EMV chip technology provides greater security than magnetic stripes and has significantly reduced card fraud worldwide. It creates a unique code for each transaction, making it harder for thieves to clone cards. As more merchants upgrade terminals to accept EMV chips, liability for fraudulent transactions shifts from card issuers to merchants if they do not accept chip cards. This encourages US merchants to upgrade and help reduce the country's high rate of counterfeit card fraud, which accounts for 47% of the global total.
This document answers common questions about EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) chip card technology. It explains that EMV uses computer chips in cards to generate unique codes for each transaction, making the cards more secure than magnetic stripe cards. It also notes that over half of US merchants have adopted EMV-enabled payment terminals since a 2015 fraud liability shift. The document clarifies that while some EMV cards are contactless, EMV technology itself does not require contactless capability. It outlines that liability for fraudulent transactions falls on the party that is least compliant with EMV standards, whether that is the card issuer or merchant. Merchants can work with their credit card processors to implement an EMV solution.
In this recorded webinar, we shed some light on the myths vs. the truths about EMV. Our payment experts address common misconceptions and provide answers to questions, such as:
- What is EMV?
- How does EMV security work?
- What does it take to become EMV-ready?
- Does EMV ensure PCI compliance?
- When is the migration deadline?
- What happens after the migration deadline?

This document outlines Coowry's proposal to use mobile airtime as a new form of digital cash to enable micropayments. It notes that while the digital economy enables small transactions, current payment tools are not well-suited for transactions under $1. Coowry's solution would allow people to purchase digital goods and services, make donations, send gifts, and engage in peer-to-peer transfers using airtime credits. This would remove commissions and barriers to include the 70% of people without access to traditional financial tools. Examples of use cases including purchasing digital content, donations, gifts, and e-commerce purchases are described.
The document discusses the benefits of merchants migrating to EMV chip technology for credit and debit card transactions. It notes that by October 2015, liability for counterfeit fraud will shift to the party that is not EMV compliant, likely resulting in increased costs for merchants who have not migrated. The document outlines the business case for merchants to migrate to EMV chips, including reducing customer churn by meeting rising customer expectations, decreasing card decline rates, and avoiding increased liability for fraud that may occur if merchants have not migrated by the liability shift date. It also notes additional benefits like being able to accept new payment methods like contactless and mobile payments that use EMV as the underlying standard.

The document discusses EMV chip technology and how it provides more secure payment processing compared to magnetic stripe cards. It explains the basics of EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) chips, how they work, and why the US is shifting to require their use. Merchants are advised to upgrade their point of sale systems and payment processors to be EMV compliant by a liability shift deadline of October 2015, after which they will be responsible for fraudulent transactions if they do not accept EMV chip cards. EMV is a credit card security technology that uses microchips in smart cards instead of magnetic strips. It will soon be required for US merchants as a liability shift takes effect in October 2015, where processors will hold merchants responsible for fraud losses if they cannot accept EMV chip cards. Merchants need to upgrade their payment terminals to ones that are EMV-compliant by this deadline, especially those in high risk industries like gas stations which have until 2017. It is advised that merchants begin planning for this transition as soon as possible to budget for new equipment in 2014.
EMV is a credit card security technology that uses microchips in smart cards instead of magnetic strips. It will soon be required for all US merchants. EMV provides increased security by generating unique transaction codes to prevent fraud. Starting in 2015, merchants will be liable for chargebacks if customers use magnetic strip cards instead of chip-enabled cards. All merchants should upgrade their payment terminals to EMV-compatible systems by the liability shift deadline.
How will EMV Affect Me, & What Should I do, Michigan Parking AssociationAndrew Vidor
EMV is a global standard for credit and debit card payments using chip technology that provides more security than magnetic stripe cards. By October 2015, merchants that cannot accept EMV chip cards may be liable for fraudulent transactions. To avoid this, merchants should implement EMV-enabled payment terminals or systems that can accept chip cards with or without a PIN. This requires evaluating costs and risks to decide whether upgrading existing payment systems is worthwhile. Resources are available to help merchants with the EMV implementation process.

3) While 3D Secure reduces fraud, some countries still experience high costs of billions from card-not-present fraud each year, showing the ongoing need to implement secure online payment solutions.
This document outlines steps to test payment gateway functionality, including:
1. Gathering test credit card numbers and sandbox accounts for testing.
2. Understanding integration between payment gateway and application and testing parameters passed between them.
3. Checking successful retrieval of payment data by the application and error handling.
4. Verifying database entries for transactions, amounts, and errors.
5. Ensuring security measures are in place for transactions.
EMV technology has been slowly rolling out in the US, but many merchants with EMV-capable terminals are not yet accepting chip cards. Some reasons for the delay include merchants not wanting to take on the costs and effort of training customers, or going through certification for upgraded terminals. However, as the liability shift has occurred, small businesses especially could see more chargebacks if criminals take advantage of merchants still accepting swipes. While EMV transactions take longer, the security benefits outweigh the potential costs of fraud. Merchants need to enable their EMV terminals to protect themselves now that they are liable for disputes.
