Editor's Notes

  • #2 Intro by VM – purpose, house rules etc…
  • #3 Strategy 2020to advance knowledge and transform lives through education and research, is one that resonates with most of us, as witnessed in the Staff Survey.  Delivering on our missionInvest/divest – survive/thriveGreat decisions – analysis & emotional intelligenceIterative cycle of forecasting and planning & accountability
  • #4 Annual ReviewFormal launch of University’s Annual Review for 2013 – the first Annual Review under Strategy 2020.United through a clear purpose and vision.Delivering on our mission to advance knowledge and transform lives through education and research.Reflects pride and achievements.the Enterprise University What we do here matters!Simple yet powerful privilege of working in higher education.Changes / Disruption in Sector
  • #5 Sector – opportunities and threats.Unprecedented change in sector nationally – more than other sectors.Funding, applications and the student needs.Much to positive about but these are difficult times. But period of disruption and development.Put into context with overview of sector developments.Starting with Autumn StatementCap lifted – surpriseFree marketOpportunities- no SNC / expand / more courses and studentsThreats – greater competitionCut to university funding HEFCE reduction of 6% in teaching grant. Some areas protected – retention funding and disabled student supportHigh cost subjects and capital funding for T&R increased to £440m.Message from BIS is to be more efficient ensuring students receive value for moneyVital we offer the best student experience and maintain students as partners approach. These changes are why we need to be fleet of foot in response if we are to achieve our ambitions.
  • #6 Recognise change is difficult and thank you for professional manner everyone is dealing with the process. In final year of three-year Project Plymouth 2015.Project to steady the ship.Responding in a measured way, with confidence, ambitious for our future and on our terms.Need to secure efficiencies – in light of the sector changes to funding and student expectations. We are doing well but we must invest to divest.Must invest in student experience as they are our income. So it is a huge transformational period but our CORE MISSION REMAINS THE SAME – UNCHANGED.
  • #7 Most things are not changing.First and foremost an academic and scholarly community. We are here to transform lives through education and research – turn students into highly employable, enterprising, global citizens – top graduates. And we are still doing a good job at that. The students are still coming.
  • #8 Vision is for us to become a university of first choice and do the best for our students and graduates.Last year number citing Plymouth as first choice rose 4%.News from UCAS at the moment is positive but we need to turn applications into firm acceptances:Plymouth University applicants up 5% on last year, slightly above national average of 4% (despite 1% drop in number of 18 year olds).International recruitment continues to rise.Excellent record in taking and working with disabled students.Nationally those from deprived backgrounds twice as likely to go to University as in 2004.35% of all 18 year olds applied to a university – HE still the way ahead for many despite fees increase.International recruitment increasing year on year. Excellent record and reputation in our work with disabled students.NERC GrantThe full economic cost of this grant is £622,345; however, about £75,800 is sub-contracted to a co-investigator in Bordeaux. To: Kim TieuManipulating mitochondrial dynamics as a potential therapeutic strategy for Parkinson’s disease: MR/L022079/1 grant application to the MRC, as agreed to fund your application Dear all You would be pleased to know that as PI, I have been awarded a consortium grant from NERC. Please see below! The consortium involves Plymouth University, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Kings College London, University of Nottingham and an International Partner, University of Piemonte Orientale, Alessandria, Italy. The total value of the consortium (80% of fec) is above £ 749 K; Plymouth University share is approx. £442 K (including sub-contracts). Many thanks for your continued support! Kind regards Awadhesh   -----Original Message-----From: grants@ssc.rcuk.ac.uk [mailto:grants@ssc.rcuk.ac.uk] Sent: 28 January 2014 13:08To: Awadhesh JhaSubject: Research Grant Proposal: NE/L006782/1 NERC:Research GrantElucidating the potential interaction of manufactured nanoparticles with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: An integrated toxicogenomics approach Professor Awadhesh Jha:University of PlymouthNE/L006782/1
