SOA, service-oriented architectures, burst on the scene in the new millennium as the latest technology to support application growth. In concert with the Web, SOA ushered in new paradigms for structuring enterprise applications.
At the Forward Internet Group in London, we are implementing SOA in unusual ways. Rather than a few, businessrelated services being implemented per the original vision, we have developed systems made of myriads of very small, usually shortlived services.
In this workshop, we will start by exploring the evolution of SOA implementations by the speaker. In particular, lessons learned from each implementation will be discussed, and reapplication of these lessons on the next implementation. Challenges (and even failures) will be explicitly identified.
We will arrive at a model of the current systems: An environment of very small services that are loosely coupled into a complex system. We explore the demise of acceptance tests in this complex environment, and the clever replacement of business metrics in their stead.
Finally, we will conclude with the surprising programmer development process impacts of this architecture. Indeed, bedrock principles of Agile have been rendered unnecessary, something that equally surprised us. (Presented at Agile India 2013)

You'll learn how you can use Canvas and SVG graphics for animation, graphics, and interactivity, how you can optimize HTML5's new-media formats and deliver them effectively to desktop and mobile devices, and how you can use geolocation in applications and Web courses.
Jonas Lidman and I ran this workshop with Hyper Island and Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, November 2012. It is very slightly adapted from the workshop Jonas and Mike Arauz have done for the past 2 years. You guys deserve the credit!

We can see great, early examples of branded entertainment from progressive brands including BMW, Old Spice, Red Bull, and Dos Equis. Now that each individual receives over 15,000 advertising messages in a single day, companies need to think of new ways to stand out from all of that clutter. Interrupting what consumers want to watch the way that a traditional TV commercial does is an old methodology that is becoming less and less effective. It is also creating a less ideal user experience.
Effectively embedding your brands' message into what consumers want to see is a much more effective way to break through the clutter. This trend will become much more mainstream as it is often much more effective.

Technically, the English term “counterfeiting” only refers to specific cases of trademark infringement. However, in practice, the term is allowed to encompass any making of a product which so closely imitates the appearance of the product of another as to mislead a consumer that it is the product of another. Hence, it may also include the unauthorised production and distribution of a product that is protected by other intellectual property rights, such as copyright and neighbouring rights.

The major U.S motion picture studios lost $6.1 billion in 2005 to piracy worldwide. 80 percent of those losses resulted from piracy overseas, 20 percent from piracy in the U.S. , 38 percent from internet piracy. Piracy rates are highest in China (90 percent), Russia (79 percent) and Thailand (79 percent). The estimate for the US market is 7%. China and Russia have the highest piracy rates of all countries surveyed – 90 percent and 79 percent, respectively. The study indicates that the U.S. motion picture dollar losses in those markets are smaller than losses in Mexico and the UK. Why? • The U.S. motion picture industry’s access to China is severely limited. China limits the number of foreign films allowed in theaters each year to 20 , and imposes a number of restrictions on the distribution of home video products . By contrast, pirates operate unfettered and outside the law. • Mexico and the UK are free markets resulting in higher revenue for the U.S. motion picture industry
The typical worldwide pirate is 16-24 years old, male and lives in an urban area. The 16-24 age group is particularly high in the category of internet piracy, representing 58 percent of illegal downloaders across the 22 directly researched countries*. It is even higher in the US, where the same age range represents 71 percent of downloaders. 44 percent of MPA company losses in the U.S. are attributable to college students. ------------------------------- LEK is an international strategy consulting firm. The study was conducted over 18 months. LEK surveyed 20,600 movie consumers in 22 countries using focus groups and telephone, internet and in-person interviews. Those surveyed were movie watchers. Those who have dropped out of the market for movies were not included in the study. Data from the 22 directly research countries was extrapolated to 42 additional countries using a regression model developed in conjunction with UCLA and based on country-specific characteristics to complete the worldwide piracy picture.
