blacks were oppressed by the whites. As a result of this, he used this
motive to mock Sam and Willie on several scenes in the play. He s a white man and that s good
enough for you. (pg. 53) In this quote, Hally was insisting that Sam must call his father Boss since he
was white and the one paying him (Sam) as he claimed. This ... Show more content on

significance in the society. .....To be one of those finalists on that dance floor is like...like being a

Dionysus Analysis
This sculpture was given the title, Dionysus, and is dated at 50 150 A.D. During that period, the
Roman Empire went through a civil war, multiple rebellions, a couple disastrous fires, the building of
the Colosseum, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the peak of Roman military expansion and thirteen
different Emperors. One of which started the Flavian Dynasty, which would bring stability to the
empire that was crumbling because of financial strife. With all of these events happening, good and
bad, it seems difficult to pin point the inspiration or message behind this sculpture. But if you break
that period of time down into parts, it may be easier to get a feel for what the artist was feeling so

Iron-Sulfur World Hypothesis Essay
There are many hypotheses about the formation of a primitive terrestrial environment. These
hypotheses explain the origin of biomolecules including amino acids, purines, sugars, and many more.
These hypotheses verify the creation of molecules through these various processes.
The Iron Sulfur world hypothesis proposes the idea that Chemoautotrophic organisms were the first
creations on earth and that they get their energy from the oxidative formation of pyrite. Chemotrophs
are organisms that obtain energy by the oxidation of electron donors in their environments. Gunter
Wachtershauser is the german scientist who came up with this idea, received on October 30, 1989.
Gunter suggested that the organism must be an intermediate of carbon, meaning that it is formed by
one reaction and taking part in another, involving carbon. The organism must also be able to acquire
electrons and have an irreversible metabolism.
Carl Woese, Francis Crick and Leslie Orgel, in the 1960s, proposed the idea that the single stranded
proteins, RNA, were solely relied on. This theory is called, the RNA world hypothesis. They believed

Dante’s Inferno in Milton´s Paradise Lost
Many arguments have been made that Dante s Inferno glimmers through here and there in Milton s
Paradise Lost. While at first glance the two poems seem quite drastically different in their portrayal of
Hell, but scholars have made arguments that influence from Dante shines through Milton s work as
well as arguments refuting these claims. All of these arguments have their own merit and while there
are instances where a Dantean influence can be seen throughout Paradise Lost, Milton s progression of
evil and Satan are quite different from Dante. Dante s influence on Milton is noted by many scholars
and is very apparent in several instances throughout Paradise Lost, however, Milton shows a
progression of evil through his own vision of Satan and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his article, he discusses many of the authors previously mentioned such as Samuel, Hollander, and
Gurteen, and develops his own ideas about Milton s use of Dante s form of punishments. He makes
note of the fact that when Satan returns to Hell after successfully tempting Eve...he hears a universal
hiss as he and his crew transform into serpents which is clearly an allusion to that which the thieves
undergo in Cantos 24 and 25 of Dante s Inferno.
Other scholars agree that there is some flicker of Dante through Paradise Lost but argue that, although
there are instances where it seems clear of the influence, Milton and Dante s versions of Hell and
Satan are quite different.
In S. Humphreys Gurteen The Epic of The Fall of Man: A Comparative Study of Caedmon, Dante and
Milton he says, the influence of Dante s strong imagination, however, is evident throughout Paradise
Lost. It is not plagiarism, it is not imitation, it is the effect that must necessarily follow from the
contact of one powerful imagination, strong intellect, and deeply erudite mind, on that of another, in
many respects, his equal. (Gurteen, 383) While he explores

The Black Death left more than an impact on the population of Florence and Siena in Italy, it impacted
the economy, the religious views, and the art of the thirteenth century. Millard Meiss in his book
Painting In Florence And Siena After The Black Death highlights the changes that occur in the artistic
world in Florence and Siena after the Black Death hits in 1348, 1363, and 1374. He focuses on the
similarities between the two cities and reasons behind them such as the common experience of
economic failure, pestilence, social conflict, their fear, sense of guilt, and varieties of their religious

