Film piracy began in 1998 with cam recordings uploaded online before official releases. The earliest and most common types of pirated films are cam, telesync, and screener recordings. Film piracy costs the global film industry an estimated £1.5 billion annually in lost revenue and has contributed to the loss of over 30,000 jobs in the British film industry. While piracy provides free and easy access to films for consumers, it often results in lower quality copies and illegally distributing or selling pirated content can result in fines or imprisonment.
