Callum Harrison conducted a survey to understand what type of horror/thriller films people prefer. The survey found that slasher and psychological films were the most popular subgenres. Respondents also preferred films with isolated or domestic settings, mysteries, chases, and serial killers as antagonists. Harrison concluded that the survey provided useful insights into audience preferences around storylines, characters, settings, suspense, and thrills that will help design an effective horror film trailer.

Primary Research Analysis
For my research I created a questionnaire on Survey Monkey to find out what type of Horror/Thriller
films people enjoy the most. The information I gathered gave me an understanding of what people

The first question I asked was to
find out if people did in fact
enjoy the Genre I was hoping to
use for my Trailer. From the
results I have found that most
people do enjoy the genre.
The second question that I asked
was ‘What is your favourite Sub
Genre of Horror’ this was one of
the key questions I needed people
to answer as it would define what
type of sub-genre I would be using
for my horror trailer. From the list
Slasher and psychological were the
most popular.

The next question was about the
actual film and what people would
expect to see in it. I found that most
people would expect to see a good
story.
This question was about the
locations of this genre and which
type of location people prefer. The
results show that people like isolated
places the most as well as a domestic
setting such as a characters home.

This question was regarding people’s
favourite aspects in the genre. The
results show that 76% of people
enjoy the mystery the most followed
by the chase. I think these two thing
would be fairly easy to use
considering the genre of the film
trailer.
The final question that I asked was
about the antagonist of the film. I
wanted to know which type of ‘Bad
Guy’ people enjoy the most. From
the survey I found that a serial killer
was the Antagonist that people
enjoyed the most.

I have found creating a survey helped me with deciding what type of film trailer I will be creating.
The different questions gave me an insight into what people enjoy about the horror/thriller genre
and this will help me with creating my final trailer. The range of questions I asked gave me a larger
understanding on the genre itself as well as people’s expectations from my trailer. Looking through
the results of the survey the main things I need to consider are: the storyline, the characters and the
setting.I also need to try and create suspense and thrills throughout the trailer. The survey gave me
a clearer understanding of what I need to create and what my audience want to see.
