This document provides information and examples for researching magazine production for print. It includes examples of magazine covers and interior page spreads from publications like Vogue, Elle, Decor, and Paper. Details are given on magazine design conventions like mastheads, cover lines, and barcodes. Formats for Vogue, Elle, and Decor websites are examined. The document also outlines practice done with InDesign and Photoshop for print layouts. An idea is proposed for a Christmas-themed magazine cover shoot featuring twin models in silver and gold looks. Font, photography, and production plans are discussed for developing the proposed magazine cover concept.

3. VOGUE WEBSITE.
The Vogue website is a modern way
of advertising their magazine. It is
good for the younger generation
who use their phones and laptops
to get involved with the magazine,
as it is more of a daily update on
beauty and fashion instead of a
monthly issue. It still involves
photographs and a lot of text, as it
is still set out as a magazine just
online, making it more accessible. It
Is full of the latest news and the top
stories, as well as providing more of
a variety on tips and products and
can go into a bit more detail within
advising and what trends are in.
4. PAGE SPREAD OF A FASHION MAGAZINE- VOGUE.Vogue tends to have a lot
of writing around the topi
of the photographs, as it i
a well known and
trustworthy magazine and
gives a lot of tips and
information about the
subject.
6. ELLE MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.
Elle has structured this
double page spread with
different shapes and sizes
of photographs and
images of beauty
products with little bits of
text around them. This will
engage the readers by
looking at the
photographs and well
known faces then reading
onto the topic.
10. DÉCOR MAGAZINE PAGE SPREAD.
As Decor is an interior
design magazine, the
double page spreads
tend to just be
photograph of ideas and
inspiration for their
audience. The magazine
is more for looking and
admiring rather than
reading a lot of text.
14. TYPE FACE AND STYLE OF FONT.
VOGUE-
The VOGUE title is always the same font on every magazine cover. This is a well
known and recognizable factor of the magazine, it has connotations of chic and
simplicity which vogue represents as a magazine itself. The fact the font is in
capitals conveys a bold image and entices the audience by gripping them to read
on. If the font is big and has an eye catching kick to it, it tends to help the audience
to notice and read on being more engaged. For fashion magazines it needs to be
nice to look at and not too harsh (or too soft)otherwise you wouldn’t notice it. The
font is always structured around a photograph and helps to make it look more
elegant on the eye and luxurious- this tends to be high-end magazines as like ELLE
or Vogue that are a beautiful and dainty.
15. WORDS- WRITING STYLE, LANGUAGE, TEXT/IMAGE
RATIO AND MODE OF ADDRESS.
• Language- The language within fashion magazines tends to be about persuading the readers
and giving advice, as well as informing about recent trends and giving tips. They tend to
enhance closeness with the audience so they are more engaged with what they are informing
them with. The language involves a lot of imperatives and instructions like ‘how to’ and ‘you
should’. Fashion stylists/journalists are normally quite informal with the reader to be more
intimate and familiar, as it makes the reader more likely to take on board someones advice if
they trust them, therefore if they are more personal it maintains social bonds. The mode is
direct address because of the use of ’your’ and ’you’, however it depends on the type of fashion
magazine. A magazine like Vogue would be more formal and less direct then say a magazine
like cosmopolitan. The structure of a fashion magazine normally starts off with a photograph of
a public figure that leads on to tips and how to combine it with a topic, it always links to the text
and there tends to be a ratio of photos with the information around it.
16. COLOUR SCHEME FOR FASHION MAGAZINES.
• Colour schemes tend to change in each issue of fashion magazines depending on
the model and subject. In general however, they are beige and pastel
backgrounds with subtle and elegant features. The colour represents an
important element in design so they have to be right to the magazine and fit well.
The colours used for the cover should be tones that appear in the main
photograph to create harmony, or in a contrasting combination to give a different
feeling.
17. CONVENTIONS.
• Bar code- With all magazines, it is obviously acquired so it can be scanned as people
have to buy the product.
• Masthead- The masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most
eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct.
