This document defines and provides examples of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources provide first-hand accounts or direct evidence about an event through things like diaries, interviews, photographs, and audio/video recordings. Secondary sources are created later by someone not directly involved and include textbooks, encyclopedias, journal articles, and interpretive works based on primary sources. The key difference is that primary sources provide direct evidence from someone present, while secondary sources analyze and interpret events second-hand.
