Plastic production in India has increased dramatically from 1950 to 2017, with total production now at over 15,000 tons per day. Plastic causes several environmental and health issues, including ocean pollution, groundwater pollution, damage to animals, and decreased plant growth. The solution involves following the 5 R's: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and reconstruct. The Plastic Waste Management Rules of 2016 aim to address the issue by increasing plastic bag thickness, increasing costs, implementing collect-back systems, and making waste generators and retailers responsible for plastic waste reuse. Crowd sourcing is also suggested as part of the solution.
