Portulaca, also known as purslane, is a succulent herbaceous plant scientifically known as Portulaca oleraceae. It is a cosmopolitan weed cultivated in South-East Asia, with its center of diversity in Mexico and Australia. The economic parts are the leaves and young shoots, which are rich in ascorbic acid, carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. However, excessive consumption is not recommended due to oxalic acid and nitrate content.
