Power And Pathos Of The Hellenistic Era
Power and Pathos uses 50 absolute masterpieces to tell the story of the spectacular artistic
developments of the Hellenistic era (4th to 1st centuries B.C.), when new forms of expression began
to prevail throughout the Mediterranean basin and beyond. There was an extraordinary leap forward
in the development of techniques to form the first instance of globalization of the language of art in
the known world. Art was in effect, going international. This exhibit has gathered together some of
the most spectacular ancient bronze sculptures that still exists today. It displays monumental life
sized figures of Gods, Heroes, Athletes and rulers. Ancient cultures invented bronze. They
discovered that making an alloy of copper and tin produced a strong metal that could hold great
detail and objects cast with it can easily be reproduced. The ancient Greeks prized bronze for its
visual worth and they used it create statue of the human body. Unfortunately, because bronze is a
metal that can be cast and is expensive, it can also be melted down. Hence, large bronze statues have
rarely survived from antiquity, as most were melted down so that their valuable metal can be reused.
The ones that are still preserved today are mostly the same ones that were either lost at sea or buried
underground.
This paper in particular discusses two of the statues exhibited at the Power and Pathos exhibit at The
Getty Center in Los Angeles. It analyses and compares the statuette of Alexander the Great on

Famous Figurines Argumentative Analysis
In examining the famous figurines of the third millennium BCE, Richard Neer, David W. J. Gill and
Christopher Chippindale conclude that there are both material and intellectual consequences that
surround the looting of the 1,600 mysterious Cycladic antiquities. Through drifting, surfacing, illicit
excavation and "sinking" the illusory ways in which these now precious artifacts were found is
questioned in contemporary ethics. In summary, approximately 85 percent of the total figurines are
said to be found through the breaking into of secure tombs and robberies. Although these may be
corrupt, it is my contention that it is permissible in which the ways these findings were executed
originally. For without these illicit and undocumented loots,

Statues of David Essay
There have been many staues of David sculpted by famous artists like Donatello, Verrocchio, and
Michelangelo. Bernini's version of David and is about to begin his attack on Goliath, as he appears
posing. The statue seems to be moving through space and the action suggests that the action of
flinging the stone requires a lot of room around David. The statue forces the observer to look past
the actual subject and focus more on the surroundings. He seems to have very muscular legs, and
appears to be ready to turn and throw a stone from his sling. This is the most dramatic pose that
Bernini could have picked and was chosen because it shows a sudden burst of energy and a moment
of suspense as well. Bernini's David is different from that of ... Show more content on

In addition, it is different from the narrative form that Bernini created. Verrocchio shows David
standing over the giant's head with pride. This bears resembles Donatello's David where David is
standing with a foot on top of his oppressor.
Michelangelo was another artisan who portrayed David in a unique matter. He didn't represent
David standing over a defeated Goliath, but instead made him look like he was patiently awaiting
his enemy. The body has a very classical form and is muscular and very tense. The form makes
David look powerful. Michelangelo made David very strong with well defined features, iand even
included enlarged hands to show the viewer of the strength that David had before attacking Goliath.
Unlike other versions at the time, Michelangelo didn't create a version of a prideful David, but
instead a David who was amongst or aware of his enemy.
Donatellos, Verrochio's, and Michelangelo's figures compare in the sense that none of them show
any physical activity and are shown as prideful as they stand over oppressors. Bernini's rendition of
David is unique in the sense that he creates a more narrative figure instead of one that is poised and
more classical in style. Protestants strongly believed that imagery presented in the church could
cause people to venerate figures in statues rather than focus all their attention on God during the

Summary Of The Colossal Statue Of King Lamassu
With studying and learning about two different cultures one recognizes the why the art is different.
The purposes and details of each figure are both important and allow the figures to stand out as a
whole. The Colossal Statue of King Lamassu and Tuthankhamun are both amazing sculptures. The
details in each piece are constructed in away that it makes the viewer study each aspect of the
figurine. The two statues share some common aspects but they differ from time period, era,
structural details, and purpose.
Although the two statues are from two different time era and places they share some body and facial
aspects. When it comes to the structure of the body of the figures, they both share the detail of being
very muscular. The muscles in the legs and knees of both are greatly shown. One can see why the
muscles are detailed; with the importance of each figure showing strength provides and portrays
power control and dominance. The feet of both sculptures are profound as well. Even though the
Lamassu is a winged, bull body figure it has a human head just like Tuthankhamun. They both wear
their headpiece and beard. The eye shapes of the statues are similar as well. Both statues are a relief
carving which is only carved on one side. The sizes of the statues are over 10ft tall. The Lamassu is
17ft while Tuthankhamun is 15ft tall
The two have a few things in common but more differences. The biggest difference that is
noticeable just by looking at both figures is that the Lamassu

The Venus Mystery
The Venus figurines are a collection of 144 known statuettes from the Paleolithic era representing
women. They have been found in many different places including Europe, Siberia and even the
Mediterranean outside of Italy. These figurines are mainly constructed from different medias such as
bone, steatite, calcite and limestone.
Those figurines are also considered one of the earliest known work of the Paleolithic era.
It's not exactly known what the cultural meaning or purpose behind the statuettes is. However, it's
frequently suggested that they might have been used during rituals or served as a symbolic function.
During my research for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Delporte distinguished them in five different groups based in their geographic location.
Although they were originated in so many different areas, all the statuettes carry the same main
characteristics such as big hips and small heads and pointed feet. Some of them also carry big
breasts, hips, thighs and vulva. There's no face and in most of them arms and legs are absent.
Surprisingly the name "Venus" given to those statuettes has no connection with the Roman Goddess
Venus but since they carry such feminine traces and resemblance, they are considered a
representation of a female goddess by some.
I was very interesting to see how even with all the similarities they carry, some of them resemble a
pregnant women and some don't. The different sizes and measurements they can be found in
reminds me how each women is different from one another and if in the future they are indeed
rediscovered as the representation of the same goddess, it will be interesting to see and study how
every area pictured them

The Egyptian World
Throughout the Egyptian world, embalmers worked to preserve the inner life force that was thought
to reside within the body after death. It was common belief that by completing a seventy day process
known as mummification, the Ka, this spiritual entity, would be able to live on long after the person
died. Because of this, many people of the culture lived modest lives on Earth, saving immense
amounts of money and gold for intricate objects that could serve practical and decorative purposes
for their tombs. Every step of the preparations was handled with meticulous care as it was believed
that life on Earth was limited, while life in the afterlife was eternal. This cultural ideology of eternal
life after death is emulated by the statuary of the Egyptian world–especially by the granite pair
statue of Nefu and Khemet–setju from Giza, which was found in 1931 on the Harvard University–
Museum of Fine Arts Expedition. During the Old Kingdom, artists worked to form statues that could
accompany the body within the tomb, and if necessary, serve as alternative dwellings for the Ka.The
pair statue, which was created between 2455 BC and 2350 BC in the Fifth Dynasty of the Old
Kingdom, was likely created for this reason. One can identify the gender of the figures by
recognizing how Egyptian artists typically depicted males with darker skin than women. This
common practice along with the residual red paint on the body of the figure at the right, allows one
to conclude that the person on

