What is piracy?
• The name given to illegal copying and selling
of DVD’s and CD’s.
• According to nidirect.gov.uk the money made
from pirated copies is then used by criminals
to fund the sales of drugs and guns.
The negatives in the film industry
• Billions of dollars every year are lost due to
Piracy online.
• Can lead to fewer high budget movies and less
releases.
• It could slow down the process of the
production stage as the profits made may not
be as expected
• Producers may expect to experience
shrinkage and lower salaries.
Positives in film industry
• Can give a movie bigger recognition. It can
also lead to people that have watched the
pirate copy and enjoyed it to go and view it in
the cinema.
• Can be recommended.
The negatives in consumerism
• Bad quality videos if film has just come out in
cinema, usually filmed on a handheld camera
at the back of the cinema.
• Sellers of pirated copies have no guarantee of
a good copy, therefore no refunds or returns if
quality is not as expected.
The positives of consumerism
• Pay usually half the price of a cinema ticket.
• Instant downloads from torrents-instantly
watch films.
• Once DVD versions are available, the quality
automatically increases. Usually as good as
the DVD.
• On the go
• Movie sites like Netflix, Blinkbox and Lovefilm
are all examples of the film industry trying to
stabilize the piracy, for £6 a month (the price
of one cinema ticket) the consumer can watch
100’s newly released and old films. As well as
offering a wide selection of UK AND US hit TV
series.
