3. Sunflowers are
• The scientific name of sunflower is Helianthus annus.
• The genus name for sunflower is derived from the Greek helios,
meaning ‘sun’ and anthos, meaning 'flower'.
• The sunflower is an annual oilseed crop .
• The sunflower is a native crop of the southern USA and Mexico.
• The sunflower crop area has been increasing at a rate of 2.7% in
the past five years.
• Sunflowers are such a special plant, that every part of the plant
can be used - the seed, flower, leaf, stem all have several uses.
7. Importance of sunflower cultivation in Bangladesh
The crop has important agronomic characteristics, such as
resistance to drought and wide adaptability to various
environmental conditions.
It is widely adaptable and more drought tolerant than most
other crops as sunflower crop has a deep root system.
Several findings suggest that sunflowers should become
more efficient to convert CO2 into carbohydrates as the air's
CO2 content will increase in the future.
Cultivation of sunflower may be suitable because of it's high
yield as well as it's extensive adaptability.
8. • Integrated fertilizer management is a practice where
organic and inorganic (chemical) fertilizers are applied to
soil so that crop growth is enhanced and we can get good
yield with quality product .
• Proper application of mineral and organic fertilizer is very
beneficial not only for obtaining an optimum yield but also
to maintain soil fertility.
• Integrated fertilizer management has to be considered as an
integral part of sustainable agricultural system.
Integrated Fertilizer Management
9. Integrated Fertilizer Management for
Sunflower
• Integrated use of chemical and organic fertilizers can
help in sustainable, economically and environmentally
sound nutrient management of soil .
• The recycling of wastes through using organic fertilizers
will reduce the problems of disposal of organic wastes.
• Integrated fertilizer management can be a suitable
option to grow sunflower.
• Different experiments showed that plant height, head
diameter, 100-seed weight of sunflower were
significantly influenced by integrated mineral and
organic fertilization.
10. Importance of Vermicompost in Sunflower
Cultivation
• Vermicompost is a rich source of macronutrients and
micronutrients.
• The application of vermicompost in the field enhances
the quality of soils by increasing microbial activity.
• Different investigations provide evidences that
application of vermicompost is capable of increasing the
yield of sunflower.
11. Importance of Biogas Slurry in
Sunflower Cultivation
The biogas slurry, a by-product of biogas
production , is a good source of nutrients,
which can improve crop yield and soil
properties.
Different field experiments were performed
with an objective to evaluate the effect of
vermicompost and biogas slurry on various
parameters of sunflower. Application of only
biogas slurry or vermicompost enhanced the
yield of sunflower but the highest yield was
recorded in combined treatment of the both.
12. • The cow dung consists of nitrogen, potassium, sulphur
and traces of phosphorus.
• The presence of beneficial bacteria in cow dung play a
significant role in the seed establishment.
• Different experimental results showed that the sunflower
was positively affected by cow dung application,
increasing the production and the water use efficiency.
• The superior performance of cow dung on sunflower may
be due to it’s higher nitrogen content.
13. Importance of Trichocompost in Sunflower
Cultivation
Trichocompost is used as a good source of
trichoderma.
It helps in seedling establishment, enhancement of
plant growth.
Trichoderma reduce root rot disease incidence
caused by Sclerotinia on sunflower.
14. Remarks
• Different experiments showed that
the uptake of N, P and K by
sunflower seed was significantly
influenced by integrated fertilizer
management practices.
The lower productivity of
sunflower is mainly due to insufficient
supply of nutrients. Integrated fertilizer
management will help to obtain higher
yield of sunflower.