Catalhuyuk Women Analysis
Part 1: During the 1960's an archeological dig conducted by James Mellaart took place in what is
now modern day Turkey. Mellaart was just one of many archeologists who wanted to understand the
civilizations of the Neolithic age, and Catalhuyuk (an early civilization which lived in what is now
modern day Turkey) in particular. The dig led to a discovery of multiple female figurines made from
baked clay called Venus figurines. These figurines were most likely created around 5,000 B.C.E.
Part 2: The Venus figurines could have been made to express the way the Catalhuyuk people viewed
women. Considering how plentiful the figurines are, historians can infer that women were most
likely worshipped. Women in the Catalhuyuk civilization could have been worshipped for many
reasons. They were capable of pregnancy which people may have thought connected them to the
earth. If they had a direct connection to the earth, they were goddesses or special beings which
would have be celebrated and praised. Because religion played such a huge part in their everyday
lives, perhaps the people created the figurines to call upon the earth goddesses for rain, crops, or
protection from illness. Looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This change could have been due to the rise of agriculture. The rise of agriculture meant that men
didn't have to hunt for food and women didn't have to gather food. Naturally the men decided that
women were too weak to participate in farming so the gender roles began to become imbalanced.
The women, not having to participate in food production were now viewed purely as tools for
expanding their population. Because the clock never ticked back in time, women still remain
unequal to men this day. If women could have played a part in the agricultural revolution, would
gender roles would be more

Essay on The Statues of Rahotep and Nefert
The Statues of Rahotep and Nefert
The first thing that strikes an observer of these two statues is the excellent condition they are in. The
paint on the two figures, Rahotep and Nefert, is extremely well preserved and there is only a
miniscule amount of perceptible damage. Rahotep, who is seated on the left, retains the air of
nobility and grandeur that a king's son and high priest would have undoubtedly enjoyed during his
lifetime. His wife, Nefert, sits adorned with an intricate wig and headband that match her bright
jewelry and indicate her elevated social status. Together, the figures complement each other
perfectly and provide a valuable glimpse into the world of non–royal funerary art of Ancient ...

Rahotep wears a very plain kilt and a small amulet around his neck. He has close–cropped hair and
his face is adorned with a thin mustache. He has broad shoulders and muscular arms and it is worth
noting that his right arm is held across his chest while his left rests on his thigh. In this respect he
resembles Djoser, but the horizontally held arm goes out of fashion later in the Fourth Dynasty. The
biggest contrast between Rahotep and his wife is the color of his skin, which is almost the color of
clay. In the majority of limestone statues, the husband is portrayed as having much darker skin than
his wife has. This is probably due to the fact that men spent more time outside and wore less than
women. A similar style is apparent in ancient wall paintings from Thera, Greece that are housed in
the Athens Archaeological Museum. In them, the men are portrayed as either red or brown while the
women are snow white.
Nefert wears a shoulder–length wig and ornate headband decorated with symmetrical designs. The
sculptor paid great attention to details, as her real hair and the straps from her dress can be told apart
from the wig and her robe. Nefert's nipples also protrude from her bosom and only one of her hands
is visible. The other hand, much like most of Nefert's body, seems to mold with the dress which
itself molds with the chair. Contrasting with the very

The Museum Of Fine Art
The Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas has a variety of art collections. To be precise, the
canopic jar is mounted on a large pedestal among other sculptures. This Canopic Jar was made in
Egypt during the dynasty XXVI, 664–525 B.C. It was made from limestone. The jar was masterfully
carved from stone and subsequently painted over. It is a historical masterpiece and it is relatively in
good condition. Such stone jars were used to house the organs of the deceased. Their organs were
put in these canopic jars during the mummification process. The lids of these stone jars have a
human face. The faces were carved to represent the four sons of the god Horus. The three–
dimensional jar is solid and quite large. It is well displayed in a spacious environment. The lid of the
jar is organic due to the life–like face that stares back at the viewer. The rest of the jar is cylindrical
with graceful proportions. The size of the jar interpenetrates with the surrounding space. It turns in
space and it was meant to be viewed from several points of view. Its cylindrical nature makes the
viewer's eye wander all around its form to take in its splendor. Contour lines have been used to make
the gentle outline of the jar, giving it a closed silhouette. The dominant linear elements have been
incised on the surface of the jar. Beautifully crafted hieroglyphic inscriptions can be seen on the
middle of the jar. The contour outline of the jar makes it have a volumetric presence. There are

I Walked Up The Massive Stone Steps
I walked through Central Park and emerged to see an immense temple of art standing before me. As
I walked up the massive stone steps, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was overwhelmed by
how enormous the building was and how small I was in comparison. I was overcome with a sense
that I was about to witness something much larger than myself. Once I walked inside, I stared up to
the large vaulted ceilings and to the long corridors full of masses of people admiring the history in
front of their eyes. There is an all–encompassing sense of cultural importance standing in the lobby.
The value of what I was about to experience was global and proven in the many languages available

mars and venus: comparing the chacmool with the woman of willendorf Modern figurines of art
stem directly from the hands of the ancient's. The organic forms of modernly sculpted artifacts can
most likely be directly referenced to the movements of prehistoric artworks. There seems to be an
ongoing transition on how cultures no matter how stretched apart through time, contrasted by
ethnicity or religious views; can all be somewhat related to each other by the methods or principles
portrayed through their artworks. In fact, I saw that very transition; within two works in which are
extremely different in meaning, craftsmanship, time, culture and so on. However, I was still able to
find similarities within the artifacts. In this paper I will examine Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic
carving in limestone; which can fit in the palm of one's hand. As well as, The Sacrifice of
Chacmool, which are a plethora of Mesoamerican statues emulating rituals of sacrifice. The
Chacmool figures are always portrayed with their heads looking at their sides and their backs to the
ground, upon their stomachs are bowls in which people would place offerings to the gods. The
Chacmool's primary function was to hold offerings for rituals; the offerings would range from
common foods to human organs. Archeologist suggests that the figures were found in ruins of the
ancient cities Teotihuacan and Tula. They suggest that the works

further down the list, the figurines become a bit more childlike in how they were crafted, the ones

lecturer cast doubt on this theory by stating that the weapons used in the Neolithic period showed
signs of wear; they are often found cracked and broken, but the carved stone balls are well

What is art? It can be explained as a diverse building up of mortal activities. Art is the single thing
that can change people by the thousands, millions, and billions. If we were to use words to describe
exactly what art is we can say that it is: expression, beauty, different, love, technical, abstract,
creativity, always changing, convincing, emotion, free, diverse, innovative and inspiring.
Art has changed many people and gave humans what they need to morph into what they are now.

