This document provides an overview of the annealing and pickling process at Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Limited's cold rolling division. It established India's first stainless steel plant in 1975. The cold rolling division processes coils through annealing and pickling to restore shine and remove stresses and impurities. The AP-2 line is described which can process coils from 0.4-12mm thick and 500-1270mm wide of various stainless steel grades at speeds up to 35mpm. Annealing reduces stresses from rolling while pickling using acids removes scale and oxides to produce bright, corrosion resistant coils. The training improves the presenter's technical skills and knowledge of stainless steel manufacturing processes.

Iron and steel constitute over 90% of all metal production and a similar fraction of the scrap metals market. Steel mills consume about three quarters of the scrap, and iron and steel foundries consume the remainder to produce ferrous castings.
Economic Facts of Iron & Steel Recycling
•Almost 40% of the world’s steel production is made from scrap.
•Every ton of recycled steel can help saving 1.4 ton of iron ore.
•Conversely, a steel can land-filled will take 100 years to vanish.
•Steel is the most recycled material on earth! In Luxembourg, 2,292 tons of steel packaging have been collected in 2013.
•Recycling one tonne of steel saves 1,100 kg of iron ore, 630 kg of coal, and 55 kg of limestone.
•CO2 emissions are reduced by 58% through the use of ferrous scrap.
•Recycling one tonne of steel saves 642 kWh of energy, 1.8 barrels (287 litres) of oil, 10.9 million Btu's of energy and 2.3 cubic metres of landfill space.
•Recycling steel uses 75% less energy compared to creating steel from raw materials - enough to power 18 million homes.
•Steel recycling uses 74% less energy, 90% less virgin materials and 40% less water; it also produces 76% fewer water pollutants, 86% fewer air pollutants and 97% less mining waste.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

The Hisar plant was established in 1975 when Shri O.P Jindal, envisioned a self reliant India for
meeting its stainless steel demand. Stainless steel then was no less than a luxury metal and India
was completely dependent on imports to fulfil its demand, which imports attracted duties of up to
300%. It was Shri O.P Jindal’s vision and his pioneering spirit that led to the establishment of the
Hisar plant, India’s first stainless steel manufacturing unit.
Hisar plant was integrated on a strategy of both, backward and forward integration, starting from
mining, melting, casting, hot rolling to cold rolling and other value additions Today, it is a fully
integrated Stainless Steel plant with a capacity of 800,000 TPA. It is also the world’s largest
producer of Stainless Steel strips for razor blades
it’s Specialty product division caters to the high end precision and specialty stainless steel
requirements of reputed Indian and International customers. The product range includes Slabs &
