Learning is a mental action: When information enters the brain, is manipulated, stored and used it when it’s needed. Cognitivism is a learning theory that defines learning as a semi-permanent change in mental process associations. Learning takes place through observation and sensorial experiences.
Mental activity is the primary focus or learning. Learning occurs when connections are made between old and new information in meaningful interactions. Learning is measured by how one thinks, not how one behaves. Prior knowledge plays and important role in the learning process.
This presentation discusses about two major learning theories i.e. pedagogy and andragogy. The presentation highlights the definitions, historical development, and assumptions of these theories. It also includes a comparative analysis between these theories.

Teaching Adults: What trainers need to knowDanielleHazen1
Teaching adults isn’t
like teaching children. What we learn in childhood forms the foundation of what we learn as
adults. Our life experiences can add to that, thus creating a substantial
reservoir of information.
Developing insight into how adults learn helps trainers become more
successful.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Pedagogy – “the art and science of educating children.”
In the pedagogic model, teachers assume responsibility for
making decisions about what will be learned, how it will be
learned, and when it will be learned. Teachers direct learning.
Today , this teacher-focused learning has come to dominate
formal education as well as adult education.
Yet early in ancient history, great teachers such as Confucius,
Plato, and Socrates did not pursue such direct techniques.

The Calvinist model espoused the
idea that adults should control and
limit children’s learning, to keep
them innocent.
Seventh Century Schools found
indoctrination to be an effective
approach to instilling beliefs, faith,
and ritual.
How Adults Learn
Some theories:
Why The Pedagogic Model?
4. 05How Adults Learn
Letting learners know why it is important to learn something.
Showing learners how to direct themselves when studying information.
Relating the topic to the learner’s experiences.
People will not learn until they are ready, and motivated to learn.
Achieving readiness and motivation may require overcoming inhibitions,
behaviors and set beliefs related to learning.
Adult Learning – Key Ideas
5. How We Process Information
06How Adults Learn
Visual – preference for seeing what we are learning. Pictures and images help us
understand ideas and information.
Auditory – preference for hearing what we are learning. Most with this preference
learn best by listening to someone else present the information verbally. Some learn
best when they hear their own voices when receiving and processing information.
That is, they verbalize the information to themselves.
Kinesthetic – preference for receiving and processing information physically –
through touch (tactile), and through sensing/observing physical positions,
orientations and movements.
6. 07How Adults Learn
Goal-oriented learners
use education to accomplish
clear-cut objectives.
Activity-oriented learners
participate in learning activities mainly
because of the social contact and
interaction involved.
Learning-oriented learners
seek knowledge for its own sake.
What Motivates Learners
7. 08How Adults Learn
Build courses and programs that address multiple learning styles.
Relevance and immediacy are important.
Information has to be relevant to our needs.
We need to spend time learning what will make a difference now.
Present information to others on how they will best learn.
