1. This document outlines a pre-assessment and introductory assignment for an art orientation course. Students are instructed to analyze and describe 4 images in 10 sentence paragraphs each, focusing on what they see and their personal experiences, and email the responses to the instructor. 2. The introductory assignment asks students to analyze additional images by describing the subject, material, distinguishing characteristics, and their visual and interest response, defending an answer of "yes" or "no" as to whether they find it interesting. Students are to email these responses to the instructor. 3. The purpose is for the instructor to assess improvements in the students' writing and analysis of art over the course of the semester from their initial pre

1. 1 Pre-Assessment and Introductory Assignment “Defining Art” Orientation in Art Art 101G G02 Instructor Gene Romero agene@nmsu.edu Living with Art, the ninth edition by Mark Getlein is the textbook for this course. If you have not acquired the textbook by now please email me at agene@nmsu.edu so we can make arrangements for you to acquire the textbook. The textbook is going to by the primary source of information for this course.

2. Pre-Assessment For the next four slides you will see two images marked by the letter “a” or “b” on each slide. Pick one image per slide and type out a paragraph or two about it. Your response per image should be at least ten sentences. Use the number of the slide and the letter of the image to reference the work of art you are writing about. Do your best to describe what you see and relate it to your own experiences in life. After viewing and writing about your four selected slides, email the four paragraphs to me via Black board. This is not a test. It is an assessment to see how you improve in your writing and analysis of Art over the course of the semester. Use complete sentences, proper punctuation and correct spelling in your paragraphs. After you are done with this pre-assessment, go on to complete the Introductory Assignment. You will be emailing me your responses via Blackboard. 2
