Criteria for Prefectship

To be eligible for Prefectship at MLC School a student will:

    Meet the expectations of a Senior School student
    Demonstrate over a sustained period of time, the
    qualities as outlined in the MLC Prefect Profile. This
    demonstration must include BOTH action and reflection.
The MLC Prefect Profile
Over a sustained period of time, an MLC School Prefect will demonstrate:

1. Principled behaviour
     Upholds and promotes the School rules
     Meets the expectations of a senior student in areas including uniform, attendance,
      correct use of leave pass
     Shows integrity in her relationships with staff and students
     Demonstrates courage in stepping out of her comfort zone
2. Contributions to the School and wider community
     Sport
     Culture
     Service
3. Leadership performed effectively in different contexts or settings
     Uses initiative
     Is decisive
     Responsibly influences peers and younger students
4. Positive and diligent application to Academic Studies
     Contributes to positive class atmosphere
     Persistent and committed
Prefectship at MLC 2014
The Prefectship Schoology Course is where you will find:
 all the resources to give you guidance and information about becoming an MLC School
   Prefect, including the prefect profile, application process and timeline.

 the place where you will document your growth as a leader: through “Leadership
   Reflections”.
   These reflections become a crucial part of your application for Prefectship.



Along your path to Prefectship it is vital that you:
 discuss your leadership journey on a regular basis with your Head of House, Luminary, or
   teachers in the school who you know about the work in which you have been engaged.

 lead by example for younger students in areas such as
   attendance, punctuality, attitude, school uniform, responsible use of student pass, House
   participation and compulsory activities, transport monitoring and involvement in co-curricular
   activities.
Application Process
Students will have two opportunities to apply for Prefectship at MLC School:
   First round: Term 4, Week 4 in Year 11.
   Second round: Term 1, Week 7 in Year 12.

Students will apply for Prefectship in a similar way to making a job application.
Each applicant will:

 write a cover letter, to your Head of House, explaining how you meet the criteria for
  Prefectship, as outlined in the MLC Prefect Profile. There are questions you can answer as a
  guide to help you write your letter on the online unit. It should be no more than 1 page.
 complete a CV (Curriculum Vitae) of your achievements and involvements at MLC School.
  A scaffold for the CV is in the “My CV” document in the Prefectship Application Folder on the
  Schoology site.
 complete the assignments in the My Leadership Reflections folder on Schoology. These are a
  minimum requirement and need to be completed in a timely manner as a record of your growth
  as a leader. You are welcome to submit any additional reflections as part of your application.
 attend an interview with an independent panel that may include the Head of Senior School,
  the Head of Students, Director of Academic Wellbeing, a Head of House, or other relevant
  Senior Staff representatives.
Letter of Application for Prefectship
   Questions that may help you to write your 1 page letter of application:

 Clearly explain why you think you qualify as an MLC Senior Prefect.

 There are many types of leaders and you can demonstrate leadership in a number of
  ways. Explain what type of leader you are.

 Outline specific examples of your demonstrated leadership over the past twelve
  months with clear links to how these experiences have helped you to develop a
  particular Making Leadership Count outcome.

 Discuss how you think you may have developed as a leader in the last 12 months.
  What have been your greatest achievements? What do you want to develop?

 What have been your greatest challenges in developing your leadership skills? What
  have you learned?

 You might like to represent this visually (e.g. a timeline with significant turning points).

The Leadership Reflections
You will need to complete the following assignments and submit them through
the drop-box facility on the Schoology Leadership Course.

Here are the 5 areas:
1.  Leadership Self-Assessment (do this a.s.a.p)
2.  House Goals (negotiate these with HoH soon)
3.  House Chapel Service Leadership
4.  Sporting Carnivals Leadership
5.  Wider School Involvement

You can submit these reflections in any form you wish: written documents,
voice recordings, video recordings, the choice is yours.

It is best if you do these reflections immediately after the event has occurred,
and you may come back and add to a reflection already submitted.
The Interview
 After submitting your application, you will have an
  interview with a Head of House (usually your own), and
  another member of the Academic Wellbeing Team. This
  could include another Head of House, Head of
  Students, Director of Academic Wellbeing or Deputy
  Principal.
 The interview will be recorded so that equity can be
  maintained between Houses, ensuring even standards
  and fairness in the approval process.
 The questions asked will be directly related to the MLC
  Prefect Profile.
 You will be notified in writing of the success of your
  application after all have been processed.