The chapter is structured to tell of the economic and political crises the cities experienced leading up
to the Black Death then moves onto the effects the plague had on culture and art. In the section about
the Black Death, Meiss used statistics of deaths in the cities to prove himself credible on the subject
but did not state the source from which he got the numbers. He also included anecdotes from survivors
such as Angolo di Tura to give a sense of imagery of the bodies piled up in the streets, piling them up
tier upon tier as merchandise is stowed in a ship (P. 65). In the section labeled The Effect Upon
Culture And Art, Meiss talks about the new opinions on art specifically about religious art, which
there was a new demand for. He explains in detail after the plague people led lives of irresponsible
pleasure. The reason Meiss talked about this consequence of the plague the most in the chapter was to
show how the people of the two cities lived each day like it was their last and became self indulgent.
He ties the conclusion of the chapter back to art and how the artists of the time transitioned into a new

The Personification Of Death In The Seventh Seal And Everyman
Everyman is a morality play from the 15th century with no known author, and The Seventh Seal is a
1950 s fantasy film about a knight returning from the Crusades. Although the timelines for these two
pieces don t match up, they share a lot of similarities: the most prominent of which being the
personification of death into a character. Both pieces feature death as an ever present entity and
solidify the inevitability of death. However, through the characterizations of death within these two
pieces, the two offer differing views on the role of religion in human mortality, and the creators offer
interesting views of human relationships with death himself. One of the initial confrontations with
death in both pieces features the concept of delaying death. In Everyman, the titular character is
confronted by death as God s messenger and he initially attempts to bribe death. However, death states
Everyman, it may not be by no way. / I set not by gold, silver, nor riches, / Nor by pope, emperor,
king, duke, nor princes (124 6). By stating this, the author further highlights the inevitability of death.
Following this statement, Everyman is given the opportunity to find those who would walk with him
to face death, thus delaying his demise. Similarly, Antonius Block, of The Seventh Seal, attempts to
play chess with death in order to, at least initially, delay his perishing. Both characters become focused
on beating death in some way, but the results further substantiate death s

The Music Of Jamaican Music And Music In The Jamaican Culture
Reggae is a large part of Jamaican culture and has expanded to be popular globally. It was made
popular throughout the 1960s mainly by a group from Jamaica called the wailers. They spread the
genre to numerous parts of the world and touring widely and eventually gaining a following. They had

from American genres of jazz and rhythm blues. The main features from these that made a song
reggae are the skank on the offbeat played in the chord and by a guitar usually. Another feature is
typically a bass melody or it can also be played by on organ. Vocals are another common item in
reggae music, Bob Marley was the primary vocalist of his group. Reggae is typically a slower tempo
at around 75, also it is almost always written in 4/4. Reggae has taken influence from different
cultures as its popularity spread around the world for example in Spain the local reggae style would be
slightly different to the regular reggae style from Jamaica.
The style of reggae has held itself through time, from when earlier version originated in Jamaica in the

The Performance Appraisal Process Is Defined As The...
The performance appraisal process is defined as the process which a manager (1) examines and
evaluates an employee s work behavior by comparing it with preset standards, (2) documents the
results of the comparison, and (3) uses the results to provide feedback to the employee to show where
improvements are needed and why (Business Dictionary, 2015). Performance appraisals are used to
determine who needs what training, and who will be promoted, demoted, retained, or fired within
organizations (Business Dictionary, 2015). Performance appraisals have changed over time (Glen,
1990). The BARS or behaviorally anchored rating scales evaluated employee traits such as reliability
and cooperation (Glen, 1990). This system was later replaced by a management by objectives which
sets performance objectives and appraised (Glen, 1990). More recently this was replaced by the merit
pay and pay for performance systems (Glen, 1990). All the appraisal system attempt to maximize
objectivity while minimizing uncertainty and subjectivity (Glen, 1990). Performance appraisals are
often viewed as a no win situation by both managers and employees (Glen, 1990). Managers view
performance appraisals as their job to provide performance feedback and motivate employees in order
to drive individual and organizational improvements (Glen, 1990). Employees see performance
appraisals as the means to an increased income, improved skills through developmental training and
promotional opportunities (Glen,