The earliest recorded of art was around 25000 BCE and before this time. This art included pieces
like the Venus of Willendorf. The Venus of Willendorf is a figurine that was found in Austria
featuring a female carved from limestone. This is not the only Venus figurine found, others were
made with bone, ivory and clay. Also all of the Venus figurines have a diamond shaped. Many
prehistoric art involved sculptures. A lot of Neolithic as said before cannot be proven as religious
but this is starting off art we have today which we need to review over. Some prehistoric artwork
includes the Jiahu Carvings, the Jiahu carvings were dated back to 7000 BCE and are made out of

Another piece of artwork can be known as the Niola Doa. The Niola Doa was found in Africa and is

main focuses were on the church and there was nothing else. In This art, you can tell the major

Women have always had an important role in this planet, as a companion, worker, nurture and

Art Vs Medieval Art
When looking at history and the art produced throughout history, it is interesting to learn how it all
started and how it changed throughout the centuries. Starting with Prehistoric art leading to the
periods of Early Medieval and the Romanesque. Then when looking deeper at the art pieces created
throughout the centuries, something that stood out to me was how people were depicted and
idealized. Starting with the prehistoric art period, where there is only a few miniature sculptures that
depict women and men of that time. Then when looking at the Romanesque and Medieval art pieces,
the human body is more stylized and depicted differently. When looking at these types of aspects, it
makes me think about today and how people are either admired or judged for their beauty and body
image. Within this paper, I will be focusing on the major art periods that we learned and explain
how people were physically depicted and idealized, and reflect on how it is still seen today, within
society and their standards.
Starting with the Prehistoric period, where some of the earliest art images were created, people were
depicted in miniature sculptures and ceramic pieces. They were usually created small enough where
people could hold them in their hands and carry them around from place to place. Then when
looking at pieces like these, they would generally give basic depictions of characteristics within
facial features, while the humanly shape was something they focused more on. When looking at

Compressions In Bringing Of Joy By Beatrice Achike
Bringing of Joy
The characterization of Beatrice Achike undergoes change throughout the novel. In the beginning of
the novel she is depicted as someone who could be considered as being weak and is portrayed as
Eugene's possession; someone who is quiet, submissive and obedient and who always speaks in
gentle, soothing and calm tones. Beatrice refuses to speak up against Eugene's violence, and even
though she does not condone nor accept the violence, she does not feel as though she can leave such
an affluent, socially influential and well respected man. All of this adds to the portrayal of Beatrice
as being weak and submissive. However, towards the end of the novel, after many beatings and a
number of miscarriages brought on by these beatings, Beatrice realises that she needs to stand up to
her husband to protect her children and to protect herself, and so she slowly starts to plan Eugene's
ultimate demise.

she opposes each of the author's reasons. First, the article states that one theory is that they were

unlikely were used for hunting or fighting purposes. Second, the reading claims that the second

Analysis: The Venus Of Willendorf
I am writing about The Woman of Willendorf from the Paleolithic Period. This female figurine was
named "Venus of Willendorf" by a archeologist in 1908. The statue was carved from limestone and
was colored with red orche. The sculptor is 4 and 3/8 inches in height but seems much larger due to
it's rounded forms. This statue is an important icon of prehistory. Archeologists have suggested
different ways of understanding the sifginicance from which it was made. One of the first
suggestions is that it was a "Venus figure" or "Goddess" used as a symbol of fertility. The statue has
an enlarged stomach and breasts, the pubic area is emphasized probably serving as a symbol of
procreation. The second suggestion is that the sculpute may have been

Does Morley Promote Laziness
Being lazy tends to have a negative connotation, but Morley takes a different stance and challenges
his readers to uphold laziness as one of the true means to become happy. Morley is similar to a
salesman, as he promotes his product, laziness, in hopes of gaining the attention and support of
others. Like many salesmen, Morley has a catch. By concealing his satirical viewpoint, he is able to
distract his audience and continue to promote laziness undetected. Masking this satire, Morley
diverts the attention of his audience by incorporating model figures and reinterpreting conventional
knowledge to promote laziness. Morley supports his claims under a foundation of satire and
exaggeration. At first glance, Morley's whole essay may seem conceivable. Strange, but
conceivable. His opening paragraph describes how he himself is a lazy individual and using this
observation, presents the rest of his essay in the same sluggish manner. He insists that, "he intended
to write an essay on laziness, but was too indolent to do so. The sort of thing we had in mind to
write would have been exceedingly persuasive. We intended to discourse a little in favour of a
greater appreciation of Indolence as a benign factor in human affairs." Morley can be seen as a

cultures from the Gravettion period around 25,000 B.C, some researchers call this the first sign of
intelligent beings on earth. The sculptures were prone to many different crafting techniques that
included casting, the carving of softer rock material including limestone, calcite, ivory, and bone
that often depicted an exaggerated and disproportional body of a woman. A softer source material
helped the craftsmen sculpt the Venus figure more precisely. The sculptures are vastly skewed and
often have a relatively tiny, faceless head in contrast with

A social occasion of stone figures from Tell Asmar depicts divine beings , pastors, and admirers in a
way inside and out not quite the same as Egyptian model. These figures are cone–framed, with
flaring skirts, little heads, gigantic, beaklike noses, and colossal, looking eyes. A more imperative
delicacy and wonder can be found at a still later point of convergence of this district, Babylon. The
Babylonians used splendidly shaded tiles as a piece of their reliefs. Persian champs who included
Babylon in the 6th century B.C. conveyed with them a custom of fine craftsmanship. This
inclination hung on as they continued making prominent arrangements in bronze and gold. Now and
again the layouts are just dynamic ornamental illustrations; as a less than dependable rule, they are
animal casings wholeheartedly framed into smooth figures. Design from the impressive imperial
habitation of Darius at Persepolis (began around 520 B.C.) holds some Assyrian highlights. The

Essay On Disney Infinity
Disney has been using transmedia for many decades now, and after releasing their latest video game
platform Disney Infinity, they have proven once again that they are innovative players in the
transmedia field. Through Disney Infinity, Disney show how far the limits of transmedia reach. In
this essay I will be explaining what Disney Infinity is and what the Disney Infinity universe is and
how it works to complement the separate franchise canonically. After this i will be introducing the
reasons how and why Disney Infinity was a success and helped Disney to be a strong influencer in
the transmedia platform.

