The Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium received grants to develop a virtual coaching program called AdultSuccessCoach.org to help adult learners and displaced workers at community colleges and universities. The goals are to increase student persistence through coaching and identify best practices for delivering coaching online. Challenges included engaging students and defining the coaching role. Training addressed coaching strategies and role-playing student scenarios. Different schools implemented coaching in various ways such as an orientation course. Lessons showed replicating existing programs was most effective.

The Kingston Hawks SQC was started by students to improve communication between students and the university. They created a Facebook page called the "Kingston University Business Faculty Student Forum" to give students a place to voice issues and opinions. Over time, the page grew to 300 members. Moving forward, the SQC plans to recruit new members and continue marketing the Facebook forum at events like Freshers Fair to further encourage communication and student involvement.

Smooth transition between secondary and higher education – a good practice

Portugal's ISCAP higher education institution decided to adapt a good practice from Bury College in the UK to help smooth students' transition from secondary to higher education. They created a website called "Live the Best @ ISCAP" with information on academic life, logistics, transportation, available services, and academic support. An evaluation found that students rated the website highly and it was useful, though it could be improved by adding more resources, videos of other programs, and practical information. The creators plan to disseminate and continuously improve the site to further help reduce early school leaving.

Northern Illinois University developed competency-based self-paced online workshops to introduce faculty to online teaching technologies as part of their online faculty certification process. The workshops allow faculty to learn about online teaching at their own pace through online modules that cover identified technology competencies. The self-paced model makes the training scalable and flexible and accommodates faculty with different experience levels and availability. The workshops are designed to be mobile-optimized and publicly available without logins so faculty can access just-in-time learning resources.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation selected 9 out of 76 submissions to attend their Post-Secondary Success convening in September 2013. The selected submissions showcased innovative academic advising programs that addressed non-cognitive student support, utilized technology, and involved collaborative partnerships. Examples included using ePortfolios to develop students' skills, integrating culture into advising, and employing data to target at-risk groups. Peer coaching and mentoring models engaged students as advisors. The goal was to highlight advising approaches that improve outcomes for 21st century learners.

Developing alumni networks provides value by strengthening brands and leveraging alumni to recruit students and provide career support. 2) A case study of Academies Australasia Group's efforts showed assessing readiness, identifying challenges like outdated databases, and a 5-month coaching process to develop a plan including appointing alumni ambassadors. 3) Initial results were positive, showing alumni were interested in networking and providing advice. A dedicated alumni manager position was created to help manage the relationships and programs established.
