People Can’t Live Without It Anymore
Social networking service may negatively affect a person’s behavior. Forms of such things like instant messaging and chat rooms are called social networking service, also known as ‘SNS.’ SNS shifted the way people communicate, but also affects behavior negatively. Nevertheless, since people live in the world where every single word is sent by technology, living without it seems impossible. The issue is, do e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, and other forms of online communication bring people closer together? All three sources answer “No.” Even though modern technology makes people’s life better, it slowly enslaves them little by little; people can’t live without it anymore. The three sources take up the position that social networking service affects people’s behavior negatively, although with three different perspectives.
First of all, the issue of negative effect of technology on communication is viewed by Susan Tardanico from the sociological perspective. Impact on interpersonal communication is the most prominent negative effect of technology on communication and lack of interpersonal communication has reduced the nonverbal grasping power of individuals. Susan Tardanico argues that increased frequency of communication through texting and chatting cause lack of the ability to express the ideas and emotions to others face-to-face. People use their nonverbal cues, such as a smile or a frown when they communicate with others face-to-face and this is another layer of communication. But technology doesn’t allow people to catch these sorts of nonverbal cues. This leads people to misunderstand the actual meaning of what others intend to say (“Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication?”). Overall, Susan Tardanico emphasizes technology causes lack of interpersonal communication. The evidence she uses to support her thesis does support her sociological perspective. For example, she writes, “With 93% of our communication context stripped away, we are now attempting to forge relationships and make decisions based on phrases. Abbreviations. Snippets. Emoticons. Which may or may not be accurate representations of the truth” (Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication?). For such sociological reasons, author’s position is satisfactorily explained. Moreover, the issue of anxiety disorder was reported by CBS Seattle from the psychological perspective. Although the study of effective communication practices dates back to such ancient scholars as Aristotle and Cicero, communication as a separate field of study is relatively modern, propelled in part by interest in twentieth-century advances in electronic communications. Scholars look at particular combinations of people communicating with each other in specific contexts. Our readings this week in the
Encyclopedia of Communication Theory
tell us the resulting theories can be categorized according to
communication
context
:
intrapersonal communication focuses largely on our cognitive abilities;
interpersonal communication addresses the communication between dyads and triads (two-three people);
group communication deals with small group interactions;
organizational communication addresses communication across organizations;
public/rhetorical communication examines face-to-face communication to a large group of listeners;
mass/mediated communication encompasses messages produced for mass or mediated audiences; and
intercultural communication looks at communication among people of different cultures.
Some researchers also specialize in gender communication, which focuses on communication issues of women and between the sexes, health communication, and computer-mediated communication.
Whatever the context, most scholars agree there are
five facets

to establish and interpret

in their

Learning with technology as coordinated sociomaterial practice: digital liter...
While considerable attention has been given to the concept of learning – what it is, how we might know it when we see it, and how to intervene in it – by contrast, technology remains under-theorised. While theoretical approaches that have developed accounts of the relationship between technology and human action, few of these are well represented within educational technology or networked learning. This paucity of theorisation has resulted in simplistic accounts of the role of technology in various kinds of learning, usually involving some kind of causal or determining mechanism. Such accounts are vulnerable to critique (e.g. Friesen, 2009), but nonetheless remain prevalent.
In this paper, I will recap some of the problems with this position, and then consider alternatives that address issues around agency and the role of the social. Specifically, drawing on Mol’s concept of praxiology, developed in the context of work on the constitution of diseases in medical practice, I will explore alternative ways in which educational uses of technology can be understood. This value of this will be illustrated through the design of a study of digital literacies. Some implications of this include for researchers – including concerns about reflexivity – will then be drawn out.

Can you think of an issue that has important implications for your own life? Perhaps it is a university proposal to raise tuition, a plan to change requirements in your major, or even a proposal to ban using cell phones while driving.
Now think of an issue that has little impact on your day-to-day routines. This could be a proposal to strengthen the graduation requirements in a city school, or a plan to use a different weed spray in farming communities.
You will certainly process the first issues differently than the second.
Different persuasive appeals are likely to be effective in these two circumstances as well.

