What are Ornamental plants?
Ornamental plants are plants that are grown for decorative and beautification purposes in
gardens and landscape design projects, as house plants, cut flowers and specimen display.
The cultivation of ornamental plants is called floriculture, which forms a major branch of
horticulture.
In ornamental gardening, ornamental plants play the key role, these plants come in many
shapes, sizes and colors that are selected depending their climatic, landscape and gardening
requirements.
Ornamental plants Plant Name
Ornamental trees Cherry, dogwoods, Japanese maple, pear
Ornamental shrubs Barberry, camellia
Ornamental flowering plants Roses, orchids
Ornamental grasses: Meadow foxtail, bamboo, fountain grass
Ornamental herbs Mint and marigold.
Cherry Camellia Orchids
Fountain Grass
Marigold
Classification of Ornamental plants:
• Ornamental Plants are generally classified into 2 types:
i. Flowering plants ii. Non-flowering plants.
• Ornamental plants are also categorized based on the life span:
i. Annual Ornamentals ii. Biennial ornamentals
Benefits of Ornamental Plants:
1. Amazing Beauty: Jasmine, Lavender, and other aromatic, ornamental flowers will both aroma
and attractive look.
2. Pleasing and calming atmosphere: Garden with ornamental conifers, pines, or palms will give
you a pleasing and calming atmosphere around us.
3. Ornamental Plants Cleans Air: Ornamental plants that effectively cleans the air are Spider plant,
golden pothos, peace lily and snake plant etc.
4. Create own ecosystem: Growing ornamental plants will help you to create an amazing
ecosystem.
5. Ornamental plants prevent soil erosion: Ornamental Trees like pines, firs, willows, etc. are good
for hillside gardens.
6. Ornamental Plants for concentration: Nature ornamental plants bounded with aroma and
beauty which believed that it will improve concentration.
7. Ornamental Plants to Reduce stress: Many people believe that growing indoor plants in offices
or homes will reduce the stress levels and refresh them will their attractive appeal and smell.
Care for Ornamental Plants
1. Best location : Ornamental plants grown indoor, outdoor anywhere. We choose site free from
plastic content, chemical free, and should free from construction materials.
2. Soil for Ornamental Plants: Ornamental plants don’t grow well with poorly drained soils,
these soils can cause plant diseases. We shouldn’t choose the clayey soil, clayey soils will
suffocate the root system and kill a plant. Most of the plants prefer well drained soil with pH
levels 6 to 7, soil should be acidic to alkaline.
3. Selection of suitable plants: Select the ornamental plants depending on the local climate and
rainfall durations. And the site should be exposed to sun/shade. Selection of plants also
depends on the soil draining capability and pH levels.
4. Temperature for ornamental plants: Ornamental plants grow well at all temperatures. Ideal
temperatures for ornamental plants is 25 to 35 degrees.
5. Fertilizers for Ornamental Plants: Ornamental plant fertilizers come in many forms
liquid concentrates, water soluble crystals, slow release fertilizers, etc. we can use any
form of fertilizer for ornamental plants. Fertilizers differ in nutrient content and release
duration. The type of fertilizer should be based not only on its cost, but also on the types
of ornamental plants and nutrient content of the soil, and the type of desire growth of the
plants.
 Liquid or water-soluble fertilizers are preferred for annual, herbaceous perennials.
 For woody ornamentals, use granular slow release fertilizers.
 The most general purpose should have NPK levels in the ration of 10-10-10 or 12-4-8.
Using organic fertilizers is also a good option.
 Best Organic fertilizer for ornamental plants are bone meal, cottonseed meal and
animal manures.
 Timing of Fertilize
6. Watering Requirements for Ornamental Plants: Most of the ornamental plants need
medium watering requirements. Some plants like annuals, herbaceous perennials, azaleas
and rhododendron need more water than other ornamental plants. The water
requirements of the plants depend on the type of ornamental plants, soil and moisture
levels of the soil and the climate. The best time to water ornamental plants is at night or
in the early morning. As much as 30 percent of the water applied during midday can be
evaporated due to heat.
7. Mulching for Ornamental Plants: Mulching helps to hold the moisture and prevents
weed growth. Mulching insulates the roots of plants from temperature fluctuations during
the summer and winter. The best mulch used for ornamental plants is organic, fine-
textured mulching like pine straw, pine bark mini-nuggets, hardwood chips and straws.
Dried leaves are also best natural mulch. One can use inorganic mulches like rock, gravel
and marble and these inorganic mulches are the best soil insulators, and they absorb heat
in the soil and absorbs water from the plants.
8. Organic Matter: Adding organic matter like leaf mold, natural compost, peat, compost,
or rich garden soil.
