For the front cover of my magazine I have gathered a range
of ideas from these published popular magazines. From the
magazines I have used the same layout for the headings and
the main cover line of the cover. Instead of putting the name
of the coverstar/key signifier above the main sell line like
NME’s, I have put the coverstar/key signifier of my magazine
underneath my main sell line instead, so that the audience
can see that article is important and is worth reading which
will increase the readership of the magazine and increase the
fanbase of the cover star. In doing this, I could be challenging
this codes and convention as I am doing the opposite of what
the magazine has done.

Print or Digital Magazine?
I will be producing a print magazine as it has more targeted marketing based on
the readers common interests and it is not expensive to produce. In society today,
digital is more popular compared to print due to social media and the levels of
technology and what you can do with it. However, people have started using old-
fashioned items again such as house telephones, record players with vinyls etc so
there is an opportunity that print will be big again and has a chance to become
collectable without having limited readership. The magazines will have control
over a fixed price but cannot handle the advertisement placement and not being
eco-friendly. By using print magazines the reader will not have any issues with
internet connections, viruses/scams or need to zoom in and out to read the article
properly.
Reader Profile
Key Stats:
Male: 66%
Female: 34%
Median age: 23
Student: 35%
Circulation: 23,924
Readership: 289,000
The audience have a strong
relationship with Indigo Leaf and
enjoy their pieces of work.
“I enjoy reading their magazines
regularly”
“The magazines are almost like
collectables”
“We know that the artists enjoy
collaborating with Indigo Leaf”
The Indigo Leaf audience is very
supportive of the magazine and
tends to have a high connection
with it over social media.
The audience are completely
obsessed with Indie music. Their
favourite artists tend to be the
Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths,The
Kooks and Kaiser Chiefs.
Indigo Leaf readers are influential
when it comes to social media.
This is because social media is a
big part of society today an
everyone tends to use it therefore
they are promoting the magazine
whilst talking about it online.

Photography for Magazine
Legal & Ethical Considerations
When planning and making my front cover and double page spread, I have used
my own images therefore I don’t need to worry about copyright issues and don’t
need to ask for permission to use any photos as I took them myself. If i was to use
someone else's images without asking for permission, I could credit the
photographer in my work or underneath the image otherwise I would face
copyright issues and the owners of the work might think that it has been
plagiarised if not credited. Furthermore I will also need the model’s permission as
well as copyright.
Images Suitable for Front Cover and Double Page
Spread
I thought that these images would be suitable for the front cover of my magazine and
double page spread because they challenge the typical Indie genre magazines. They
do this by the type of low-key lighting used as Indie magazines tend to use high-key
lighting and use a more basic pose, for example: a close up of the artists face and a
plain front cover. I thought that the lighting which I have used would attract audiences
as the colours mix well together and tend to create some sort of vibe. The blue and
pink colours are stereotypical of genders (blue for boys and pink for girls) so I have
used both to represent both genders and indicate that the music is for anyone and not
targeting a certain gender. They are suitable for the double page spread because I am
able to make the portrait images to fit on one side of the spread and use the landscape
images on the article side to separate the text/columns to make the page seem more
aesthetically pleasing and not too busy.
A typical Indie magazine would look like

Front Cover - Before & After
Tools Used On Front Cover
On my front cover I decided to use the same style font to keep it
consistent rather than different types. I used different font sizes to
change the headline and subheadings. To insert the picture into
Photoshop, I had to drag and drop the image from my desktop
onto my Photoshop document then the image did not fit the full
document so I had to use the eyedropper tool and fill in the empty
space with colour from the image which created a border on the
left side of the image. In addition to this, to include the barcode on
my front cover, I had to copy and paste the picture of the barcode
on Microsoft Powerpoint then drag it across onto my Photoshop
work and resize it to the correct size and place it needed to be in. I
mainly used the text tool on my work to create the main headline,
subheads, folio and the title of the magazine resizing them each
time.
Double Page Spread Ideas/Draft
Headline- From Nothing To Everything.
Subhead- Topping UK Charts.
Article- Question based? QnA style?
Interview questions:
1. Who are your major influencers in music?
2. When did you write your first song?
3. Is your family musical?
4. What is the most difficult aspect of being a musician?
5. What is your favourite thing about being a musician?
6. How would you define ‘success’?
7. What advice would you give to your fans that want to achieve their dream goals?
8. Are you planning on doing anything big in the next year or two?
9. What would you be doing now if you hadn’t become a musician?
10. Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Why I Chose To Do A Q&A
I chose to do a Q&A (question and answer) as it is targeted towards the late
teenage demographic to early 20 demographic. This appeals to the target
audience as they will be more interested in reading the article as it is short and
snappy and you won’t need to pay full focus on reading as there is only short parts
of text to read. By using a Q&A for an article which will attract late teens - early
20’s it will increase the readership and make the magazine more mainstream as
people will be taking it around college/work to read on their break as it printed and
not digital.

Double Page Spread Draft
In this article draft, I have spelling mistakes in my paragraphs and grammar mistakes as I have not used
capital letters in the questions. Also in this draft, there are 10 questions whereas in the actual article on
my double page spread, there is 9 questions as I wanted to keep the columns inline and to keep it
aesthetically pleasing.
To decide on which layout
and colour I wanted to use
for my double page spread, I
created another double page
spread to help me decide
and overall I have decided
with the purple, white and
pink colour palette rather
than the purple, black and
white colour palette.
In doing this, it allowed me
to use different pictures
which I took rather than just
one and let me decide which
one looked best on the
double page spread. When
creating this, I used the
same techniques of what I
did on the previous one with
the eyedropper tool, paint
bucket tool, shape tool and
the text tool.