The topics cited differ in their level of personal involvement, or the degree to which they are perceived to be personally relevant to individuals.
Individuals are high in involvement when they perceive that an issue is personally relevant or bears directly on their own lives.
They are low in involvement when they believe that an issue has little or no impact on their own lives.
Motivation to Process
The ELM stipulates that when individuals are high in involvement, they will be motivated to engage in issue-relevant thinking.
They will recognize that it is in their best interest to consider the arguments in the message carefully.
Even if they oppose the position advocated in the message, they may change their attitudes if the arguments are sufficiently compelling to persuade them that they will benefit by adopting the advocated position.
Under high involvement, people should process messages through the central route, systematically scrutinizing message arguments.
Motivation to Process
By contrast, under low involvement, people have little motivation to focus on message arguments.
The issue is of little personal consequence; therefore, it doesn’t pay to spend much time thinking about the message.
As a result, people look for mental shortcuts to help them decide whether to accept the communicator’s position.
They process the message peripherally, unconcerned with the substance of the communication.

In order to discover if these hypotheses were correct, researchers tested them empirically (Petty, Cacioppo, Goldman; 1981)

Text Messaging and Conflict Resolution: What Does That Emoticon Mean?
Dan: What do you think; is text messaging a viable means for conflict resolution?
World: No, text messaging is for short messages only, not confrontations or debate.
Dan: I agree that was the intended purpose, but it has progressed over time. What are people using it for now?
World: According to a survey in 2004, people are asking questions and sending reminders, not having conversations (Faulkner).
Dan: From my research in 2010, I’ve found the most common uses to be event planning and gossip/casual conversation, categories with a “back and forth.”
World: Argh, I’ll give you that. But what about people using texting as a security blanket? It’s destroying the closeness of mankind! (Pressner)
Dan: What about people using texting for “romantic interactions?” And who’s to say people can’t be close over non-verbal communications?
World: Or what about the fact that it’s difficult for people to get their meaning across in text? (Pressner)

World: Well, like what?
That is the question. In my daily life, text messaging is a core component of my communications with others. I use it for everything from planning events to casual conversation and getting help on homework; but I also use it to flesh out issues with my partner and others close to me. Recently, I have wondered why we have turned to text messaging for the majority of our conflicts. Prior to doing outside research, I created a few theories as to why, for some, text messaging is a more accessible means of conflict resolution. Due to text messaging’s limit of 160 characters, people have to make their arguments concise and to the point. It might also be easier for people who are shy, since they have time to formulate what they want to say, instead of feeling intimidated by a face-to-face conversation.
To see how texting can be used, we must first look at how it has been used. A 2004 study at London South Bank University examined who used texting, and why. Their results showed that those who are younger tend to send and receive a greater number of messages than those who are older (Faulkner). The study also looked at what kinds of messages were sent and found that the majority of texts were asking questions, sending farewells, and sending personal information.
In order to gain a broader perspective, I conducted my own study, in the form of an online survey. There were a total of 389 responses. After analyzing the data, and comparing it to Faulkner’s survey, there are drastic differences. The first is the percentage who text. According t.

Understanding knowledge network, learning and connectivism
Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism and other growing theories such as Actor-Network and Connectivism are circulating in the educational field. For each, there are allies who stand behind research evidence and consistency of observation. Meantime, those existing theories dominate the field until the background is changed or new concrete evidence proves their insufficiencies. Connectivists claim that the background or the general climate has recently changed: a new generation of researchers, connectivists propose a new way of conceiving knowledge. According to them, knowledge is a network and learning is a process of exploring this network. Other researchers find this notion either not clear or not new and probably, with no effect in the education field. This paper addresses a foggy understanding of knowledge defined as a network and the lack of resources talking about this topic. Now think of an issue that has little impact on your day-to-day routines. This could be a proposal to strengthen the graduation requirements in a city school, or a plan to use a different weed spray in farming communities.

