When did you learn English?
Player Interviews
We asked seven big names, including Didier Drogba and
Petr Cech, for their opinions about life in England and
learning English. Find out what they said. For each of the
questions, there’s an exercise to test your comprehension.

Before you watch
Close your eyes and think about your first ever English lesson.


How old were you?



Where were you?



Who was your teacher? What was he/she like?



How did you feel?



What did you learn?

Now tell your partner about what you can remember?

When did you learn English?
Activity 2 - Watch again
Which of these statements could be true for you? Compare your language learning experience with a
partner.


“When you live in the country, you have to speak.”



“I started learning in school when I was twelve or thirteen,”



“I learned good English in school and then when I travelled I started to speak better, because I
think language is not only about learning. It’s about talking to people, and about living here, you
always get better and better.”



“I had an English course every week for two hours Thursday was the best day for me.”



“I feel much more comfortable now with English, I can do interviews, I can express myself, really
… say what I want, and hopefully not make any big mistakes.”



“You go to the cinema and you see the films.”

Look at these different ways of learning English. Think about advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Question:

When did you learn English?

Aims

To raise awareness of techniques for learning English outside the classroom.

1. Before you watch
Ask the students to close their eyes and think about their first ever English lesson. While their eyes are
closed, read out the prompts and any others that you think are relevant/apply to the situation in your
teaching country.
Ask students to share their memories with a partner and then share feedback as a class.
2. Watch
Tell the students they are going to watch the players talk about when they learnt English. Watch the 6
answers to the question straight through and ask students what they heard – was there anything they’d
talked about?
Now watch again and match the players with the summaries of their comments.
Answers
a – 2 & 6 (Kuyt & Ingimarsson) b – 3 & 6 (Mido & Ingimarsson) c - 3 & 5 (Mido & Cech) d - 4 & 5
(Gilberto & Cech) e 6 (Ingimarsson) f 1 (Drogba)
3. Watch again
Hand out worksheet 2. Ask students to look at the sentences from the video and talk to a partner about
whether they have done those things or not and how they found them.
Then ask Ss to work in pairs to fill in the table. Feedback as a class.
