1. Before creating my ancillary texts, I did extensive research into already
existing products in order to be inspired and possibly incorporate certain aspects into
my own work. This helped me a lot as it allowed me to decide the most conventional
features to include in my own product.
I began looking strictly at Indie Rock artists (such as Feeder) but later
branched out to all genres as I believed that this would allow me to see common
conventions included in them all. However, I mostly focused on the Indie Rock genre as
that is my target audience.
I eventually chose four promotional posters which inspired me the most.
These were Feeder’s magazine advertisement, Lana Del Rey’s magazine
advertisement, HAIM’s magazine advertisement and Marina and the Diamond’s
magazine advertisement.
Three of these advertisements were female artists whereas only one was
male. I did this because my performer is female. I wanted to create a conventional
product and I believe that this was more achievable by focusing on female products
and noting their common conventions.
2. Renegades – Feeder
This magazine advertisement is very
basic. I was inspired by this
advertisement as I liked it’s use of
colour. It is also very easy to read
which is conventional for my target
audience. However, the colour did
not influence me much as I am still
choosing to work with black and
white. I was influenced by the layout
of this poster and the information it
gives (website URL).
3. Lana Del Rey Poster
This magazine advertisement has
all been drawn. Although I do not
plan on doing this, I am
influenced by the use of editing
and layout. I would like to use
something similar to the ripped
paper as I think this is engaging to
my audience as it seems as if they
are almost seeing something
secret. I am also influenced by the
use of song titles across the
background of the artist,
however, I do not think I will
adapt that into my work.
4. HAIM Poster
This magazine advertisement is very
conventional. It is very easy to read and
would therefore be very conventional
for my audience. I like the use of bold
text and limited colours. As I plan to
make my products black and white, I am
very influenced by this product. I am
influenced by the use of filtering as the
same colour continues in the text.
Although it is not an album
advertisement, I am still very influenced
by this and believe I will be able to
adapt certain aspects into my own
work.
5. The Family Jewels –
Marina & The Diamonds
I am very influenced by this
product. I like the use of editing
and filters as it makes it much
more engaging for the audience.
Although I have already decided on
what font I will use, I like this font
as it is iconic to this artist and I
would like to create the same
effect with mine. I also like this
product as it advertises the singles
to the audience. I plan to adapt
certain conventions from this into
my own work.