Essay on Importance of Symbols in “the Thing in the Forest”
Brandon Doder 11/1/11 Importance of Symbols in The Thing in the Forest In many fairytales, we are
given characters who set out on an adventure to better themselves whether they know that they are on
one or not. In A.S. Byatt s The Thing in the Forest we are taken on such an adventure, but this is more
than just a children s fairytale. Through figurative language we are shown that the main characters,
Penny and Primrose, are dealing with more than just a creature in the forest, and that with this use of
symbols as a way to express a larger meaning to objects in the story, we better understand how Penny
and Primrose are dealing with being away from their family during a time of war in England. In this
story we are exposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the use of symbols, Byatt can make reference to problems with the girls or make a comment on
the larger picture of war at the time. The three largest symbols that appear in the story are the mansion,
the forest, and of course, the thing in the forest. Each symbol represents something bigger in the whole
scheme of things. The mansion that the girls are first sent to is a cold and dreary place to the children.
Byatt describes the mansion as cold and dark. This is because of war time in England and they are
tying to not be obvious. This dreariness only helps the symbol of the mansion to represent what is
going on at that time. The house is a representation of the State. That being the government and
everything that is part of the security it provides. There is a sense of security in a way that the mansion
is used. The government commandeered the mansion for use as a safe house, although there still is a
feeling of doubt about it. To the girls and other children, the mansion is a place of security or home
until they move on. This is most likely not what the girls had in mind when they arrived. For them to
feel any sort of comfort in this time of tragedy, they will need to stick together and make the best of
the situation. The girls seemed to be thinking the worst of every event but at the mansion, things were
taken care of to the best of the ability of the adults there to care for them. Unlike the

Cover Songs Comparison
In the music industry, it is not uncommon for original songs to be rerecorded and altered by other
artists resulting in what is known as a cover song. One example of this situations occurrence can be
seen in Vance Joy s indie folk pop song, Riptide , that was famously covered by pop and country
crossover artist, Taylor Swift. Overall, there are many factors that go into the relationship between an
original and cover song and the artists of each song. Such as both artist s connection to the song and
the relationship between the artists themselves. There are also differences between the original and
cover songs themselves including song structure, instrumentation, vocals, lyrics, and lyrical meaning.
Vance Joy and Taylor Swift met for the first time backstage in New York at the Late Night Show with
David Letterman (Whitney). By the time for their first meeting, Swift had already covered Joy s hit
single, Riptide , on a British radio station and announced her invitation for Joy to join her as the
opening act on her international 1989 tour (Adams). Though Joy is an indie folk pop singer and Swift
a country, pop singer, the two managed to join their audiences together and create continued mass
popularity for Riptide as well as promote listeners of both genres to hear the two perform at the 1989
tour. As Joy was used to performing in smaller venues, the packed auditoriums that Swift s tour filled
were a new experience for him and encouraged him to step outside his

renowned biologists and historians and many written evidence of the administration of Governor
George Arthur who was appointed to look over the British Settlers and Aborigines living in Tasmania.

The Tax Reform Act Of 1986
More than 25 years ago, there was a major overhaul of the U.S. corporate tax system. The Tax Reform
Act of 1986 reduced a corporate tax rate from 46 percent to 34 (Gross Schadewald, 2012, p. 40). The
federal budget deficit forced the government to lower the corporate tax rate. The level of corporate tax
rate in the USA was lower than it was in Canada, Germany, and France. The tax rate for corporations
remained unchanged until 2011. In 2011, fiscal barriers led to changes of the tax reform. Today, the
reform package includes the exclusion of deductions and credits, and tax rate reduction. However, the
net effect of those components may boost the tax liability of domestic companies.
The most recent economic crisis influenced the changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The value of study cannot be overemphasized since the federal tax reform is a driving factor of
success of U.S. companies within country borders and in the global market.
Literature Review
The main objective of many companies is to minimize their tax obligations. Jeffers (2014) discussed
the reason of why companies adopt tax inversion strategies. The researcher indicated that the income
maximization is a major reason of companies attempting to reduce their tax liability (pp. 100 101).
Tax inversion strategies provide companies an advantage to lower income tax rate. Today, U.S.
corporations renounce its U.S. citizenship and move to low tax countries. Companies that
reincorporate oversees are not obligated to pay U.S. taxes on earning income (p. 99). Many countries
implement tax competition strategies to attract and retain businesses. Well known companies, such as
Exxon Mobil, Hewlett Packard, Tyco, General Electric, PepsiCo, etc. take benefits of tax shelter
opportunities overseas (p. 102). Other benefits of the jurisdiction abroad are flexible banking laws and
simplified litigation processes.
Bull, Dowd, and Moomau (2011) analyzed the macroeconomic perspectives of corporate tax reform.
The researchers indicated that it is important to consider changes in tax treatment reduce a current rate
from 35 percent to 30, and eliminate various loopholes in the

