PLASTIC RECYCLING
“It is a process of recovering scraps or
waste plastic and reprocessing the
material into useful products.”
Since plastic is non-biodegradable,
recycling it is a part of global efforts to
reduce plastic in the waste stream,
especially eight million metric tones of waste
plastic that enter the Earth’s ocean every
year.

 HDPE High density polyethylene
 PVC Polyvinyl chloride
 LDPE Low density polyethylene
 PP Polypropylene
 PS Polystyrene
 Others any other type of plastic

WHY WE RECYCLE PLASTIC?
WHY WE RECYCLE PLASTIC
?
 Conservation of non-renewable fossil fuels - Plastic
production uses 8% of the world's oil production.
 Reduced consumption of energy.
 Reduced amounts of solid waste going to landfill.
 Reduced emissions of carbon-dioxide (CO2), nitrogen-oxide
(NO) and sulphur-dioxide (SO2).

Primary Recycling
Secondary Recycling
Tertiary Recycling
Quaternary Recycling
 Primary recycling
Mechanical reprocessing into a product with
equivalent properties. Primary recycling is often
referred to as closed-loop recycling,
 Secondary recycling
Mechanical reprocessing into products requiring
lower properties. Secondary recycling is often
referred to downgrading.
 Tertiary recycling
Recovery of chemical constituents. Tertiary recycling is
either described as chemical or feedstock recycling and
applies when the polymer is de-polymerized to its
chemical constituents
 Quaternary recycling
Recovery of energy. Quaternary recycling is energy
recovery, energy from waste or valorization.
PERCENTAGE THAT CAN BE RECYCLED
 About 7% of all household waste is plastic.
 Annually, 3 million tonnes of plastic rubbish are produced.
 57% of litter found on beaches is plastic.
 In 2001 only 7% of all plastic was recycled.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON RECYCLED
PLASTICS?
1) Polyethylene Terephthalate
2) High Density Polyethylene
3) Polyvinyl Chloride
4) Low Density Polyethylene
PROCEDURE;
 Following steps are involved in plastic recycling
procedure;
collection Sorting
shredding Cleansing
MeltingPelletizing
COLLECTION
 Plastics are available in a number of forms e.g. jars,
bottles plastic bags etc.
 Tons and tons of scrap plastic are collected and sent to a
collecting yard.
 Packed and transported to plastic processing plant.
SORTING
 Sorting of the different plastic items by their resin content
and color.
 This process is also done to ensure all contaminates are
eliminated.
 Specially designed machines that help in sorting of the
plastics according to their resin content.
SHREDDING
 Now, cut the plastics into tiny chunks or pieces.
 The plastic bottles and containers are then ground and
cut into tiny pieces or flakes.
 The heavier and lighter plastic flakes are separated
using a specially designed machine.
CLEANSING
 The flakes or chunks are washed with detergents.
 Remove the remaining contamination.
 The clean flakes are passed through specialized
equipment that further separates the plastic resin types.
 The plastic flakes are then subjected to moderate heat to
dry.
MELTING
 The dry flakes are melted down.
 They can be melted down and molded into a new shape
or they are melted down and processed into granules.
 The melting process is done under regulated
temperatures.
 There is specialized equipment designed to melt down
plastic without destroying them.
MAKING OF PELLETS
 The plastic pieces are then compressed into tiny pellets
known as Nurdles.
 The plastic pellets are ready for reuse or be redesigned into
new plastic products.
 It is in this pellet form that plastics are transported to plastic
manufacturing companies
ADVANTAGES
 Polyethene jackets are being made by
plastic bottles.
 Reduces Landfill Problems
 Consumes Less Energy
 Encourages a Sustainable Lifestyle among
People
 Reduces Environmental Problems
 business opportunity.
 Innovative applications.
 Reduces plastic pollution.
DISADVANTAGES
 May not be economical to recycle small quantities
of plastics.
 Training of waste generators will be required, so
they can separate the wastes properly.

PLASTIC RECYCLING “It is a process of recovering scraps or waste plastic and reprocessing the material into useful products.” Since plastic is non-biodegradable, recycling it is a part of global efforts to reduce plastic in the waste stream, especially eight million metric tones of waste plastic that enter the Earth’s ocean every year.

  • 6. WHY WE RECYCLE PLASTIC?

WHY WE RECYCLE PLASTIC ?  Conservation of non-renewable fossil fuels - Plastic production uses 8% of the world's oil production.  Reduced consumption of energy.  Reduced amounts of solid waste going to landfill.  Reduced emissions of carbon-dioxide (CO2), nitrogen-oxide (NO) and sulphur-dioxide (SO2).

  • 9.  Primary recycling Mechanical reprocessing into a product with equivalent properties. Primary recycling is often referred to as closed-loop recycling,  Secondary recycling Mechanical reprocessing into products requiring lower properties. Secondary recycling is often referred to downgrading.
  • 10.  Tertiary recycling Recovery of chemical constituents. Tertiary recycling is either described as chemical or feedstock recycling and applies when the polymer is de-polymerized to its chemical constituents  Quaternary recycling Recovery of energy. Quaternary recycling is energy recovery, energy from waste or valorization.
  • 11. PERCENTAGE THAT CAN BE RECYCLED  About 7% of all household waste is plastic.  Annually, 3 million tonnes of plastic rubbish are produced.  57% of litter found on beaches is plastic.  In 2001 only 7% of all plastic was recycled.

  • 14. PROCEDURE;  Following steps are involved in plastic recycling procedure; collection Sorting shredding Cleansing MeltingPelletizing
  • 15. COLLECTION  Plastics are available in a number of forms e.g. jars, bottles plastic bags etc.  Tons and tons of scrap plastic are collected and sent to a collecting yard.  Packed and transported to plastic processing plant.

  • 17. SORTING  Sorting of the different plastic items by their resin content and color.  This process is also done to ensure all contaminates are eliminated.  Specially designed machines that help in sorting of the plastics according to their resin content.
  • 18. SHREDDING  Now, cut the plastics into tiny chunks or pieces.  The plastic bottles and containers are then ground and cut into tiny pieces or flakes.  The heavier and lighter plastic flakes are separated using a specially designed machine.
  • 19. CLEANSING  The flakes or chunks are washed with detergents.  Remove the remaining contamination.  The clean flakes are passed through specialized equipment that further separates the plastic resin types.  The plastic flakes are then subjected to moderate heat to dry.
  • 20. MELTING  The dry flakes are melted down.  They can be melted down and molded into a new shape or they are melted down and processed into granules.  The melting process is done under regulated temperatures.  There is specialized equipment designed to melt down plastic without destroying them.
  • 21. MAKING OF PELLETS  The plastic pieces are then compressed into tiny pellets known as Nurdles.  The plastic pellets are ready for reuse or be redesigned into new plastic products.  It is in this pellet form that plastics are transported to plastic manufacturing companies
  • 22. ADVANTAGES  Polyethene jackets are being made by plastic bottles.  Reduces Landfill Problems  Consumes Less Energy  Encourages a Sustainable Lifestyle among People  Reduces Environmental Problems  business opportunity.  Innovative applications.  Reduces plastic pollution.
  • 23. DISADVANTAGES  May not be economical to recycle small quantities of plastics.  Training of waste generators will be required, so they can separate the wastes properly.
