How Adults Learn

Pedagogy – “the art and science of educating children.”
In the pedagogic model, teachers assume responsibility for
making decisions about what will be learned, how it will be
learned, and when it will be learned. Teachers direct learning.
Today , this teacher-focused learning has come to dominate
formal education as well as adult education.
Yet early in ancient history, great teachers such as Confucius,
Plato, and Socrates did not pursue such direct techniques.

The Calvinist model espoused the
idea that adults should control and
limit children’s learning, to keep
them innocent.
Seventh Century Schools found
indoctrination to be an effective
approach to instilling beliefs, faith,
and ritual.

Why The Pedagogic Model?

Letting learners know why it is important to learn something.
Showing learners how to direct themselves when studying information.
Relating the topic to the learner’s experiences.
People will not learn until they are ready, and motivated to learn.
Achieving readiness and motivation may require overcoming inhibitions,
behaviors and set beliefs related to learning.
Adult Learning – Key Ideas
How We Process Information
06How Adults Learn
Visual – preference for seeing what we are learning. Pictures and images help us
understand ideas and information.
Auditory – preference for hearing what we are learning. Most with this preference
learn best by listening to someone else present the information verbally. Some learn
best when they hear their own voices when receiving and processing information.
That is, they verbalize the information to themselves.
Kinesthetic – preference for receiving and processing information physically –
through touch (tactile), and through sensing/observing physical positions,
orientations and movements.

Goal-oriented learners
use education to accomplish
clear-cut objectives.
Activity-oriented learners
participate in learning activities mainly
because of the social contact and
interaction involved.
Learning-oriented learners
seek knowledge for its own sake.
What Motivates Learners

Build courses and programs that address multiple learning styles.
Relevance and immediacy are important.
Information has to be relevant to our needs.
We need to spend time learning what will make a difference now.
Present information to others on how they will best learn.

Relating the topic to the learner’s experiences. People will not learn until they are ready, and motivated to learn.   • 5. How We Process Information 06How Adults Learn Visual – preference for seeing what we are learning. Pictures and images help us understand ideas and information. Auditory – preference for hearing what we are learning. Most with this preference learn best by listening to someone else present the information verbally. Some learn best when they hear their own voices when receiving and processing information. That is, they verbalize the information to themselves. Kinesthetic – preference for receiving and processing information physically – through touch (tactile), and through sensing/observing physical positions, orientations and movements.

Activity-oriented learners participate in learning activities mainly because of the social contact and interaction involved. Learning-oriented learners seek knowledge for its own sake.
