What is an Operating System?

A program that acts as an intermediary between a user
of a computer and the computer hardware.
Operating system goals:
Use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.

Multitasking environments must be careful to use most recent
value, no matter where it is stored in the storage hierarchy

Multiprocessor environment must provide cache coherency in
hardware such that all CPUs have the most recent value in their
cache

Operating System Structure
 Multiprogramming needed for efficiency
 Single user cannot keep CPU and I/O devices busy at all times
 Multiprogramming organizes jobs (code and data) so CPU always
has one to execute
 A subset of total jobs in system is kept in memory
 One job selected and run via job scheduling
 When it has to wait (for I/O for example), OS switches to another
job
 Timesharing (multitasking) is logical extension in which CPU
switches jobs so frequently that users can interact with each job while
it is running, creating interactive computing
 Response time should be < 1 second
 Each user has at least one program executing in memory process
 If several jobs ready to run at the same time  CPU scheduling
 If processes don’t fit in memory, swapping moves them in and
out to run
 Virtual memory allows execution of processes not completely in
memory

Operating-System Operations
Interrupt driven by hardware
Software error or request creates exception or trap
 Division by zero, request for operating system service
Other process problems include infinite loop, processes
modifying each other or the operating system
Dual-mode operation allows OS to protect itself and
other system components
 User mode and kernel mode
 Mode bit provided by hardware
 Provides ability to distinguish when system is running user code or
kernel code
 Some instructions designated as privileged, only executable in
kernel mode
 System call changes mode to kernel, return from call resets it to
user

Process Management
 A process is a program in execution. It is a unit of work within the
system. Program is a passive entity, process is an active entity.
 Process needs resources to accomplish its task
 CPU, memory, I/O, files
 Initialization data
 Process termination requires reclaim of any reusable resources
 Single-threaded process has one program counter specifying
location of next instruction to execute
 Process executes instructions sequentially, one at a time, until
completion
 Multi-threaded process has one program counter per thread
 Typically system has many processes, some user, some operating
system running concurrently on one or more CPUs
 Concurrency by multiplexing the CPUs among the processes /
threads

Process Management Activities
The operating system is responsible for the following
activities in connection with process management:
Creating and deleting both user and system processes
Suspending and resuming processes
Providing mechanisms for process synchronization
Providing mechanisms for process communication
Providing mechanisms for deadlock handling


Memory Management
All data in memory before and after processing
All instructions in memory in order to execute
Memory management determines what is in memory
when
 Optimizing CPU utilization and computer response to users
Memory management activities
 Keeping track of which parts of memory are currently being
used and by whom
 Deciding which processes (or parts thereof) and data to
move into and out of memory
 Allocating and deallocating memory space as needed

Storage Management
OS provides uniform, logical view of information storage
 Abstracts physical properties to logical storage unit - file
 Each medium is controlled by device (i.e., disk drive, tape
drive)
 Varying properties include access speed, capacity, data-transfer
rate, access method (sequential or random)
File-System management
 Files usually organized into directories
 Access control on most systems to determine who can access
what
 OS activities include
 Creating and deleting files and directories
 Primitives to manipulate files and dirs
 Mapping files onto secondary storage
 Backup files onto stable (non-volatile) storage media


Protection and Security
Protection – any mechanism for controlling access of processes
or users to resources defined by the OS
Security – defense of the system against internal and external
attacks
 Huge range, including denial-of-service, worms, viruses, identity
theft, theft of service
Systems generally first distinguish among users, to determine
who can do what
 User identities (user IDs, security IDs) include name and
associated number, one per user
 User ID then associated with all files, processes of that user to
determine access control
 Group identifier (group ID) allows set of users to be defined and
controls managed, then also associated with each process, file
 Privilege escalation allows user to change to effective ID with
more rights

PCs connected to a network, terminals attached to mainframe or
minicomputers providing batch and timesharing
 Now portals allowing networked and remote systems access to same
resources

Client-Server Computing
Dumb terminals supplanted by smart PCs
Many systems now servers, responding to requests generated by
clients
 Compute-server provides an interface to client to request
services (i.e. database)
 File-server provides interface for clients to store and retrieve
files


Peer-to-Peer Computing
Another model of distributed system
P2P does not distinguish clients and servers
Instead all nodes are considered peers
May each act as client, server or both
Node must join P2P network
 Registers its service with central lookup service on network,
or
 Broadcast request for service and respond to requests for
service via discovery protocol
Examples include Napster and Gnutella


Several jobs are kept in main memory at the same time, and the
CPU is multiplexed among them.


OS Features Needed for Multiprogramming

I/O routine supplied by the system.
Memory management – the system must
allocate the memory to several jobs.
CPU scheduling – the system must choose
among several jobs ready to run.
Allocation of devices.