This also points to the fact that with transmedia, there is the idea that fans of franchise do not want
stories they love to be separated from each other but instead all of the stories should take place in
the exact same universe and should not contradict each other within the narrative. So how did
Disney make Disney Infinity have similar narrative relationships between the film's story and the
game's story? Well, Disney designed Disney infinity to not contradict the two storylines but instead
complement each other. This defines Disney Infinity's storytelling as part of the franchise's hard
transmedia storytelling, because of their successful efforts to make the universe fully canonical. This
"rule" so to speak, Is shown through the fact that the consumer cannot play one Play Set franchise
while using a character from a different Play Set. The amazing thing about Disney infinity is that it
allows several individual franchises to extend their transmedia storytelling product in one game.

Venus Figurines: The Clovis Culture
1. Venus figurines: Figurines carved to depict a female's body. These figurines often exaggerated the
female's body parts such as the breast, buttocks, hips, and the stomach. The figurines were usually
carved from stone, antlers, mammoth tusks, or baked clay. These figurines have convinced some
scholars that Paleolithic thought had a strongly feminine dimension.
2. Dreamtime: Dreamtime is a elaborate and complex outlook on the world. Dreamtime was
revealed in countless stories, ceremonies, and in the rock art. Dreamtime was used to show us the
past events happened and how it links present–day life to timeless events in the past. In this outlook
of the world, everything happened in a natural order.

The societies in the Paleolithic era differed from one another because each society had a different
governments, diets, social organizations, what tools they used, and how they adapted to their
environment. Some societies decided to move into a permanent settlement or village while others
decided to keep their way of hunting and gathering. The societies that decided to move into a
settlement started to become larger and complex. This allowed early humans to be able to
accumulate more goods which caused more inequality in these societies.
2. The agricultural revolution was a decisive turning point in human history because of many
reasons. Agriculture supported larger populations because it was possible to domesticate enough
food for everyone. Another bonus of the agricultural revolution was that it led into a explosion of
technological innovation which provided us with more technologies and techniques such as pottery
and weaving.
Hunter–gatherers were fine without agriculture, and they lived many years without it. Agriculture
may have provided a more effective way of more food, but along with it brought non–nutrient diets,
social inequality, and the risk of disease spreading easier because the population is

The Venus of Willendorf Formal Analysis Essay
The Venus of Willendorf is one of the oldest and most famous early images of a human. She
represents what use to be the "ideal woman" with her curvy figure and the emphasis on fertility seen
in the features of her sculpted body. This paper will analyze the Venus of Willendorf sculpture in
terms of its formal analysis. Most of the information about the Venus of Willendorf is based on
scientific research and theory because there is no actual documentation that dates back as far as the
sculpture. The Venus of Willendorf was sculpted long before any type of written language was
discovered. There are a few different dates as to when art historians believe she was sculpted

The style of the Venus of Willendorf is appropriate for her time period because most early pre–
historic art consists of small figurines of nude women with little or no emphasis on facial features,
which are exactly the characteristics of the Venus of Willendorf. The Venus of Willendorf is a
sculpture that was sculpted out of limestone and stands to be 4 ½'' tall. The figurine was most likely
carved out of limestone because early pre–historic artists generally had to create art out of whatever
materials they had available. The figurine is only 4 ½" tall is because it was common for pre–
historic artists to carve small, hand held, portable figurines. The sculpture was found on the banks of
the Danube River, an area where pre–historic hunter–gatherers were thought to have lived and
traded goods with other civilians. The use of this piece of artwork is to portray the importance of
women and fertility in pre–historic times because these features are ones that ensured the survival
and future of mankind. The concern of this piece of artwork is the importance of fertility to
mankind. The artist was emphasizing the important fertility features woman have that lead to

King Aspelta Analysis
The Colossal Statue of King Aspelta appears to be especially influenced by the statue design of Old
Kingdom Egypt, despite being a Kushite work from the Nubian region produced between the years
of 593 and 568 BC. Due to the larger than life size of Aspelta, the eye is initially drawn to the
pectoral and abdominal region of the body. This portion of the statue is especially idealized as the
pectorals are toned and the abdomen is similarly muscular. Furthermore, there is no indication of
any weakness or fat, which would be typical of the average human being. Even in the absence of the
work's title, this makes it evident that subject was in a position of power and wish to be seen as an

Mentuemhet was a mayor and prophet from the city of Amen responsible for the reconstruction of
temples that had been destroyed by invading Assyrians. The statue itself is quite similar that of King

individualized face in the same way as King Aspelta. Furthermore, Mentuemhet is posed in the
characteristic left foot forward stance of Old Kingdom Egypt. Likewise, the respective statues wear
the same attire, a skirt with the same designs. This also appears to be a nod to the Old Kingdom
Egypt as the same piece of clothing can be viewed on statues of leaders from this period, like

permanence and longevity of statue which hints toward the timeless aspect of Egyptian statues due

Paleolithic Venuses Essay
Paleolithic Venuses
1.) Discuss the meaning of the Paleolithic Venuses. Identify Rice's position and explain it. Discuss
four other interpretations of these figurines mentioned in class or in the reading. Do any or all of
these interpretations support the views of the 19th century evolutionist Johann Jakob Bachofen?
Paleolithic Venuses are prehistoric sculptures that are traditionally thought, by experts to be images
that adore and glorify female fertility. There are three reasons why most historians who study the
Paleolithic era support this traditional idea. One, most analysts only use a sampling of the 188
figurines and most of them are pregnant. Secondly, the name Venus itself conjures up the notion of
fertility. Thirdly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And the result was that only 70% or 132 figurines were used to complete the study. Out of the 132
figurines used for the study, it was determined that 23% were of women under the age of 15. 17 %
were statuettes of pregnant women. 38% were of non–pregnant women in the reproductive stage,
and 22% were of , post reproductive women. It was then concluded by Rice that there is no evidence
to support the traditional view that the Paleolithic Venuses represent fertility since the largest group
of statues were of adult women while the smallest group were made up of pregnant females.
However, these results did not completely satisfy her. She then raised the question that since these
figurines were not sculptured for fertility purposes, then why were these sculptures made? Rice
believes that the answers to this question lie in the cultural aspects in the Paleolithic society. IN the
article she discusses the roles and status of women in the society. She talks about the various
responsibilities that women have in each stage of their lives. The three important jobs that women
had in the society are being the reliable source of food, providing a stable home including social and
sexual partnership, being the givers of life. Four other interpretations of these figurines include; the
association with a fertility cult, erotic art, calendar counting, and the theory these figures represent
the leaders of the Paleolithic era. These interpretations cannot answer for all of