• Cover lines- short statements found on the cover of the magazine that allude to or
describe the articles inside. Their purpose is to entice the reader into picking up and/
or buying the magazine. Generally there’s one main larger cover line and then a few
(or lots of) smaller ones.
• Blobs and stars- these are used to catch the readers eye and add additional
information and can highlight certain bits that you wouldn’t be able to notice on a
background by themselves.
18. PAPER MAGAZINE COVERS.
Paper magazine
is very bright
and bold, it is an
eye catching
and vibrant
cover that is
very different to
a magazine such
as Elle or vogue.
It has more of a
younger
generation of
audience
therefore
explaining the
less subtle
choice of colour
and fonts.
19. PORTER MAGAZINE.
The colours chosen on these
covers are very subtle and
natural, the magazine itself
represent simplicity and elegance
which the colours have
connations of. White and creams
convey purity and a sense of
sophistication. The colours and
font represent a higher end and
distinguished over all out look on
the magazine, giving it an
audience of older women in their
30s to 60s, as it is very tasteful
and a bit too mature for younger
generations.
24. IN DESIGN WORK- PRINT.
• For our print production, we have been practicing using In design and photoshop to
get us started for when we start to design our own magazine cover and double
page spread. I now know how to use in design and the different tools to complete a
double page spread of my own. I understand the basics of working with a grid and
putting texts and images together to portray an double page spread lay out. I
didn’t find it as simple as photoshop, however it has different qualities that are
some what better at making my work look more professional.
25. WEBSITE EVALUATION FOR PRINT.
• For my practice with the websites, I used free websites called WIX and world
press. I thought WIX was really easy to use and the templates were useful in re-
creating my own from. However, world press was quite poorly detailed and it was
hard to re-create your own from a template. WIX had more tools to use such as
colours, backgrounds, and adding more text in other places- it was a lot more
flexible with the design prospect than worldpress was.
26. PHOTOSHOP.
• Ive used photoshop a few times now for other projects, so I’m now very familiar
with the tools and different ways I can portray what I’m wanting my outcome to
look like. I used this to my advantage with my magazine cover pratice and made
it look more professional by cutting around certain pictures and over lapping my
texts.
28. IDEA GENERATION
• IMAGES-
• Models: For my models, I am using my friends kate and Charlotte oliver who are twins. I thought
this would be a very eye-catching and unique cover for a magazine of twins as it will have a
shock factor and I can contrast their outfits and make up as silver and gold which is what I
wanted for my theme.
• Style- for the style of my images, I want to have a close up shot of the twins together or looking
at eachother, charlotte in silver and kate in gold. I want the make up to play a big part but also
be quite simplistic and neautral. I want it to seem like a bit of an illusion, where they have their
faces really close together so it has a big effect.
• Locations- I’m not sure whether I want my location to be outside or in the studio at the moment.
If it was outside I would want it to be day light and probably early in the morning, and inside I
would like it with a white background in the studio.
29. FONTS.
I want my font to come across as very bold and make sure it catches the eye, but
also elegant and not too harsh. My title for my magazine is ‘MODA’ and I want this
to be in capitals either in the colour black or red. I want to make sure it stands out
and hopefully the readers will work out that it has a hidden meaning as moda
means fashion in italian- I think this creates depth to my magazine as its short and
simplistic but has a relevant meaning behind it. I want it to be in italics and have a
look that’s quite feminine and dainty.
It wont be a harsh font, more delicate but with a bold colour and capitals to stand
out.
33. BREAKDOWN OF PRODCUTION
• Photography- For my photography, I plan to take my photos in my spare time as
well as booking the studio for Friday the 8th of December at 1:10-2:40. This is
because I’d like a variety of my backgrounds and I’m still not sure what will look
best for my outcome and what will suit my theme better, however I want it to still
look professional. I will be uploading my photographs and editing them on an A4
lay out on photoshop. I am aiming to take at the most 20 photographs so I have
as many as possible to pick from, and I have lots of different make up looks to try
out so will need a variety. Next week I will be starting up my website on WIX as I
found it was the best website and the most detailed.
