WHAT IS GENIE?
• GENIE is the Gender Initiative for Excellence.
• It has been funded by the Chalmers University of Technology Foundation. It was launched on 1st
January 2019 and runs until 2028.
• This is believed to be the largest individual investment in gender equality made by any university.
• GENIE wants to remove the structural and cultural obstacles that hamper women’s careers.
• GENIE wants to create a working environment that is diverse and inclusive and supportive of
excellence in research and teaching.

GENIE – TWO MAIN FOCUSES
• Equal culture, systems and
processes
Identify imbalances at each department, tailor
concrete actions, educate and increase
awareness. Meritocracy.
• Increase female faculty
Direct recruitment at different levels, provide
starting packages, internal calls, visiting
researchers.

GOALS
• Short-term
• All departments have a plan with measurable goals
and activities.
• Within 10 years
• No university divisions with only one gender.
• Salary gap between women and men should be reduced.
• Men and women should experience an equal situation.
• Women and men should feel that they have the same opportunity to be a
successful researcher.

THE PROGRESS OF GENIE SO FAR
• Funded data analysis, bibliometric study, female assistant professors and a pilot
study on integrating gender into all aspects of departmental work.
• Created new questions for the employee survey to assess work ambience in relation
to gender.
• Requested gender equality plans in departments’ annual operational plans (VP).
• Produced guidelines for direct recruitment of top female faculty.
• GENIE’s management has provided each department’s leadership group with tailor-
made activities that aim to increase gender equality.
• Open call for internal funding.

GENDER ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH
OUTPUTS
• Our role within the overall Chalmers GENIE project is to provide bibliometric
and other relevant analysis.
• This will be done by:
• Analysing the STEM publication output of individuals at Chalmers.
• Analysing the STEM publication output of individuals at other Swedish
Science and Engineering universities and centers.