Distributed Systems
Distribute the computation among several
physical processors.
Loosely coupled system – each processor has its
own local memory; processors communicate with
one another through various communications
lines, such as high-speed buses or telephone
lines.
Advantages of distributed systems.

Time-Sharing Systems–Interactive Computing

The CPU is multiplexed among several jobs that
are kept in memory and on disk (the CPU is
allocated to a job only if the job is in memory).
A job swapped in and out of memory to the disk.
On-line communication between the user and
the system is provided; when the operating
system finishes the execution of one command, it
seeks the next “control statement” from the user’s
keyboard.
On-line system must be available for users to
access data and code.


Real-Time Systems
Often used as a control device in a dedicated
application such as controlling scientific
experiments, medical imaging systems,
industrial control systems, and some display
systems.
Well-defined fixed-time constraints.
Real-Time systems may be either hard or soft
real-time.


Real-Time Systems (Cont.)
Hard real-time:
 Secondary storage limited or absent, data stored in
short term memory, or read-only memory (ROM)
 Conflicts with time-sharing systems, not supported
by general-purpose operating systems.

Soft real-time
 Limited utility in industrial control of robotics
 Useful in applications (multimedia, virtual reality)
requiring advanced operating-system features.

Process Concept
An operating system executes a variety of
programs:
 Batch system – jobs
 Time-shared systems – user programs or tasks
Process – a program in execution;
process execution must progress in sequential
fashion.
A process includes:
 program counter
 stack
 data section


Process State
As a process executes, it changes state
 new: The process is being created.
 running: Instructions are being executed.
 waiting: The process is waiting for some event to
occur.
 ready: The process is waiting to be assigned to a
process.
 terminated: The process has finished execution.

Process Scheduling Queues
Job queue – set of all processes in the system.
Ready queue – set of all processes residing in main
memory, ready and waiting to execute.

How are links established?
Can a link be associated with more than two
processes?
How many links can there be between every pair of
communicating processes?
What is the capacity of a link?
Is the size of a message that the link can

Direct Communication
Processes must name each other explicitly:
send (P, message) – send a message to process P
receive(Q, message) – receive a message from process

Properties of communication link
Links are established automatically.
A link is associated with exactly one pair of
communicating processes.
Between each pair there exists exactly one link.
The link may be unidirectional, but is usually bi-
directional.

Indirect Communication
Messages are directed and received from
mailboxes (also referred to as ports).
 Each mailbox has a unique id.
 Processes can communicate only if they share a
mailbox.
Properties of communication link
 Link established only if processes share a common
mailbox
 A link may be associated with many processes.
 Each pair of processes may share several
communication links.
 Link may be unidirectional or bi-directional.

Basic Concepts
Maximum CPU utilization obtained with
multiprogramming
CPU–I/O Burst Cycle – Process execution consists of
a cycle of CPU execution and I/O wait.
CPU burst distribution


CPU Scheduler
Selects from among the processes in memory that are
ready to execute, and allocates the CPU to one of them.
CPU scheduling decisions may take place when a process:
1. Switches from running to waiting state.
2. Switches from running to ready state.
3. Switches from waiting to ready.
4.Terminates.
Scheduling under 1 and 4 is nonpreemptive.
All other scheduling is preemptive.


Dispatcher
Dispatcher module gives control of the CPU to the
process selected by the short-term scheduler; this
involves:
switching context
switching to user mode
jumping to the proper location in the user program to
restart that program
Dispatch latency – time it takes for the dispatcher to
stop one process and start another running.


Scheduling Criteria
CPU utilization – keep the CPU as busy as
possible
Throughput – # of processes that complete their
execution per time unit
Turnaround time – amount of time to execute a
particular process
Waiting time – amount of time a process has
been waiting in the ready queue
Response time – amount of time it takes from
when a request was submitted until the first
response is produced, not output (for time-
sharing environment)

Convoy effect short process behind long process

Shortest-Job-First (SJR) Scheduling
Associate with each process the length of its next CPU
burst. Use these lengths to schedule the process with the
shortest time.
Two schemes:
 nonpreemptive – once CPU given to the process it cannot be
preempted until completes its CPU burst.
 preemptive – if a new process arrives with CPU burst length
less than remaining time of current executing process,
preempt. This scheme is know as the
Shortest-Remaining-Time-First (SRTF).
SJF is optimal – gives minimum average waiting time for a
given set of processes.

Determining Length of Next CPU Burst
Can only estimate the length.
Can be done by using the length of previous CPU
bursts, using exponential averaging.
1. tn = actual lenght of nthCPU burst
2. τ n +1 = predicted value for the next CPU burst
3. α , 0 ≤ α ≤ 1

Priority Scheduling
A priority number (integer) is associated with each
process
The CPU is allocated to the process with the highest
priority (smallest integer ≡ highest priority).
 Preemptive
 nonpreemptive
SJF is a priority scheduling where priority is the predicted
next CPU burst time.
Problem ≡ Starvation – low priority processes may never
execute.
Solution ≡ Aging – as time progresses increase the priority
of the process.