Analysis Of 'Family Callers'
Background
"Family Callers" is a sculpture created by artist Robert Weibel. Weibel is a contemporary artist from
Illinois. His artistry consists of various contemporary pieces (Weibel, Contemporary Artist Robert
Weibel). The 1821 Gallery and Studios located in downtown Fresno is currently displaying much of
his work that consists of using various types of media. His collection that is currently on display
includes both two and three–dimensional works such as paintings and sculptures comprised wood
and other non–traditional materials, respectively. Weibel's work also includes igniting gunpowder
with paper and attempting to use other mediums to generate mythopoetic works of animals and
people, both real and imagined (1821 Gallery & Studios).
Review Purpose
For this Galley Review, two methods of evaluation of the artwork will be utilized. Pertaining to
"Family Callers," the two methods of critique that would be most appropriate would be Modernist
criticism. Psychoanalytic criticism is appropriate for works of art that deal with fantasy, dream
imagery, strong emotional content or intuition (Lazzari and Schlesier 98). Based on Weibel's
preference towards creating mythopoetic works of animal and people, real and imagined,
psychoanalytic criticism is fitting. Structuralism is another Modernist theory which applies to
Weibel's fantasy sculpture work as it is critique and exploration of the complex interrelationship of
the structure of the piece and all of its parts. His

Venus Of Willendorf Essay
Throughout history, cultures have created. Whether it was in the form of art, weapons, architecture,
or something else, it's always been present. By looking at art from prehistoric, near East, Egyptian,
Aegean and Roman times, we can see the progress we have come in creating. From starting out of
clay in prehistoric times, to creating with marble. In Ancient prehistoric times, the human body was
portrayed through a female figurine. These figurines represented fertility. A prime example of the
human body from this time, is through the piece, Venus of Willendorf. The Venus of Willendorf had

Roman sculptors designed to impress. To invoke a feeling of power. The Roman sculptures often
showed influences from Etruscan sculpture and Greek sculptures. Etruscans influence Roman art in
the sense that they are the reason that Roman artists are familiar with contemporary Greek figures.
Their sculptures influence by them feature almond shaped eyes, a smiling mouth, elaborate locks of
hair, a robe with a zigzag edge, and mannerisms of archaic Greek sculpture. Greek influenced
sculptures are copies and imitations of the legitimate Greek statue or relief. Roman artists started to
make more art with the idea to express Roman ideas. By doing this rather than copying art from the
Greeks, is why the Roman sculpture is even a thing. An example of Roman sculpture that represents
the human body is the sculpture, Augustus of Prima Porta. In this sculpture Augustus is represented
as a military commander who is haranguing his troops. The details of the sculpture are thought to be
copied from life. Reliefs on the breastplate, fringes on the tunic folds and the folds of the military
cloak are carefully imitated from life. The bare feet and similarity in pose and proportions show how

The Venus Willendorf and Laussel
The Venus
Willendorf and Laussel
During the Upper Paleolithic era artists created a wide range of small sculptures. These sculptures
were made from various materials, including ivory, bone, clay, and even stone. They represented
humans, as well as animals; they even combined them at times. Most of the sculptures from this
time show a high level of skill. From this time, there were two very influential sculptures, The
Venus of Willendorf and the Venus of Laussel. This paper will discuss both sculptures, in detail, as
well as, compare and contrast them.
The Venus of Willendorf, also known as the Woman of Willendorf, stands 11 cm. high and is

Sculptures in relief are typically more detailed than those in the round. This is because some of the
original material remains and forms the background plane. Like the Willendorf, Laussel also was
sculpted to have over exaggerated breasts, with large breasts and vulva. Unlike the Willendorf, the
Laussel has more detail in the rest of the body. There is still no face, but there is focus on the arms
and legs as well; where with the Willendorf, they weren't even carved into the figure at all. The
Laussel is shown holding a wisent horn, or possibly a cornucopia, in one hand, which has 13
notches. It is believed that the notches are carved to indicate the number of nights between the first
crescent and full moon, signifying a recognized relationship between a single menstrual and lunar
cycle. It was painted with red ochre, like Willendorf, that was also thought to represent the blood
from child birth. She also has her hand placed on her stomach (or womb). There is a "Y" on her
thigh and her faceless head is turned toward the horn.
I was drawn to this time period as well as these two sculptures. As I researched both sculptures I was
fascinated by how much respect the people of that time had for their women. Not only for what they
could do for them, but also for what they looked like. They didn't see the weight and size as a
grotesque thing; but more as a thing of beauty. In

Sculptures at Crosby Beach
Whilst visiting Crosby beach in October 2013 there was evidence of the public altering the statues
appearance. Somebody had knitted around the ankle of one, and also placed a hard hat on the head.
The statues being placed at Crosby beach had created a large tourist attraction and we see how the
public introduce their own enjoyment to the art.
With the sculptures being constantly moved to different locations, they were granted permission to
be permanently positioned at Crosby beach in 2005, despite some objections. Certain people
believed that the figures were offensive and pornographic due to them being naked with genitalia on
show. They also believed that they were a safety hazard due to it being difficult to differ between a
human and a sculpture in low lighting. Also, reaching the figures close to the sea was shown as a
hazard due to the sinking mud; a problem which I had encountered myself! The sculptures being
made out of Cast iron is also relevant to them being positioned in Crosby beach. The cast iron links
to the Liverpool's industrial origin as a major port. The figures stand watching as many ships pass
each day, as they are reaching their new destination. The sculptures are possibly standing, waiting to
travel to 'Another place.' This point is strengthened by the fact that some of the sculptures are half
buried in the sand, giving the impression of the statues walking into the sea.

Ancient Greek Art And Its Impact On Ancient Greece
Ancient Greek art has been one of the most influential art forms in the past centuries. The Keros
sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The
Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created
in a small island called Cyclades in 2600–2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the
Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of
islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos.
The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate
event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found in
their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all
through history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to
lack of background information and it's obvious missing parts. An abudance of myths surround these
sculptures since Ancient Greece is also known for its devotion to Greek mythology. The
significance, use, and meaning of the figures are unclear. There is even debate about whether the
figures were meant to lie flat or to stand against a wall––there is no definitive evidence either way.
Numerous explanations about the significance of the figurines have been proposed: the figurines
may have been apotropaic (i.e., to ward off evil) or served as

Ever since the beginning of the Stone Age around 25,000 B.C. and throughout the late classical

