Presentation supporting my application to Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Landscape Planning (RUHR-UNIVERSITÄT BOCHUM))
1. 1.What is your motivation to apply for the advertised postdoc position at Ruhr University
Bochum, the Institute of Geography, and in the PLACES working group?
Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Landscape Planning or Environmental Planning
Institute of Geography | Planning Metropolitan Landscapes (PLACES)
Candidate: Eduardo Oliveira, 23/03/2020
• Location-competitive advantage: university-industry-government-public-environment interactions;
• Working philosophy: across disciplines; supporting decision-making; scientific and societal relevance;
• Career opportunities: Supporting EC researchers e.g. RUB Research School; Professorship path.
• SDGoals: Research across the three dimensions of sustainability supporting operationalization of SDG;
• Spatial focus: advancing environmental governance theories in contemporary urbanized territories;
• Forward looking: exiting knowledge to continue researching prime issues e.g. climate change mitigation.
• Nexus thinking: advancing theories on integration of ecosystems services in spatial planning;
• Methods: Advancing methods supporting co-creation or co-production of strategies for sustainability;
• Geographical scope: opportunity to expand research beyond European urban regions e.g. Southeast Asia.
2. 2. What are, in your view, major knowledge gaps in the field of landscape and environmental
planning?

Landscape planning Environmental planning
• Theoretical conceptualization of performance-
based approaches in environmental planning
(Baker et al, 2006)
• Developing hypothesis on the
effectiveness of performance standards in
environmental planning but securing
urban quality for all including the more
vulnerable (Kendig, 2019; Rudolf et al,
2018).
• Theoretical advancements on the cross-
fertilization between transformative governance
(Chaffin et al, 2016) and environmental planning.
• Transdisciplinary research effort should be initiated
to support landscape plan-making – because
sustainability challenges demand effective science-
policy interfaces (Acuto et al, 2018).
• Theoretical conceptualization of landscape planning
as a governance challenge in increasing mobile
societies – because place attachment boosts
environmental stewardship but societies are global
and forced migration patterns (Kienast et al, 2018).
• Novel mechanisms supporting public involvement
in protecting and designing sustainable landscapes –
need place-based planning (von Haaren et al, 2019).
3. 3. Which research aims would you find exciting to pursue within the next three years, and which
novel methods would you seek to develop and apply?

• Assessing the role of strategic spatial plans in supporting
landscape conservation, halt biodiversity loss and
sustainable access to ES – improving plan-making
processes (Hersperger et al, 2020).
• Advancing theoretical conceptualization of trans-scalar
landscape planning – overcoming issues of scale (Albert
et al, 2020; Fürst et al 2017).
• Assessing relationships between memorial value of
landscape amenities and conservation narratives –
people protect if emotionally attached (Blicharska et al,
2014).
• Assessing relationships between the value of landscape
amenities in a firm’s reputation - are firms willing to pay
to preserve that landscapes they profit from? –
voluntary sustainability standards (Lambin et al, 2018).
• Feedback workshops involving policy makers, experts
and citizens (Zaehringer et al. 2018);
• Participatory scenario planning (Allington et al., 2018)
and vision building for strategic-design of landscapes
(Cerreta et al. 2010);
• Ecological planning method (Steiner, 2008);
• Sustainability Impact Assessment of landscape plans
and policies (Helming et al, 2008; Ewert et al, 2009;
Reidsma et al, 2012);
• People-/user-generated data for from knowledge – to –
strategies – to – action plans (Kaußen, 2018)