You tore of your headphones, and faced him with your bottom lip childishly protruding out, Come on
Hobi, you promised.
Yeah, and now I m terrified.
You walked toward him with a notepad in hand and softly smiled at his scared state. I really need this
data for my Psych assignment. It s really important to me...and it d be so much more fun if you were

You quietly snickered.
Hoseok went through trial after trial for the past hour and you recorded every moment of it. Every

Ok Hoseok, we have one more experiment left and I m gonna need your patience and complete

Citizen Kane Is A Quarry For Filmmakers
As esteemed film director William Friedkin once said; Citizen Kane is a quarry for filmmakers . It is
undeniable that Citizen Kane is the epitome of the great American film. It was initially released in
1941 and was met with great criticism . However, since its release many years ago it is evident that the
film made advancements in cinema techniques which were well ahead of its time . The foremost
reason Citizen Kane is considered one of the great American films ever created is due to the
innovative film techniques that director Orson Welles brought to life .These techniques include new
methods for cinematography, lighting, and sound . The cinematography in Citizen Kane is one of the
primary reasons it is viewed as one of the most celebrated works in cinema. The initiation of new
approaches to cinematography is greatly credited to cinematographer Greg Toland. Toland who was
known for his work as director of photography for such films as Dead End (1937), Wuthering Heights
(1939) which he won an academy award for, The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and many more. The
collaboration between Welles and Toland broke the traditions of atypical 1940 s film. Essentially, this
meant that there should not be great attention to participation of the camera. However, Welles and
Toland attempted to attract as much attention to the camera as possible, by using dramatic angles and
unusual shots. As Martin Scorsese said; Welles was not afraid to be self conscious with the camera .

Causes Of Chinese Stock Market Crash Essay
Chapter 2: Causes of the Chinese stock market crash
In the previous chapter, the researcher has covered some basic information about the stock market.
Hence, in this chapter, the current situation that the Chinese stock market is suffering from and factors
contributing towards this crisis will be analysed. At the end of this chapter, readers will have an idea
how a market which was stable for many years could become unsteady within such a short period of
time.
2.1. The definition of a stock market crash
A stock market crash represents a steep fall in the value of market prices and it is often the factor
creating economic depression (Galbraith, 1988). However, the value of the drop that can be
considered as a predictor for the crash is debatable. On one hand, Mishkin (1990) argues that the stock
market crash only occurs when there was a 20 percent fall in stock price across crucial cross sections
of a market. On the other hand, Patel and Sarkar (1998) define a stock market crash as a fall of more
than 35 percent of the market s stock value. No matter how large the percentage of a drop in the price
of stocks is on the stock market, both theories agree that the most devastating crashes are usually
consequences of an overly inflated market, which is also known as a bubble (Mishkin, 1990; Pater
Sarkar, 1998).
2.2. The definition of a bubble in the stock market
A bubble in a stock market is an investing phenomenon involving the excessive expectation of
investors concerning