  • 2. Criteria for Prefectship To be eligible for Prefectship at MLC School a student will:  Meet the expectations of a Senior School student  Demonstrate over a sustained period of time, the qualities as outlined in the MLC Prefect Profile. This demonstration must include BOTH action and reflection.
  • 3. The MLC Prefect Profile Over a sustained period of time, an MLC School Prefect will demonstrate: 1. Principled behaviour  Upholds and promotes the School rules  Meets the expectations of a senior student in areas including uniform, attendance, correct use of leave pass  Shows integrity in her relationships with staff and students  Demonstrates courage in stepping out of her comfort zone 2. Contributions to the School and wider community  Sport  Culture  Service 3. Leadership performed effectively in different contexts or settings  Uses initiative  Is decisive  Responsibly influences peers and younger students 4. Positive and diligent application to Academic Studies  Contributes to positive class atmosphere  Persistent and committed
  • 4. Prefectship at MLC 2014 The Prefectship Schoology Course is where you will find:  all the resources to give you guidance and information about becoming an MLC School Prefect, including the prefect profile, application process and timeline.  the place where you will document your growth as a leader: through “Leadership Reflections”. These reflections become a crucial part of your application for Prefectship. Along your path to Prefectship it is vital that you:  discuss your leadership journey on a regular basis with your Head of House, Luminary, or teachers in the school who you know about the work in which you have been engaged.  lead by example for younger students in areas such as attendance, punctuality, attitude, school uniform, responsible use of student pass, House participation and compulsory activities, transport monitoring and involvement in co-curricular activities.
  • 5. Application Process Students will have two opportunities to apply for Prefectship at MLC School: First round: Term 4, Week 4 in Year 11. Second round: Term 1, Week 7 in Year 12. Students will apply for Prefectship in a similar way to making a job application. Each applicant will:  write a cover letter, to your Head of House, explaining how you meet the criteria for Prefectship, as outlined in the MLC Prefect Profile. There are questions you can answer as a guide to help you write your letter on the online unit. It should be no more than 1 page.  complete a CV (Curriculum Vitae) of your achievements and involvements at MLC School. A scaffold for the CV is in the “My CV” document in the Prefectship Application Folder on the Schoology site.  complete the assignments in the My Leadership Reflections folder on Schoology. These are a minimum requirement and need to be completed in a timely manner as a record of your growth as a leader. You are welcome to submit any additional reflections as part of your application.  attend an interview with an independent panel that may include the Head of Senior School, the Head of Students, Director of Academic Wellbeing, a Head of House, or other relevant Senior Staff representatives.
  • 6. Letter of Application for Prefectship Questions that may help you to write your 1 page letter of application:  Clearly explain why you think you qualify as an MLC Senior Prefect.  There are many types of leaders and you can demonstrate leadership in a number of ways. Explain what type of leader you are.  Outline specific examples of your demonstrated leadership over the past twelve months with clear links to how these experiences have helped you to develop a particular Making Leadership Count outcome.  Discuss how you think you may have developed as a leader in the last 12 months. What have been your greatest achievements? What do you want to develop?  What have been your greatest challenges in developing your leadership skills? What have you learned?  You might like to represent this visually (e.g. a timeline with significant turning points).
  • 7. Prefectship CV etc…
  • 8. The Leadership Reflections You will need to complete the following assignments and submit them through the drop-box facility on the Schoology Leadership Course. Here are the 5 areas: 1. Leadership Self-Assessment (do this a.s.a.p) 2. House Goals (negotiate these with HoH soon) 3. House Chapel Service Leadership 4. Sporting Carnivals Leadership 5. Wider School Involvement You can submit these reflections in any form you wish: written documents, voice recordings, video recordings, the choice is yours. It is best if you do these reflections immediately after the event has occurred, and you may come back and add to a reflection already submitted.
  • 9. The Interview  After submitting your application, you will have an interview with a Head of House (usually your own), and another member of the Academic Wellbeing Team. This could include another Head of House, Head of Students, Director of Academic Wellbeing or Deputy Principal.  The interview will be recorded so that equity can be maintained between Houses, ensuring even standards and fairness in the approval process.  The questions asked will be directly related to the MLC Prefect Profile.  You will be notified in writing of the success of your application after all have been processed.
