Students should keep a journal throughout the semester when they are
exposed to or participate in race-related conversations, taking care not to
reveal names or identities in their entries, unless it was a public event (class
presentation, campus speaker/event, etc.) They should then have a closing
entry (longer than the rest) in which they analyze all preceding entries for
appearances of the 4 frames of colorblindness, as well as analyzing to what
extent the settings in which the entries occurred were multiracial and/or
incorporated diverse viewpoints.
Option 2: Internet Analysis
In consultation with their instructor, students should select a particular
Internet site or group of sites in which race-related postings occur. These
sites must be public-access (e.g., not friends’ Facebook accounts). Students
should use the 4 frames of colorblindness to analyze the content posted, and
choose enough examples of content so that all 4 frames are represented in
the analysis.
Option 3: Media Analysis
In consultation with their instructor, students should select (a) a film that
has race as a major theme (e.g., Crash; Mississippi Burning; A Time to Kill;
American History X); OR (b) a TV program or programs that deal with racial
content (e.g., episode of talk show when race-related theme is considered;
episode of sitcom that confronts race directly); OR (c) 2-3 OpEd pieces in a
mainstream newspaper that discuss race-related issues. The paper should
present quotes that illustrate all 4 frames of colorblindness and analyze
them accordingly.
The next two pages of this handout contain the QEP rubric, upon which the
student’s submission will be graded. Each element will be worth a possible
total of 10 points.

Advanced conversation classes and materials are built upon the assumption that intriguing and controversial topics are the key to get learners to speak. However, learners see most of these open-ended activities designed to stimulate conversation and discussion as simple answer the questions exercises. When students are asked to provide their opinion on a topic, they often lack information about that topic and this is the reason why these discussion/debate activities do not work. Research shows that exchange of information tasks elicit more production than any other types of tasks and thus, promotes interaction and language acquisition (Long, 1989; Ellis, 2000). The informational nature of communication needs to be exploited fully in conversation classes. In this presentation we will discuss a task based approach to enhance advanced conversation skills. In this approach students individually research topics of their choice which then are discussed and shared through task-oriented activities in the classroom. In that sense the exchange of information has a clear purpose since listeners in the conversation are learning new concepts or ideas and not simply personal opinions. In order to guide students in the completion of research activities, we provide templates which can be used with the different concrete themes chosen by students. - 1. Subject Matter: Facts and Opinion Signal Words/Terms Materials: Illustration Board Chalk Visual Aids Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: Compose a definition for terms fact and opinion. State the difference between opinionated from factual sentences. Identify signal words which help explain why is it a fact or an opinion. Use signal words to express opinions or state facts. Motivation: 1. The class, in groups, plays a game called “Fact or Opinion”. 2. They guess if the presented sentences are either factual or opinionated. 3. Each group gets a point for every correct answer written on their illustration boards. 4. The winning group receives reward by the end of the period. Processing Activity: 1. The class reads several statements on the board. Some are facts while some are opinions. 2. They may agree or disagree or reserve judgment for later discussions. Input: 1. The class, in groups, brainstorms about how they feel on the presented statements on the board. Discussion: 1. The students, still in groups, answers the following questions. Which of the following statements is an opinion? Can this statement be proved true or false? If this statement can be proved true or false, how can it be checked? What details do the statements provide to convince the reader that the information is factual? What evidence is there to convince the reader that this is an opinion? Output: 1. The students think of their favourite movie or artists and list down five facts and five opinions about the subject. 2. Their answers will be written in a ½ sheet of paper and will be submitted to the teacher Integration: 1. The students return to their groups and come up with a definition of the terms fact and opinion.
