This document discusses estimating the user base of open source software products from internet statistics. It proposes using search engine data and frequency of user search requests as an indirect metric to measure user base, since it cannot be directly measured. The first step outlined is to establish this metric of user base through search data. Current results show a clear correlation between user search and usage. Future work involves validating this approach on different internet segments and collaborating with open source projects to obtain more usage data.