I believe that the stomach was actually used to show pregnancy, and portrays the woman as a
maternal figure, or simply, "Mother Earth."
The Venus of Willendorf was found in 1908 by a workman named "Johann Veran" (Selen). It was
found by archeologists at a Paleolithic site. Here at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna,
Austria, we have the only authentic Venus Figurine (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien). The artifact's
purpose is still being speculated by many. But from what I can infer, the figurine was used a a
maternal figure, and it shows the richness of female fertility.
It portrayed the woman as being the care giver of life, and it showed her as something everyone
looked up to, either for riturals or as a figurine of fertility. She may have been the Goddess of life; a
status similar to "Mother Earth.". However, I believe that the purpose of ti was to show woman what
their capabilities were, and it seemed to focus on the strengths that they possessed and what their
functions in society were. In this case, the large breasts, stomach, and hips (Selen). It potentially was
used to symbolize new life, or maybe even a new beginning. Now if you focus on this statuette you
will notice that it's roughly only about 4 inches long. The statuette is named the "Venus of

The Art Of Sttatuary Art In Ancient Greece
Statuary art is the style of art consisting of three–dimensional figures created by artists to display a
person in the form of a statue as a symbol of honor or respect. Statues majorly evolved within
Classical Greece, between the years 479–323 BCE, and during the Roman Empire times. Although
during both eras they may have both been using the art of statuary and in which they exhibited
similarities, they were in fact, very different. It began with the Greeks, using the form of art to
display idealism, then the Romans continued to practice the art to display realism.
The Greeks and the Romans used the art of statuary similarly to represent their people in the form of
a permanent piece of art. Their similarities in their pieces include the materials they used, such as
bronze, as bronze, stone, metals and some marble. Unfortunately, they also have the similarity that
most of their remaining sculptures of those of stone and marble, due to the consistent need of metals
in the years to follow them. Another resemblance would be that they both used it to demonstrate
what is vital to them; fitness to the Greeks and leadership to the Romans. Even though they had
many common characteristics, they also had a variety of differences.
The Greeks created their statuary art using idealism techniques. Though it was the art of restraint,
the statues were fashioned with imagination, within a rulebook. The artists showed creativity by
altering details ever so slightly from what has been done

What is the significance of the Venus of Willendorf and the Catal Huyuk figures and what do they

