2. What is Postmodernism
Postmodernism describes both an era and a broad
movement that developed in the mind to late
20thcentury across philosophy, the arts, architecture,
and criticism which marked a departure of modernism
3. Postmodernism in
documentary (Main)
As we did not expose any of the film making process on our documentary for
example we did not show the filming equipment or asking questions before the
interviewees answer so that it confirm our product is not a postmodern as our
product is aiming for realism but not to the extent of cinema verite (even though
looked at it in research), therefore it is more of a technical realism.
However, we can apply a postmodern reading from Baudrillard as he said‘Every
time we try to capture reality, we destroy it’. Even though we don’t expose the
construction of our production, we can apply a postmodern reading to the way in
which we construct reality.
We have made a conscious choice to use recording equipment (Lapel Mic) which
cut out background noise, therefore we didn’t capture the ambient sound of
London so the audio for the interview was constructed.
4. We have constructed the lighting by using the lighting equipment such as
the Patterson light to give out better highlights as well as cinematic style
to the film.
Although we have film in the Solo theatre in London and a studio in
Nottingham, which gives out realism to our topics as it relates to the
creative industry. However we have constructed the reality by choosing
the location when we were working on the planning stage, this has
against the reality as we have planned it before we went to these
locations.
During the editing stage we have edited all the footage and choose the
questions that we think it can gives out the view on the reward and
hardship of the industry, which would be able to give more information to
the audience. Moreover we have edited the light and the audio to form a
narrative from hardship to reward, which suggests that everything in our
documentary is constructed.
5. Postmodernism in
documentary (Poster)
On our focal image there is an artist who is opening the
curtain and ready to perform, with cinematic style as the
silhouette connotes the reward and hardship of the
industry. Also we have adjusted the picture into slightly
darker with more shadow as well as adding small amount
of red layer, so that it confirms the construction on the
poster: the artist will not normally open the curtain before
the performance.
Our model has dressed in costume which suggests the
construction due to the topics of the film.
As our production is about the theatre industry, so that by
showing ‘backstage’ of the industry, it is showing the
constructed nature of all entertainment forms.
6. Postmodernism in documentary
(Radio Advert)
Similar to the poster, on the radio advert we have edited the audio with
combining them together. We have also used a better microphone to record
the voiceover, so that it gives out clear and better sound quality to the audience
and therefore confirms the construction on our radio advert.
Postmodernism advertising tend to be more interesting and to entertain the
audience, therefore as we have used a simplistic style which only involved a
voiceover and the voice of the interviewees, we could perhaps add a diegetic
sound of a performance or artists practicing which will be able to follow the
constructed nature of our product.
However, we did not remove any background noise from the interview as it can
clearly hear the noise from Genesis’s interview, so it could be argued that we
expose the construction here and our product is more postmodern, in itself.