  • 2. Reflection Paper On The Wellman Well The Wellman Well is one of the most well known spot on campus as it is close to Memorial Union. The building was built in honor of the 13th UC President Harry R. Wellman, and built in 1969. The building was remodeled in 1999 interiorly to keep up with the large number of students that were using the facility. For this assignment, I have decided to work on the Wellman Hall since I have classes in the building. Everytime I passed through the Wellman s Well I feel that I can do an improvement by proposing a plan. During my observation, Wellman Hall is one of the most heavy traffic area as students tend to pass through the building or surroundings area to get through places. The building is close to the Memorial Union, which it is the port of buses and restaurants. For this assignment. I focused on the back entrance of the Wellman Hall, Well, and surrounding area. I found that the Well has a big space that is not being used, and there is only six benches in total. When I was annotating my notes, I felt that the Well feels empty and obsolete as there weren t a lot of people using the space except for getting to classes. Also, the western area of the well is a popular route that many people go through. I found that most people go through the south side of the building instead of the north side of the building. I feel there should be an equal flow between the south and north side of the building to ease up the flow, and promote safety for all. My third observation is that the ... Topics in the book SuperFreakonomics include prostitution, terrorists, doctors with poor hygiene and altruism in monkeys. The theme is the indication that everyone works for a reward. Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner are the authors of this novel. Levitt is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Dubner is a former writer at the New York Times. Their goal is to explain the fact that all of the problems in the world can be solved with economic concepts. They do so by presenting a series of problems and attempting to find a root cause. By doing so they attempt to present to the readers a way to look at the world through an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This manner is that there is in each chapter an interesting story, followed by an analysis of the problem in said story, before concluding with an solution or discovery about the underlying aspects of the problems. Throughout this there are dozens of seemingly unconnected anecdotes that manage to tie themselves into the greater problem. For example, the first chapter, titled how is a street prostitute like a department store santa? starts off with an interview with a prostitute. Despite saying that she dislikes prostitution, she admits she would do a lot more if it payed twice as much. The chapter follows this up with a history of prostitution in Chicago. It discusses how women were likely to become prostitutes because it payed so much more. Then the chapter analyzes why it payed so much more by going into the supply and demand of the field. Sex was in high demand. Prostitutes were in low supply. Therefore it was a high paying job. Overtime, as the stigma increased and casual sex became the social norm, demand lowered, and now the modern prostitute makes a fraction of what prostitutes made a hundred years ago. After much more discussion on the topic, the book points towards a modern study about prostitution that shows that even non prostitutes take up prostitution during certain times of the year (the fourth of july namely). Then it finishes by tieing back to the original question of the chapter, stating They both take advantage of short term job opportunities brought about by holiday spikes in demand (Levitt, 43). Thus the structure of the book is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His conquest from the Holy Land was placed under the control of Seleucid Greek rulers who ruled the Hellenistic empire. The Seleucids restricted the Torah study and desecated the Holy Temple, to eradicate Jewish religion and culture (Stand for Israel). These Greeks were controlling the Jews on how they would do all things. The ways they would dress, eat and think like the Greeks did. They were then rooted out Jews in still practicing their beliefs. The Jewish people rebelled in 166 BCE. They were led by the heroic Judah the Maccabee, of the Hasmonean family, the Jews were successful in militarily repelling Greek rule. They entered the Temple and purified it, and found the miraculous jug of oil. Legend tells that it had only been enough oil to light the Menorah for one night, and lasted eight nights (Stand for Israel). Eight nights went back to the celebration of the Hanukkah for the Jewish culture. After this triumphant return to Jerusalem, the period of Hasmonean rule began. There were more Hasmonean victories, combined with a weakening of Seleucid authority, led the Seleucids to return autonomy of Israel to the Jewish people. But unfortunately a systolic blood pressure of below 90mmHg can cause real problems. The lower you blood pressure becomes the less blood reaches our vital organs like the brain. This can cause simple symptoms such as dizziness or faints. However prolonged hypotension below 80 90mmHg can cause toxins to build up in the blood, this is because the kidneys need a certain amount of blood pressure to filter the blood properly. This can be fatal if left untreated. 