Power And Pathos Of The Hellenistic Era

  • 1. Power And Pathos Of The Hellenistic Era Power and Pathos uses 50 absolute masterpieces to tell the story of the spectacular artistic developments of the Hellenistic era (4th to 1st centuries B.C.), when new forms of expression began to prevail throughout the Mediterranean basin and beyond. There was an extraordinary leap forward in the development of techniques to form the first instance of globalization of the language of art in the known world. Art was in effect, going international. This exhibit has gathered together some of the most spectacular ancient bronze sculptures that still exists today. It displays monumental life sized figures of Gods, Heroes, Athletes and rulers. Ancient cultures invented bronze. They discovered that making an alloy of copper and tin produced a strong metal that could hold great detail and objects cast with it can easily be reproduced. The ancient Greeks prized bronze for its visual worth and they used it create statue of the human body. Unfortunately, because bronze is a metal that can be cast and is expensive, it can also be melted down. Hence, large bronze statues have rarely survived from antiquity, as most were melted down so that their valuable metal can be reused. The ones that are still preserved today are mostly the same ones that were either lost at sea or buried underground. This paper in particular discusses two of the statues exhibited at the Power and Pathos exhibit at The Getty Center in Los Angeles. It analyses and compares the statuette of Alexander the Great on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Famous Figurines Argumentative Analysis In examining the famous figurines of the third millennium BCE, Richard Neer, David W. J. Gill and Christopher Chippindale conclude that there are both material and intellectual consequences that surround the looting of the 1,600 mysterious Cycladic antiquities. Through drifting, surfacing, illicit excavation and "sinking" the illusory ways in which these now precious artifacts were found is questioned in contemporary ethics. In summary, approximately 85 percent of the total figurines are said to be found through the breaking into of secure tombs and robberies. Although these may be corrupt, it is my contention that it is permissible in which the ways these findings were executed originally. For without these illicit and undocumented loots, ... • 5. Statues of David Essay There have been many staues of David sculpted by famous artists like Donatello, Verrocchio, and Michelangelo. Bernini's version of David and is about to begin his attack on Goliath, as he appears posing. The statue seems to be moving through space and the action suggests that the action of flinging the stone requires a lot of room around David. The statue forces the observer to look past the actual subject and focus more on the surroundings. He seems to have very muscular legs, and appears to be ready to turn and throw a stone from his sling. This is the most dramatic pose that Bernini could have picked and was chosen because it shows a sudden burst of energy and a moment of suspense as well. Bernini's David is different from that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, it is different from the narrative form that Bernini created. Verrocchio shows David standing over the giant's head with pride. This bears resembles Donatello's David where David is standing with a foot on top of his oppressor. Michelangelo was another artisan who portrayed David in a unique matter. He didn't represent David standing over a defeated Goliath, but instead made him look like he was patiently awaiting his enemy. The body has a very classical form and is muscular and very tense. The form makes David look powerful. Michelangelo made David very strong with well defined features, iand even included enlarged hands to show the viewer of the strength that David had before attacking Goliath. Unlike other versions at the time, Michelangelo didn't create a version of a prideful David, but instead a David who was amongst or aware of his enemy. Donatellos, Verrochio's, and Michelangelo's figures compare in the sense that none of them show any physical activity and are shown as prideful as they stand over oppressors. Bernini's rendition of David is unique in the sense that he creates a more narrative figure instead of one that is poised and more classical in style. Protestants strongly believed that imagery presented in the church could cause people to venerate figures in statues rather than focus all their attention on God during the ... • 7. Summary Of The Colossal Statue Of King Lamassu With studying and learning about two different cultures one recognizes the why the art is different. The purposes and details of each figure are both important and allow the figures to stand out as a whole. The Colossal Statue of King Lamassu and Tuthankhamun are both amazing sculptures. The details in each piece are constructed in away that it makes the viewer study each aspect of the figurine. The two statues share some common aspects but they differ from time period, era, structural details, and purpose. Although the two statues are from two different time era and places they share some body and facial aspects. When it comes to the structure of the body of the figures, they both share the detail of being very muscular. The muscles in the legs and knees of both are greatly shown. One can see why the muscles are detailed; with the importance of each figure showing strength provides and portrays power control and dominance. The feet of both sculptures are profound as well. Even though the Lamassu is a winged, bull body figure it has a human head just like Tuthankhamun. They both wear their headpiece and beard. The eye shapes of the statues are similar as well. Both statues are a relief carving which is only carved on one side. The sizes of the statues are over 10ft tall. The Lamassu is 17ft while Tuthankhamun is 15ft tall The two have a few things in common but more differences. The biggest difference that is noticeable just by looking at both figures is that the Lamassu ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Venus Mystery Research Paper Giovanna Schelosky Biological Anthropology Professor Vogel Saddleback College The Venus Mystery The Venus figurines are a collection of 144 known statuettes from the Paleolithic era representing women. They have been found in many different places including Europe, Siberia and even the Mediterranean outside of Italy. These figurines are mainly constructed from different medias such as bone, steatite, calcite and limestone. Those figurines are also considered one of the earliest known work of the Paleolithic era. It's not exactly known what the cultural meaning or purpose behind the statuettes is. However, it's frequently suggested that they might have been used during rituals or served as a symbolic function. During my research for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Delporte distinguished them in five different groups based in their geographic location. Although they were originated in so many different areas, all the statuettes carry the same main characteristics such as big hips and small heads and pointed feet. Some of them also carry big breasts, hips, thighs and vulva. There's no face and in most of them arms and legs are absent. Surprisingly the name "Venus" given to those statuettes has no connection with the Roman Goddess Venus but since they carry such feminine traces and resemblance, they are considered a representation of a female goddess by some. I was very interesting to see how even with all the similarities they carry, some of them resemble a pregnant women and some don't. The different sizes and measurements they can be found in reminds me how each women is different from one another and if in the future they are indeed rediscovered as the representation of the same goddess, it will be interesting to see and study how every area pictured them ... • 11. The Egyptian World Throughout the Egyptian world, embalmers worked to preserve the inner life force that was thought to reside within the body after death. It was common belief that by completing a seventy day process known as mummification, the Ka, this spiritual entity, would be able to live on long after the person died. Because of this, many people of the culture lived modest lives on Earth, saving immense amounts of money and gold for intricate objects that could serve practical and decorative purposes for their tombs. Every step of the preparations was handled with meticulous care as it was believed that life on Earth was limited, while life in the afterlife was eternal. This cultural ideology of eternal life after death is emulated by the statuary of the Egyptian world–especially by the granite pair statue of Nefu and Khemet–setju from Giza, which was found in 1931 on the Harvard University– Museum of Fine Arts Expedition. During the Old Kingdom, artists worked to form statues that could accompany the body within the tomb, and if necessary, serve as alternative dwellings for the Ka.The pair statue, which was created between 2455 BC and 2350 BC in the Fifth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, was likely created for this reason. One can identify the gender of the figures by recognizing how Egyptian artists typically depicted males with darker skin than women. This common practice along with the residual red paint on the body of the figure at the right, allows one to conclude that the person on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Catalhuyuk Women Analysis Part 1: During the 1960's an archeological dig conducted by James Mellaart took place in what is now modern day Turkey. Mellaart was just one of many archeologists who wanted to understand the civilizations of the Neolithic age, and Catalhuyuk (an early civilization which lived in what is now modern day Turkey) in particular. The dig led to a discovery of multiple female figurines made from baked clay called Venus figurines. These figurines were most likely created around 5,000 B.C.E. Part 2: The Venus figurines could have been made to express the way the Catalhuyuk people viewed women. Considering how plentiful the figurines are, historians can infer that women were most likely worshipped. Women in the Catalhuyuk civilization could have been worshipped for many reasons. They were capable of pregnancy which people may have thought connected them to the earth. If they had a direct connection to the earth, they were goddesses or special beings which would have be celebrated and praised. Because religion played such a huge part in their everyday lives, perhaps the people created the figurines to call upon the earth goddesses for rain, crops, or protection from illness. Looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This change could have been due to the rise of agriculture. The rise of agriculture meant that men didn't have to hunt for food and women didn't have to gather food. Naturally the men decided that women were too weak to participate in farming so the gender roles began to become imbalanced. The women, not having to participate in food production were now viewed purely as tools for expanding their population. Because the clock never ticked back in time, women still remain unequal to men this day. If women could have played a part in the agricultural revolution, would gender roles would be more ... • 15. Essay on The Statues of Rahotep and Nefert The Statues of Rahotep and Nefert The first thing that strikes an observer of these two statues is the excellent condition they are in. The paint on the two figures, Rahotep and Nefert, is extremely well preserved and there is only a miniscule amount of perceptible damage. Rahotep, who is seated on the left, retains the air of nobility and grandeur that a king's son and high priest would have undoubtedly enjoyed during his lifetime. His wife, Nefert, sits adorned with an intricate