ABSTRACT
The main aim of my work is to prepare the Herbal toothpaste and certain laboratory test are
done like pH test, viscosity test, determination of abrasive particle, foamability. In herbal
toothpaste natural ingredient are used like neem leaves, guava leaves. Herbal toothpaste are
safer than synthetic toothpaste. The main ingredient of the herbal toothpaste are neem
leaves, camphor, honey, calcium carbonate, glycerine, sodium lauryl sulphate, methyl-
paraben , sodium chloride, distilledwater, guava leaves. The plant extract ingredient have the
antibacterial effect. The herbal toothpaste formulated which can satisfy all the required
condition to keep the mouth fresh and prevent tooth decay by bacteria.
Key words: Tooth-decay, Ingredient of herbal toothpaste, Natural ingredient.
INTRODUCTION
Toothpastes have been widely used from the ancient time till now. In India 75% people are
suffering from oral health problem. Most of the people in India need oral health care. The
toothpaste which is manufactured from the chemicals may be dangerous for use. The
chemicals may damages our tooth. The design of toothpaste formulation began in China and
India, as 300-500 BC.During that period, Squashed bones, pulverized egg and clamshells were
utilised as abrasives as a part of tooth cleaning. Modern toothpaste formulations were
developed in 19th century.
Enrichedwiththe goodnessof Neemandpotentoral care herbs,NeemToothpaste isanideal dental
care formulationthatprotectsagainstplaque,dental cariesandtoothdecay.Itishighlyrecommended
for routine usage asit preventsbadbreath(halitosis),gingivitis(bleedingandinflamedgums),dental
sensitivity.
A time-tested and scientifically validated herb, Neem is renowned for its antimicrobial, anti-
inflammatory, soothing and healing properties, which are extremelytherapeutic for oral health and
hygiene. It has been observed to be as good as Sodium Hypochlorite, an effective antimicrobial
commonly used in dental preparations. It is extremely useful in treating plaque induced gingivitis.
This100% safe andeffectiveherbal dental care preparationefficientlymaintainsdental hygiene, heals
oral ulcers,strengthensthe gums,brightensthe teeth,andendowscleanandfreshbreath.
MATERIAL AND METHOD:- The weight of every ingredient was decided by review
previous study formulation of Herbal toothpaste. I have manufactured three herbal
toothpaste by different composition of chemicals and plant extract as given in table.

FORMULATION
First of all I collected Neem leaves and guava leaves from the tree in my collage. Then Neem
leaves and guava leaves are allowed to dry in pharmaceutics lab. After 4-5 days the leaves are
dried. All the leaves are grinding by the help of grinder. After grinding the powder form of
leaves is formed. Weight the quantity of each and every chemicals by the help of weighing
balance. Now mix the guava and neem leaves according the quantity measured. After that
mix all the ingredients one by one except Methyl paraben, which is used as preservative in
the toothpaste. If the toothpaste is not thick and add sufficient quantity of water in it. Collect
in the final container. Toothpaste is ready and stored in lab.
All the chemicals and ingredient are present in the laboratory of our collage. Honey is bought
from the medical store.
Action of Neem leaves extract
Neem exerts potent antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens; it has significant antiplaque
activity and considerably ameliorates gingival inflammation. Neem protects against dental
caries by efficiently inhibiting the growth of dental pathogens; maintains and enhances oral
health and hygiene.
Action of Guava leaves extract
Sensitive teeth and gums can be difficult to cure on daily basis, because foods you eat and
liquid you drink can cause pain. Guava leaf extract will help in tooth problems like sensitivity
,bleeding gums, or mouth sores.
Physical examination (Colour, odour, taste, smoothness)
The formulated tooth paste having light greenish colour as checked visually.
The characteristic smell was found by smelling the product.
Taste was checked manually by tasting the formulation.
Smoothness was tested by rubbing the paste formulation between the fingers.
FINAL PREPRATION :
After manufacturing the three sample, I select one sample which is best in physical
examination. Then I prepare 100 gm of the selected sample by increasing the quantity of
materials.
Quantity of material for manufacturing 100 gm Herbal toothpaste.

Procedure:
First of all I went to botanical garden then I collected some neem and guava leaves. After that
I crushed the neem and guava leaves by the help of grinder. Then I went to pharmaceutics
laboratory and collect all the chemicals which I need. Weigh all the ingredient by the help of
weighing machine. Then I put all the chemicals into the mortar except Methyl paraben
because it is a preservative Hence preservative are added into the last step. Than mix all the
ingredient by the help of piston. After that add sufficient quantity of distilled water into the
composition. Mix well by the help of piston and placed the composition into a toothpaste
container and labelled well.
Determination of pH of Herbal toothpaste:-
Weight 10 gm of toothpaste and placed in 150 ml beaker. Allow 10 min for boil and add some
cooled water. Stir well by the help of a stirrer. Measure the pH of suspension using pH meter.
The pH of our Herbal preparation is 5.4 to 5.7.
Result and Discussion :-
The Herbal toothpaste formulation was prepared from Neem leaves, Guava leaves and some
synthetic ingredients. At the trail phase of formulation three batches were performed due to
problem like Homogeneity, spread-ability and Foamability. The two batch were discarded and
single batch was selected for next step.