2.2 Body temperature is a measurement of the body s ability to generate or get rid of excess heat. When the body gets to hot the blood vessels near the skin dilate to carry the excess heat to your skins surface. You will also begin to sweat as the sweat evaporates this helps cool you body. When the body becomes too cold our blood vessels contract, this reduces the blood flow to the skins surface to conserve body heat. As we become colder the body can start an involuntary response called shivering. This is where the muscles of the body rapidly contract this extra muscle activity helps generate more heat. • 8. Empathy In The Odysseus Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we become tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can seem to vanish. We start to put our own needs first and others second. But what if we weren t always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of what happens when we don t have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is inevitable. Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus . For example when describing how the Polyphemus lives he says in disgust, He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like some wooded peak in the high hills, standing out alone apart from the others. (9.190 192) It is apparent from this quote that Odysseus does not respect those who work on their own. He thinks that Polyphemus is uncivilized and a lesser being just because his lifestyle is different from that of Odysseus . In addition Odysseus distances himself from the cyclops by comparing their size, describing the cyclops as, so huge he cannot possibly be man . Rather than trying to find similarities between himself and the cyclops he obsesses on their differences. Based on the fact that Odysseus clearly does not even try to understand what the cyclops life is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Lowell Offering In the article, The Lords and The Mill Girls the author Maury Klein, explains to us the rise and fall of women working in the factory setting. In doing so he makes the argument that democracy is incompatible with capitalism. Over time expectations about democracy can change and many times greed is the driving factor. The author uses quotes from a variety of people, all of which corroborate the idea the working conditions women faced in Lowell changed from being a positive model of a work environment in a factory setting to a dismal work environment in less than 10 years. (check the time range). Since the quotes were from a wide demographic of individuals, they are fairly reliable because they represent more than one view about Lowell. Klein also discussed the Lowell Offering as a source of information and its impact on the perception of the manufacturer to describe the standard of living in Lowell. The women working in the factory contributed stories to the Lowell Offering. At first, their writing showed that they were interested in bettering themselves by being willing to write for a ... At that time, many of the women were sent back into the home setting. This action of taking away women s freedom upset many hard working women who did not want to leave the manufacturing work environment. • 11. Master Harold And The Boys Quotes A famous quote by George Orwell states If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear . Master Harold and the Boys, a play that was originally set in apartheid South Africa, tells us the story of a young white boy (Hally) who felt he was superior over two black men (Sam and Willie) simply because he felt they were servants to his mother, thus they were of no significant in the society at that time. Although the social challenges of writing literatures like Master Harold and the Boys was risky and challenging, Fugard uses simple day to day events and interactions between Hally and Sam to expose the injustices committed by the apartheid Government at that time. Hally as a teenager was very considerate of the socio political struggles that were going on in South Africa at that time wherein blacks were oppressed by the whites. As a result of this, he used this motive to mock Sam and Willie on several scenes in the play. He s a white man and that s good enough for you. During that period, the Roman Empire went through a civil war, multiple rebellions, a couple disastrous fires, the building of the Colosseum, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the peak of Roman military expansion and thirteen different Emperors. One of which started the Flavian Dynasty, which would bring stability to the empire that was crumbling because of financial strife. With all of these events happening, good and bad, it seems difficult to pin point the inspiration or message behind this sculpture. The Iron Sulfur world hypothesis proposes the idea that Chemoautotrophic organisms were the first creations on earth and that they get their energy from the oxidative formation of pyrite. Chemotrophs are organisms that obtain energy by the oxidation of electron donors in their environments. Gunter Wachtershauser is the german scientist who came up with this idea, received on October 30, 1989. Gunter suggested that the organism must be an intermediate of carbon, meaning that it is formed by one reaction and taking part in another, involving carbon. The organism must also be able to acquire electrons and have an irreversible metabolism. Carl Woese, Francis Crick and Leslie Orgel, in the 1960s, proposed the idea that the single stranded proteins, RNA, were solely relied on. This theory is called, the RNA world hypothesis. They believed that an ... While at first glance the two poems seem quite drastically different in their portrayal of Hell, but scholars have made arguments that influence from Dante shines through Milton s work as well as arguments refuting these claims. All of these arguments have their own merit and while there are instances where a Dantean influence can be seen throughout Paradise Lost, Milton s progression of evil and Satan are quite different from Dante. The reduction in the cost meant that almost everyone was now able to afford the price of a prosthetic