wig and headband that match her bright jewelry and indicate her elevated social status. Together, the figures complement each other perfectly and provide a valuable glimpse into the world of non–royal funerary art of Ancient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rahotep wears a very plain kilt and a small amulet around his neck. He has close–cropped hair and his face is adorned with a thin mustache. He has broad shoulders and muscular arms and it is worth noting that his right arm is held across his chest while his left rests on his thigh. In this respect he resembles Djoser, but the horizontally held arm goes out of fashion later in the Fourth Dynasty. The biggest contrast between Rahotep and his wife is the color of his skin, which is almost the color of clay. In the majority of limestone statues, the husband is portrayed as having much darker skin than his wife has. This is probably due to the fact that men spent more time outside and wore less than women. A similar style is apparent in ancient wall paintings from Thera, Greece that are housed in the Athens Archaeological Museum. In them, the men are portrayed as either red or brown while the women are snow white. Nefert wears a shoulder–length wig and ornate headband decorated with symmetrical designs. The sculptor paid great attention to details, as her real hair and the straps from her dress can be told apart from the wig and her robe. Nefert's nipples also protrude from her bosom and only one of her hands is visible. The other hand, much like most of Nefert's body, seems to mold with the dress which itself molds with the chair. This Canopic Jar was made in Egypt during the dynasty XXVI, 664–525 B.C. It was made from limestone. The jar was masterfully carved from stone and subsequently painted over. It is a historical masterpiece and it is relatively in good condition. Such stone jars were used to house the organs of the deceased. Their organs were put in these canopic jars during the mummification process. The lids of these stone jars have a human face. The faces were carved to represent the four sons of the god Horus. The three– dimensional jar is solid and quite large. It is well displayed in a spacious environment. The lid of the jar is organic due to the life–like face that stares back at the viewer. The rest of the jar is cylindrical with graceful proportions. The size of the jar interpenetrates with the surrounding space. It turns in space and it was meant to be viewed from several points of view. Its cylindrical nature makes the viewer's eye wander all around its form to take in its splendor. Contour lines have been used to make the gentle outline of the jar, giving it a closed silhouette. The dominant linear elements have been incised on the surface of the jar. Beautifully crafted hieroglyphic inscriptions can be seen on the middle of the jar. The contour outline of the jar makes it have a volumetric presence. There are traces of ... As I walked up the massive stone steps, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I was overwhelmed by how enormous the building was and how small I was in comparison. I was overcome with a sense that I was about to witness something much larger than myself. Once I walked inside, I stared up to the large vaulted ceilings and to the long corridors full of masses of people admiring the history in front of their eyes. There is an all–encompassing sense of cultural importance standing in the lobby. The value of what I was about to experience was global and proven in the many languages available for tours. Comparing The Chacmool With The Woman Of Willendorf TAJH RAY Art 150–501 Fall 2016 Research Paper Prof. D Gaffney mars and venus: comparing the chacmool with the woman of willendorf Modern figurines of art stem directly from the hands of the ancient's. The organic forms of modernly sculpted artifacts can most likely be directly referenced to the movements of prehistoric artworks. There seems to be an ongoing transition on how cultures no matter how stretched apart through time, contrasted by ethnicity or religious views; can all be somewhat related to each other by the methods or principles portrayed through their artworks. In fact, I saw that very transition; within two works in which are extremely different in meaning, craftsmanship, time, culture and so on. However, I was still able to find similarities within the artifacts. In this paper I will examine Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic carving in limestone; which can fit in the palm of one's hand. As well as, The Sacrifice of Chacmool, which are a plethora of Mesoamerican statues emulating rituals of sacrifice. The Chacmool figures are always portrayed with their heads looking at their sides and their backs to the ground, upon their stomachs are bowls in which people would place offerings to the gods. The Chacmool's primary function was to hold offerings for rituals; the offerings would range from common foods to human organs. Archeologist suggests that the figures were found in ruins of the ancient cities Teotihuacan and Tula. They suggest that the works ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The collection involves figurines from Mesoamerica, South America, and Central America, bringing a variety of cultures to the focus. Despite the lack of words, each figurine provides a background story surrounding each culture. Each figurine is placed in a section that depicts what the figurine is supposed to represent. Looking at the figurine, one can see that the artist placed two heads onto the body and it is supposed to represent the growing life within. Going further down the list, the figurines become a bit more childlike in how they were crafted, the ones from Maya, El Salvador are examples of the childlike facial structures. The figures from Guanacaste–Nicoya, Costa Rica look the least similar to the other figurines in the collection. It was excavated from a tomb in in Giza. The statuette displays a male and female standing side by side. It measures about less than two feet high. It appears as a relief because of the space between the arms and waists of the figures and sculpted from a block and chiseled away. She tries to refute the author's opinion by using some cogent reasons. First, the first theory argues that the carved stone balls used as weapons in hunting and fighting. On the other hand, the lecturer cast doubt on this theory by stating that the weapons used in the Neolithic period showed signs of wear; they are often found cracked and broken, but the carved stone balls are well preserved. It can be explained as a diverse building up of mortal activities. Art is the single thing that can change people by the thousands, millions, and billions. If we were to use words to describe exactly what art is we can say that it is: expression, beauty, different, love, technical, abstract, creativity, always changing, convincing, emotion, free, diverse, innovative and inspiring. Starting with Prehistoric art leading to the periods of Early Medieval and the Romanesque. Then when looking deeper at the art pieces created throughout the centuries, something that stood out to me was how people were depicted and idealized. Starting with the prehistoric art period, where there is only a few miniature sculptures that depict women and men of that time. Then when looking at the Romanesque and Medieval art pieces, the human body is more stylized and depicted differently. When looking at these types of aspects, it makes me think about today and how people are either admired or judged for their beauty and body image. Within this paper, I will be focusing on the major art periods that we learned and explain how people were physically depicted and idealized, and reflect on how it is still seen today, within society and their standards. Starting with the Prehistoric period, where some of the earliest art images were created, people were depicted in miniature sculptures and ceramic pieces. They were usually created small enough where people could hold them in their hands and carry them around from place to place. Then when looking at pieces like these, they would generally give basic depictions of characteristics within facial features, while the humanly shape was something they focused more on. In the beginning of the novel she is depicted as someone who could be considered as being weak and is portrayed as Eugene's possession; someone who is quiet, submissive and obedient and who always speaks in gentle, soothing and calm tones. Beatrice refuses to speak up against Eugene's violence, and even though she does not condone nor accept the violence, she does not feel as though she can leave such an affluent, socially influential and well respected man. All of this adds to the portrayal of Beatrice as being weak and submissive. However, towards the end of the novel, after many beatings and a number of miscarriages brought on by these beatings, Beatrice realises that she needs to stand up to her husband to protect her children and to protect herself, and so she slowly starts to plan Eugene's ultimate demise. Does Morley Promote Laziness Being lazy tends to have a negative connotation, but Morley takes a different stance and challenges his readers to uphold laziness as one of the true means to become happy. Morley is similar to a salesman, as he promotes his product, laziness, in hopes of gaining the attention and support of others. Like many salesmen, Morley has a catch. By concealing his satirical viewpoint, he is able to distract his audience and continue to promote laziness undetected. Masking this satire, Morley diverts the attention of his audience by incorporating model figures and reinterpreting conventional knowledge to promote laziness. • 72. Ancient Greek Art And Its Impact On Ancient Greece Ancient Greek art has been one of the most influential art forms in the past centuries. The Keros sculptures predominantly stand out while referring to the ancient Greek scluptures and art. The Keros sculptures were carved purely out of marble and were a form of Cycladic art that was created in a small island called Cyclades in 2600–2400 B.C. The Cycladic Islands of Greece are set in the Aegean Sea. The ancient Greeks called these islands the kyklades, a scattered kyklos, or circle, of islands around the holy island and sanctuary of Apollo, Delos. The very first Keros sculpture was founded in the year 1963 by Lord Renfrew. The only unfortunate event that occurred during excavation was that almost none of these Keros sculptures were found in their complete form. Only fragments of these sculptures remained. It has been noticed, that all through history, the Keros scultpures have been incrediblly difficult to analyze and interpret due to lack of background information and it's obvious missing parts. There is even debate about whether the figures were meant to lie flat or to stand against a wall––there is no definitive evidence either way. Numerous explanations about the significance of the figurines have been proposed: the figurines may have been apotropaic (i.e., to ward off evil) or served as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I believe that the stomach was actually used to show pregnancy, and portrays the woman as a maternal figure, or simply, "Mother Earth." The Venus of Willendorf was found in 1908 by a workman named "Johann Veran" (Selen). It was found by archeologists at a Paleolithic site. It portrayed the woman as being the care giver of life, and it showed her as something everyone looked up to, either for riturals or as a figurine of fertility. It began with the Greeks, using the form of art to display idealism, then the Romans continued to practice the art to display realism. The Greeks and the Romans used the art of statuary similarly to represent their people in the form of a permanent piece of art. Their similarities in their pieces include the materials they used, such as bronze, as bronze, stone, metals and some marble.