Round Robin (RR)
Each process gets a small unit of CPU time (time
quantum), usually 10-100 milliseconds. After this time has
elapsed, the process is preempted and added to the end of
the ready queue.
If there are n processes in the ready queue and the time
quantum is q, then each process gets 1/n of the CPU time
in chunks of at most q time units at once. No process
waits more than (n-1)q time units.
Performance
 q large ⇒ FIFO
 q small ⇒ q must be large with respect to context switch,
otherwise overhead is too high.

Base and Limit Registers
A pair of base and limit registers define the
logical address space


Binding of Instructions and Data to Memory
Address binding of instructions and data to memory
addresses can happen at three different stages
 Compile time: If memory location known a priori,
absolute code can be generated; must recompile code
if starting location changes
 Load time: Must generate relocatable code if
memory location is not known at compile time
 Execution time: Binding delayed until run time if the
process can be moved during its execution from one
memory segment to another. Need hardware support
for address maps (e.g., base and limit registers)


Logical vs. Physical Address Space
The concept of a logical address space that is
bound to a separate physical address space is
central to proper memory management
 Logical address – generated by the CPU; also
referred to as virtual address
 Physical address – address seen by the memory
unit
Logical and physical addresses are the same in
compile-time and load-time address-binding
schemes; logical (virtual) and physical addresses
differ in execution-time address-binding scheme


Memory-Management Unit (MMU)
Hardware device that maps virtual to physical
address

In MMU scheme, the value in the relocation
register is added to every address generated by
a user process at the time it is sent to memory

The user program deals with logical addresses;
it never sees the real physical addresses


Dynamic Loading
Routine is not loaded until it is called
Better memory-space utilization; unused
routine is never loaded
Useful when large amounts of code are needed
to handle infrequently occurring cases
No special support from the operating system is
required implemented through program design


Dynamic Linking
Linking postponed until execution time
Small piece of code, stub, used to locate the
appropriate memory-resident library routine
Stub replaces itself with the address of the
routine, and executes the routine
Operating system needed to check if routine is
in processes’ memory address
Dynamic linking is particularly useful for
libraries
System also known as shared libraries


Swapping
 A process can be swapped temporarily out of memory to a backing store, and
then brought back into memory for continued execution

 Backing store – fast disk large enough to accommodate copies of all memory
images for all users; must provide direct access to these memory images

 Roll out, roll in – swapping variant used for priority-based scheduling
algorithms; lower-priority process is swapped out so higher-priority process
can be loaded and executed

 Major part of swap time is transfer time; total transfer time is directly
proportional to the amount of memory swapped

 Modified versions of swapping are found on many systems (i.e., UNIX, Linux,
and Windows)
 System maintains a ready queue of ready-to-run processes which have
memory images on disk

Dynamic Storage-Allocation Problem
How to satisfy a request of size n from a list of free holes
First-fit: Allocate the first hole that is big enough
Best-fit: Allocate the smallest hole that is big
enough; must search entire list, unless ordered by
size
 Produces the smallest leftover hole
Worst-fit: Allocate the largest hole; must also
search entire list
 Produces the largest leftover hole

First-fit and best-fit better than worst-fit in terms of
speed and storage utilization


Paging
 Logical address space of a process can be noncontiguous;
process is allocated physical memory whenever the latter
is available
 Divide physical memory into fixed-sized blocks called
frames (size is power of 2, between 512 bytes and 8,192
bytes)
 Divide logical memory into blocks of same size called
pages
 Keep track of all free frames
 To run a program of size n pages, need to find n free
frames and load program
 Set up a page table to translate logical to physical
addresses
 Internal fragmentation

Implementation of Page Table
 Page table is kept in main memory
 Page-table base register (PTBR) points to the page
table
 Page-table length register (PRLR) indicates size of
the page table
 In this scheme every data/instruction access requires
two memory accesses. One for the page table and one
for the data/instruction.
 The two memory access problem can be solved by the
use of a special fast-lookup hardware cache called
associative memory or translation look-aside
buffers (TLBs)
 Some TLBs store address-space identifiers (ASIDs) in
each TLB entry – uniquely identifies each process to
provide address-space protection for that process

Copy-on-Write (COW) allows both parent and child
processes to initially share the same pages in memory

If either process modifies a shared page, only then is

Prevent over-allocation of memory by modifying

Basic Page Replacement
1. Find the location of the desired page on disk

2. Find a free frame:
- If there is a free frame, use it
- If there is no free frame, use a page
replacement algorithm to select a victim
frame

3. Read the desired page into the (newly) free