An ATM, or automated teller machine, allows customers to access their bank accounts and perform transactions without a human bank teller. Customers insert their debit or credit card and enter their PIN to access their accounts. Using an ATM, customers can withdraw cash, check balances, transfer funds between accounts, and perform other banking tasks. ATMs are connected to financial networks so customers can access their funds from machines not owned by their bank. Estimates show there are over 2.2 million ATMs globally, providing convenient banking access.
EMV, or chip card technology, is being adopted in the US to improve payment security. The document discusses EMV standards, how EMV transactions work, and the liability shift occurring for merchants. It also provides details on Payscape's plans to support EMV, including supporting the SwIPe and iProcess POS applications, Ingenico payment devices, and certification with processors like TSYS by August 2015 to help merchants meet the liability shift deadline.
The document discusses India's transition to a cashless society through digital payments. It outlines various digital payment methods like UPI, mobile wallets, debit/credit cards, and Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS). The document summarizes cyber threat trends in 2018 according to a Symantec report. It saw a rise in formjacking attacks that steal payment card data, though cryptojacking activity declined along with cryptocurrency values. Ransomware infections decreased overall but rose for enterprises. Living off the land attacks using tools like PowerShell increased substantially. Targeted attacks grew more sophisticated with groups targeting operational systems and destructive malware.
The FBI is the lead federal agency for investigating malicious cyber activity by criminals, nation-state adversaries, and terrorists. To fulfill this mission, the FBI often develops resources to enhance operations and collaboration. One such resource is the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) which provides the public with a trustworthy and convenient mechanism for reporting information concerning suspected Internet-facilitated criminal activity. At the end of every year, the IC3 collates information collected into an annual report.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC or Commission) is an independent U.S. law enforcement agency charged with protecting consumers and enhancing competition across broad sectors of the economy. The FTC’s primary legal authority comes from Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, which prohibits unfair or deceptive practices in the marketplace. The FTC also has authority to enforce a variety of sector specific laws, including the Truth in Lending Act, the CAN-SPAM Act, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and the Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act. This broad authority allows the Commission
to address a wide array of practices affecting consumers, including those that emerge with the development of new technologies and business models.
Sentinel sorts consumer reports into 29 top categories. Appendices B1 – B3 describe the categories, providing details, and three year figures. To reflect marketplace changes, new categories or subcategories are created or deleted over time. The Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book excludes the National Do Not Call Registry. A separate report about these complaint statistics is available at: https://www.ftc.gov/reports/national-do-not-call-registry-data-book-fiscal-year-2018. The Sentinel Data Book also excludes reports about unsolicited commercial email.Consumers can report as much or as little detail as they wish when they file a report. For the Sentinel Data Book graphics, percentages are based on the total number of Sentinel fraud, identity theft, and other report types in 2018 in which consumers provided the information displayed on each chart.Reports to Sentinel sometimes indicate money was lost, and sometimes indicate no money was lost.Often, people make these reports after they experience something problematic in the marketplace, avoid losing any money, and wish to alert others. Except where otherwise stated, numbers are based on reports both from people who indicated a loss and people who did not.Calculations of dollar amounts lost are based on reports in which consumers indicated they lost between $1 and $999,999. Prior to 2017, reported “amount paid” included values of $0 to $999,999.States and Metropolitan Areas are ranked based on the number of reports per 100,000 population.State rankings are based on 2017 U.S. Census population estimates (Annual Estimates of the Resident Population: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2017). Metropolitan Area rankings are based on 2016 U.S. Census population estimates (Annual Estimates of the Resident Population: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2016).This Sentinel Data Book identifies Metropolitan Areas (Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas)with a population of 100,000 or more except where otherwise noted. Metropolitan areas are defined by Office of Management and Budget Bulletin No. 15-01, “Revised Delineations of Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, and Guidance on Uses of the Delineations of These Areas” (July 15, 2015). Numbers change over time. The Sentinel Data Book sorts consumer reports by year, based on the date of the consumer’s report. Some data contributors transfer their complaints to Sentinel after the end of the calendar year, and new data providers often contribute reports from prior years. As a result, the total number of reports for 2018 will likely change during the next few months, and totals from previous years may differ from prior Consumer Sentinel Network Data Books. The report called for medical data breach notification laws and more research about medical identity theft and its impacts. Since that time, medical data breach notification laws have been enacted, and other progress has been made, particularly in the quality of consumer complaint datasets gathered around identity theft, including medical forms of the crime. This report uses new data arising from consumer medical identity theft complaint reporting and medical data breach reporting to analyze and document the geography of medical identity theft and its growth patterns. The report also discusses new aspects of consumer harm resulting from the crime that the data has brought to light

Since 1997, Sentinel has collected tens of millions of reports from consumers about fraud, identity theft, and other consumer protection topics. During 2017, Sentinel received nearly 2.7 million consumer reports, which the FTC has sorted into 30 top categories. The 2017 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book (Sentinel Data Book) has a vibrant new look, and a lot more information about what consumers told us last year. You'll know more about how much money people lost in the aggregate, the median amount they paid, and what frauds were most costly. And you'll know much more about complaints of identity theft, fraud, and other types of problems in each state, too. The Sentinel Data Book is based on unverified reports filed by consumers. The data is not based on a consumer survey. Sentinel has a five-year data retention policy, with reports older than five years purged biannually.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Play It Smart with U.S. Chip Payment Transactions
1. PLAY IT SMART WITH
U.S. CHIP PAYMENT TRANSACTIONS
Chip payment acceptance is rapidly growing worldwide. As the U.S. migrates to an
EMV®-based* infrastructure, T&E merchants are encouraged to start thinking about
the terminal upgrades and specific processes and procedures they may need to support
emerging chip technologies.