9. Humidity: The most indoor plants love humidity. Normal ornamental plants need 50
percent or higher humidity and even can thrive at 30 to 40 percent of humidity in the air. If
the air becomes dry and when the leaves unable to absorb enough water their leaves turn
pale and yellow.
10. Pruning: Ornamental plants in landscapes are pruned for many reasons. We usually prune
plants to achieve or maintain a certain size or form. At other times, we prune to remove old,
diseased or damaged wood in an effort to promote vigorous new growth, flowering or
fruiting. Two basic pruning techniques are used to prune ornamental plants -- heading and
thinning. Shearing is a form of heading. Pruning flowering ornamental plants should be done
at the proper time of year; otherwise flower buds might be removed. As a general rule,
pruning spring-flowering trees and shrubs soon after they bloom.
11. Light for indoor Ornamental plants: Each plant has different light requirements. Most
flowering plants, and foliage plants are sun-loving so place them near a sunny, south-facing
window. During the winter months, move all the plants closer to windows to compensate for
the decrease in light. Most plants thrive well in 12 to 16 hours of light per day. To increase
the plants one need to provide supplemental lighting provision.
12. Weed Control: Weeds in the landscape can be controlled mechanically or chemically.
For chemical control, preemergence and post-emergence herbicides are available.
Examples of pre- emergence herbicides are Dacthal, Surflan and Treflan. Commonly used
post-emergence herbicides include Roundup and Vantage.
13. Insect and Disease Management: Landscape plants are attacked by a diverse and
complex group of insects and diseases.Diagnosis of some insect and mite problems often
requires close examination of the plant.

Fertilizers for Ornamental Plants: Ornamental plant fertilizers come in many forms liquid concentrates, water soluble crystals, slow release fertilizers, etc. we can use any form of fertilizer for ornamental plants. Fertilizers differ in nutrient content and release duration. The type of fertilizer should be based not only on its cost, but also on the types of ornamental plants and nutrient content of the soil, and the type of desire growth of the plants.  Best Organic fertilizer for ornamental plants are bone meal, cottonseed meal and animal manures.  Timing of Fertilize
  • 8. 6. Watering Requirements for Ornamental Plants: Most of the ornamental plants need medium watering requirements. Some plants like annuals, herbaceous perennials, azaleas and rhododendron need more water than other ornamental plants. The water requirements of the plants depend on the type of ornamental plants, soil and moisture levels of the soil and the climate. The best time to water ornamental plants is at night or in the early morning. As much as 30 percent of the water applied during midday can be evaporated due to heat. 7. Mulching for Ornamental Plants: Mulching helps to hold the moisture and prevents weed growth. Mulching insulates the roots of plants from temperature fluctuations during the summer and winter. The best mulch used for ornamental plants is organic, fine- textured mulching like pine straw, pine bark mini-nuggets, hardwood chips and straws. Dried leaves are also best natural mulch. One can use inorganic mulches like rock, gravel and marble and these inorganic mulches are the best soil insulators, and they absorb heat in the soil and absorbs water from the plants. 8. Organic Matter: Adding organic matter like leaf mold, natural compost, peat, compost, or rich garden soil.
  • 9. 9. Humidity: The most indoor plants love humidity. Normal ornamental plants need 50 percent or higher humidity and even can thrive at 30 to 40 percent of humidity in the air. If the air becomes dry and when the leaves unable to absorb enough water their leaves turn pale and yellow. 10. Pruning: Ornamental plants in landscapes are pruned for many reasons. We usually prune plants to achieve or maintain a certain size or form. At other times, we prune to remove old, diseased or damaged wood in an effort to promote vigorous new growth, flowering or fruiting. Two basic pruning techniques are used to prune ornamental plants -- heading and thinning. Shearing is a form of heading. Pruning flowering ornamental plants should be done at the proper time of year; otherwise flower buds might be removed. As a general rule, pruning spring-flowering trees and shrubs soon after they bloom. 11. Light for indoor Ornamental plants: Each plant has different light requirements. Most flowering plants, and foliage plants are sun-loving so place them near a sunny, south-facing window. During the winter months, move all the plants closer to windows to compensate for the decrease in light. Most plants thrive well in 12 to 16 hours of light per day. To increase the plants one need to provide supplemental lighting provision.
  • 10. 12. Weed Control: Weeds in the landscape can be controlled mechanically or chemically. For chemical control, preemergence and post-emergence herbicides are available. Examples of pre- emergence herbicides are Dacthal, Surflan and Treflan. Commonly used post-emergence herbicides include Roundup and Vantage. 13. Insect and Disease Management: Landscape plants are attacked by a diverse and complex group of insects and diseases.Diagnosis of some insect and mite problems often requires close examination of the plant.
