Overcoming Distraction in the Digital Age
Digital distraction has become a serious problem, with estimates that $650 million per year is lost to distraction. The ubiquity of digital devices has introduced a new phenomenon of "digital distraction" and "multicommunicating" that can make people feel more alone and depressed. While digital devices are ubiquitous with 9 out of 10 North Americans owning a mobile device, overcoming distraction involves understanding psychology and behavior change, such as setting timers to limit device use and embracing analog activities like taking handwritten notes. Employers are also addressing distraction by limiting work server access after hours, and encouraging employees to structure their days into small, distraction-free chunks.
The slow web
Just as with fast food and slow food, there is now a desire for a slow web. More sustainable, with more unwired time, where we are more aware of our choices and with lots of eco and green accents. In an age where we spend more of our waking hours 'plugged in' than not, we need to question how email, tweets and text messages interfere with our need for unwired time. Can a constant connection really help us to thrive in the digital age? The slow web also enables us to launch new initiatives to create a better future. Noodle economics, self sustainability and hyperlocal communities are all made possible thanks to the internet. There is a new generation willing to get rich the slow way. A generation that wants to contribute something to the world other than the next big marketing trick in town. And this at last will make us shift from ego systems to eco systems. Timely not real-time. Rhythm not random. Moderation not excess. Knowledge not information. These are a few of the many characteristics of the slow web. It’s not so much a checklist as a feeling, one of being at greater ease with the web-enabled products and services in our lives. If you can’t recall a few screen-free hours, or if you want to make web a more sustainable place, you might be in dire need of a talk about the slow web movement.

Slacktivism has received criticism for being ineffective, but it can also have benefits. It allows scientists to crowdfund projects that would otherwise lack resources. Online petitions and social media campaigns can raise awareness of issues and motivate more substantive support through volunteering or donations. While clicking 'like' may not solve problems, increased exposure on social media is necessary to publicize issues. Therefore, while slacktivism has limitations, it can also enable funding, mobilize grassroots support, and shed light on important causes.

In 21 century, the development of science and technology to promote the progress of human race. The science and technology make human has the new and beautiful life. Without technology, you wouldn’t receive a message from thousands of miles in a second; without technology, you would waste a whole day in the library to find information for your report; without technology, you only can watch recent news from the newspaper. The beginning of any kind of science and technology was to serve the purpose of human social development. However, due to the limitations of human knowledge and practice, the adverse consequences are always accompanied; when we take advantages of one thing, the disadvantages follow. Science and technology promote the progress of contemporary society. While promoting social development, it also brings with it a series of negative effects such as the deterioration of the ecological environment, spiritual crisis, moral crisis, and survival crisis. Because of the different considerations and pursuits of people's interests, and the improper use of science and technology, there have been many negative results. Generally speaking, the all-around distortion of science and technology in human society is destroying our social and spiritual world.
One of the negative impacts of science and technology is on the social environment. With the guidance and help of science and technology, the transformation and influence of people on nature are getting bigger and bigger. With the continuous expansion of human social economic scale and industrial scale, the negative impact of science and technology on the social environment has become increasingly apparent. There are many environmental issues caused by technology, “among the claimed negative effects of technology are global warming, ozone depletion, air and water pollution, species depletion and extinction, acid rain, overpopulation, deforestation, and radioactive and other toxic and nontoxic waste” (Karian). For example, advanced technology has developed the plastic that is convenient for people's lives. With the acceleration of the pace of life and the improvement of living standards, the amount of plastics is increasing day by day. At present, waste plastic has reached more than one-third of the waste, and it has greatly increased the difficulty and cost of waste disposal. “As plastic is non-biodegradable in nature, it remains in environment for several years” (Manuel), for this reason, if discarded waste plastic in the natural environment, it will provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies and bacteria; if buried it underground, it will easily pollute groundwater, hinder plant root growth, destroy soil quality, and affect crop yield; if fired waste plastic, it will produce a variety of toxic gases. · Scholars from University College London examine Internet and thinking (cognition) and discovered “skimming activity” by Internet users which researchers’ label “power browse”, a new form of reading/thinking. (7)
· People are more today than in the past three to four decades, but doing so in a different way (method). (8)
· Psychologist Wolf describes the Internet reading as “immediate” and “efficient” but sacrifices deep reading and thinking. We become, in her words, “decoders of information” disengaged from the interpretation needed for better understanding of the idea presented to us. (8)
· Wolf claims that reading places a challenge to the cognitive area of the mind since it is such an unnatural process, filled with symbols, directions and other affects. (8)
Intellectual Technologies and Influence on Human Behavior through the Ages
Carr suggests that technologies such as a typewriter place an unusual effect on our mind and our behavior. He explains using an example from Nietzsche and his use of the typewriter (10, 11, 12).
· People used to think that our mental meshwork, the dense connections formed among the 100 billion or so neurons inside our skulls, was largely fixed by the time we reached adulthood. (14) Olds, a professor of neuroscience, claims that research shows that the brain is capable of forming new neural connections based on the type of activity one does (14). This is my digital artefact submission for the E-Learning & Digital Cultures MOOC (EDCMOOC 3 : Nov-Dec14). The quotes I have used in the presentation bring out beautifully the debate on technology vs humanity and utopia vs dystopia - a debate that is as old as recorded history itself.
as mankind has evolved, so has technology. From the day and age of the wheel to the age of space travel, we certainly have come a long way. Yet, the viewpoints on technology differ. The dystopian view would be that technology tends to make slaves of us humans, rather than being masters of the technology created by us. The opposite view would perhaps be that we owe our very progress and existence to technology. Are either of the views wrong ?
Not in my view. Both are equally valid. Too much of a good thing can be bad. But then, when we speak of humanity falling prey to technology, we really cannot generalise. In my view, technology is there to make life simpler and more advanced. It all depends on how we use it. Becoming a slave to technology is also a choice, as is using it judiciously. That's my view, and you, the reader, are welcome to yours. Neither of us would be wrong. The debates on Humanity vs technology have always been there and will continue to rage long after you and I are gone.

Digitial Reading: Why is it Failing?

- 2. THE AUTHOR Nicholas G. Carr (born 1959) is an American writer who has published books and articles on technology, business, and culture. His book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains was a finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction. His books have been translated into more than twenty-five languages. Nick has been a columnist for the Guardian in London and has written for the Atlantic, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Wired, the New Republic, MIT Technology Review, Nature, and other periodicals.
- 3. The Book This book informs that how technology is effecting our brains. We are becoming dependent upon it in things like to increase work productivity, reading, and writing. We are becoming too use to being able to access information faster and more conveniently. University College London reported that there were new forms of reading called “power browse”, which is to skim and read for quick answers. Nicolas wrote the article as his personal experience using the internet and what he personally thinks.
- 5. THE ARGUMENT In response to Nicholas Carr’s Is google making us stupid, Trent Batson replies “No, Google is not making us stupid. What Google and the Web are doing is helping us re-claim our human legacy of learning through a rapid exchange of ideas in a social setting. Google is, indeed, making us smarter as we re-discover new ways to learn.”
- 6. WHAT I LEARNED It made me realize how much of a distraction technology actually is. Technology has made it hard for me to stay focused when reading things you cannot learn about quickly. Through technology we can access any information's in a minute rather than reading the whole book, this is effecting the learning.