The topics cited differ in their level of personal involvement, or the degree to which they are perceived to be personally relevant to individuals.
Individuals are high in involvement when they perceive that an issue is personally relevant or bears directly on their own lives.
They are low in involvement when they believe that an issue has little or no impact on their own lives.
Motivation to Process
The ELM stipulates that when individuals are high in involvement, they will be motivated to engage in issue-relevant thinking.
They will recognize that it is in their best interest to consider the arguments in the message carefully.
Even if they oppose the position advocated in the message, they may change their attitudes if the arguments are sufficiently compelling to persuade them that they will benefit by adopting the advocated position.
Under high involvement, people should process messages through the central route, systematically scrutinizing message arguments.
Motivation to Process
By contrast, under low involvement, people have little motivation to focus on message arguments.
The issue is of little personal consequence; therefore, it doesn’t pay to spend much time thinking about the message.
As a result, people look for mental shortcuts to help them decide whether to accept the communicator’s position.
They process the message peripherally, unconcerned with the substance of the communication.

Text Messaging and Conflict Resolution: What Does That Emoticon Mean?
Dan: What do you think; is text messaging a viable means for conflict resolution?
World: No, text messaging is for short messages only, not confrontations or debate.
Dan: I agree that was the intended purpose, but it has progressed over time. What are people using it for now?
World: According to a survey in 2004, people are asking questions and sending reminders, not having conversations (Faulkner).
Dan: From my research in 2010, I’ve found the most common uses to be event planning and gossip/casual conversation, categories with a “back and forth.”
World: Argh, I’ll give you that. But what about people using texting as a security blanket? It’s destroying the closeness of mankind! (Pressner)
Dan: What about people using texting for “romantic interactions?” And who’s to say people can’t be close over non-verbal communications?
World: Or what about the fact that it’s difficult for people to get their meaning across in text? (Pressner)

World: Well, like what?
That is the question. In my daily life, text messaging is a core component of my communications with others. I use it for everything from planning events to casual conversation and getting help on homework; but I also use it to flesh out issues with my partner and others close to me. Recently, I have wondered why we have turned to text messaging for the majority of our conflicts. Prior to doing outside research, I created a few theories as to why, for some, text messaging is a more accessible means of conflict resolution. Due to text messaging’s limit of 160 characters, people have to make their arguments concise and to the point. It might also be easier for people who are shy, since they have time to formulate what they want to say, instead of feeling intimidated by a face-to-face conversation.
To see how texting can be used, we must first look at how it has been used. A 2004 study at London South Bank University examined who used texting, and why. Their results showed that those who are younger tend to send and receive a greater number of messages than those who are older (Faulkner). The study also looked at what kinds of messages were sent and found that the majority of texts were asking questions, sending farewells, and sending personal information.
In order to gain a broader perspective, I conducted my own study, in the form of an online survey. There were a total of 389 responses. After analyzing the data, and comparing it to Faulkner’s survey, there are drastic differences. The first is the percentage who text. According t.

Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism and other growing theories such as Actor-Network and Connectivism are circulating in the educational field. For each, there are allies who stand behind research evidence and consistency of observation. Meantime, those existing theories dominate the field until the background is changed or new concrete evidence proves their insufficiencies. Connectivists claim that the background or the general climate has recently changed: a new generation of researchers, connectivists propose a new way of conceiving knowledge. According to them, knowledge is a network and learning is a process of exploring this network. Other researchers find this notion either not clear or not new and probably, with no effect in the education field. This paper addresses a foggy understanding of knowledge defined as a network and the lack of resources talking about this topic. Motorola, Inc., fired its CFO, Paul Liska, in January for a number of reasons related to his performance as stated by Motorola. Liska has filed a suit against Motorola for the conditions of his dismissal.