limb, and it was no longer a privileged thing for the rich and powerful, though the prosthetic limbs of the rich and powerful were constructed primarily using more advanced materials. In the 19th century, further improvement were made onto the advanced prosthetic limbs that helped shape how prosthetic limbs should be manufactured, and the functionality it should be able to perform. Pieter Verduyn, a mechanic at the time, created the first non locking below knee prosthesis, which would soon be the blueprint for all other joint and corset devices. The Personification Of Death In The Seventh Seal And Everyman Everyman is a morality play from the 15th century with no known author, and The Seventh Seal is a 1950 s fantasy film about a knight returning from the Crusades. Although the timelines for these two pieces don t match up, they share a lot of similarities: the most prominent of which being the personification of death into a character. Both pieces feature death as an ever present entity and solidify the inevitability of death. However, through the characterizations of death within these two pieces, the two offer differing views on the role of religion in human mortality, and the creators offer interesting views of human relationships with death himself. One of the initial confrontations with death in both pieces features the concept of delaying death. In Everyman, the titular character is confronted by death as God s messenger and he initially attempts to bribe death. However, death states Everyman, it may not be by no way. / I set not by gold, silver, nor riches, / Nor by pope, emperor, king, duke, nor princes (124 6). By stating this, the author further highlights the inevitability of death. The performance appraisal process is defined as the process which a manager (1) examines and evaluates an employee s work behavior by comparing it with preset standards, (2) documents the results of the comparison, and (3) uses the results to provide feedback to the employee to show where improvements are needed and why (Business Dictionary, 2015). Performance appraisals are used to determine who needs what training, and who will be promoted, demoted, retained, or fired within organizations (Business Dictionary, 2015). Performance appraisals have changed over time (Glen, 1990). The BARS or behaviorally anchored rating scales evaluated employee traits such as reliability and cooperation (Glen, 1990). Essay on Importance of Symbols in “the Thing in the Forest” Brandon Doder 11/1/11 Importance of Symbols in The Thing in the Forest In many fairytales, we are given characters who set out on an adventure to better themselves whether they know that they are on one or not. In A.S. Byatt s The Thing in the Forest we are taken on such an adventure, but this is more than just a children s fairytale. Through figurative language we are shown that the main characters, Penny and Primrose, are dealing with more than just a creature in the forest, and that with this use of symbols as a way to express a larger meaning to objects in the story, we better understand how Penny and Primrose are dealing with being away from their family during a time of war in England. The three largest symbols that appear in the story are the mansion, the forest, and of course, the thing in the forest. Each symbol represents something bigger in the whole scheme of things. The mansion that the girls are first sent to is a cold and dreary place to the children. Byatt describes the mansion as cold and dark. This is because of war time in England and they are tying to not be obvious. This dreariness only helps the symbol of the mansion to represent what is going on at that time. The house is a representation of the State. That being the government and everything that is part of the security it provides. There is a sense of security in a way that the mansion is used. The government commandeered the mansion for use as a safe house, although there still is a feeling of doubt about it. To the girls and other children, the mansion is a place of security or home until they move on. This is most likely not what the girls had in mind when they arrived. For them to feel any sort of comfort in this time of tragedy, they will need to stick together and make the best of the situation. However, since its release many years ago it is evident that the film made advancements in cinema techniques which were well ahead of its time . The foremost reason Citizen Kane is considered one of the great American films ever created is due to the innovative film techniques that director Orson Welles brought to life .These techniques include new methods for cinematography, lighting, and sound . The cinematography in Citizen Kane is one of the primary reasons it is viewed as one of the most celebrated works in cinema. At the end of this chapter, readers will have an idea how a market which was stable for many years could become unsteady within such a short period of time. 2.1. The definition of a stock market crash A stock market crash represents a steep fall in the value of market prices and it is often the factor creating economic depression (Galbraith, 1988). However, the value of the drop that can be considered as a predictor for the crash is debatable. On one hand, Mishkin (1990) argues that the stock market crash only occurs when there was a 20 percent fall in stock price across crucial cross sections of a market. On the other hand, Patel and Sarkar (1998) define a stock market crash as a fall of more than 35 percent of the market s stock value. No matter how large the percentage of a drop in the price of stocks is on the stock market, both theories agree that the most devastating crashes are usually consequences of an overly inflated market, which is also known as a bubble (Mishkin, 1990; Pater Sarkar, 1998). 2.2.
