2. What is an adjective?
An adjective is a describing word. It provides a
description of something.
Examples of adjectives are: long, yellow, pretty,
noisy, quick, old, difficult, tasty, and humid.
By using adjectives, we can ensure that our
writing and speaking is more sophisticated.

3. Types of Adjectives
In Japanese, there are TWO types of adjectives.
There are some (the majority) which end in an い. These
are called い adjectives. E.g. ちいさい – small, かわいい –
cute.
The other type of adjectives are な adjectives. These
adjectives don’t end in a な. E.g. べんり – convenient, しん
せつ – kind.
EXCEPTIONS – Even though, きれい – pretty, clean and ゆ
うめい – famous, end in an い. They are actually な
adjectives.

4. Why are they called な
adjectives?
They are called な adjectives because if an
adjective is followed by a noun, you must add a
な. E.g. しんせつ な せんせい – kind teacher.
You don’t have to add anything after an い
adjective as the い is already there.
NOTE: Never add the な unless it is followed by a
noun. Sometimes なadjectives are written as
follows: しんせつ(な) and べんり(な).
