The form and enclosure of each space in
a building either determines or is determined by, the
form of the spaces around it.

Plane
Horizontal Plane
Base Plane:
• Seems to be figured out when there is a
perspective change in color and texture.
• With edge definition
• With surface attraction
Elevated Plane:
• Edge will well defined
• Visual spatial continuity interrupted
Depressed Plane:
Overhead Plane
• A horizontal plane that has been raised vertically to the extent that it begins to define a volume of
space between itself and the surrounding ground plane that it relates to.
• Vertical surface of depression establishes boundaries
• By contrasting form, geometry or orientation
Vertical Plane
Linear Vertical Plane:
• Defines the edge of volume of space
Single Vertical Plane:
• Articulates the space which it fronts
Parallel Plane:
• Two parallel vertical planes define a volume of space between them that is
oriented axially toward both open ends of the configuration.
• A U-shaped configuration of vertical planes defines a volume of space that is
oriented primarily toward the open end of the configuration.