This document is intended to provide U.S. hotel, car rental, and restaurant merchants
an overview of EMV technology and guidelines for how to successfully integrate chip
acceptance into their payment processing environment.
Why Chip?
IMPORTANT!
Visa chip cards
also have a magneticstripe on the back to
ensure acceptance
at POS terminals that
do not have a chipreading device.
EMV technology, which can be used in chip cards
or in NFC mobile phones, adds an additional layer
of security to in person transactions by generating a
cryptogram that is unique to each transaction. EMV
technology helps reduce the value of stolen data.
Global market migrations to EMV have proven that
chip technology is an effective tool in combatting
counterfeit fraud.
In addition, the migration to chip technology is
creating a strategic framework that supports
future growth and value for all key stakeholders
in the payment industry. EMV helps prime the
U.S. payment platform for the arrival of mobile
technology as more customers want to simply wave
their mobile devices at a point-of-sale terminal to
make a purchase.
Even though U.S. merchants are not required to
support chip processing, there are advantages for
those who do. By updating their point-of-sale (POS)
systems to accept contact chip payments, merchants
are taking the necessary steps to be ready for the
EMV liability shift which will be instituted in the U.S.
starting October 1, 2015.
Migrating to EMV chip can also help drive
incremental transactions. By moving the U.S. to the
same advanced authentication technology used
widely throughout the world, global acceptance
and authorization should increase (for both US and
foreign cardholders) as issuers should have a greater
confidence in the security of the transactions and
as U.S. travelers experience enhanced acceptance
while traveling abroad. As a result, merchants and
acquirers should see an increase in volume coming
from both domestic and foreign cardholders
Under this global POS counterfeit liability shift,
the party that is the cause of a contact EMV chip
transaction not being conducted (i.e., the issuer, the
merchant’s acquirer or acquirer processor) will be
held financially liable for any resulting card-present
counterfeit card losses.
*Europay, Mastercard®, and Visa® (EMV)
2. How Chip Card Acceptance Works in the U.S.
Chip card acceptance at a T&E merchant POS terminal is similar to the magnetic-stripe card with just a few subtle differences.
Here’s a quick look at a contact chip transaction from start-to-finish. Depending on the equipment setup, either the merchant or the
customer will handle the Visa card during the EMV chip transaction process. The following example assumes that the merchant is
handling the card.
1
Cardholder presents chip
card for T&E purchase.
2
Merchant inserts the chip portion
of the card into the terminal with
the chip facing up. It’s important
to leave the card in the terminal
until the transaction is complete.
If the card is removed too soon,
the transaction will end and the
purchase will not be processed.
3
Merchant follows the prompts
on the terminal’s screen. The
terminal will display the:
• Purchase amount prior to
tip (Restaurant), or
• Estimate of the initial
authorization amount (Hotel
and Car Rental).
4
Merchant:
• Follows terminal prompts and
confirm cardholder verification
as needed. Visa only requires
the support of signature at the
POS. Support of other Cardholder
Verification Methods (CVMs) such
as PIN is optional.
• Removes the card when prompted
to do so.
For EMV chip transactions, the card and
chip-reading device work together to
determine the appropriate cardholder
verification method (e.g., signature, No
Signature Required, or PIN).
• Provides a copy of the receipt to
the customer as is currently done
for magnetic-stripe transactions.
(Receipt practices do not change
with EMV chip transactions).
Handling EMV Chip Transactions in Specific T&E Industries
While chip technology may enable additional services with new cardholder and merchant interfaces, existing T&E chip
transactions should flow through the payment processing system in the exact same way they do today. However, there are a few
new acceptance rules that apply specifically to T&E chip card transactions. On the next page, for your benefit, is a quick reference
chart which provides an overview of the Visa-recommended chip rules for T&E merchants.
Additional Visa Resources for Merchants
Visa offers a number of card acceptance resources as part of its merchant education program. Current publications are available as
downloadable PDF files at http:/
/usa.visa.com/merchants.
