Definitions of Plagiarism
The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the act of plagiarism as;
“to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own”.
Simply put, plagiarism is the process of taking other people’s
words and/or ideas and pretending that they are your own. An
alternative definition of plagiarism is forwarded by the Collins
Dictionary which explains that plagiarism is the practice of using
someone else’s work and pretending that it is your own.
Plagiarism can also be defined as the act of deliberately trying to
deceive your academic tutor by submitting content which is not
your own work.
What is Plagiarism
● To steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s
own
● to use (another’s production) without crediting the source
● to commit literary theft
● to present as new and original an idea or product derived from
an existing source
● In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both
stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward
How to Pronounce Plagiarism ?
● Learn how to pronounce and speak “plagiarism” easily. Listen
to the spoken audio pronunciation of “plagiarism”, record your
own pronunciation using microphone and then compare with
the recorded pronunciation. With the record and play feature,
you can not only hear the English pronunciation of
“plagiarism”, but also learn how to say “plagiarism” in English
on your own.
Why is it necessary to understand
Plagiarism
● There are different reasons for people to plagiarize, but it
always has adverse effects. Most of the time, the students who
plagiarize doesn’t have a complete idea about plagiarism.
Sometimes, they don’t have time to produce an article by
themselves or have fear of failing, and they end up copying it
from another writer or webpage. Many students think that
copying from some already published articles will earn them
good grades, but this is the wrong way of thinking about writing
original work.
How to Know Plagiarism ?
● Plagiarism is presenting work or ideas from another source as
your own, with or without consent of the original author, by
incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.
All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript,
printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition, as is
the use of material generated wholly or in part through use of
artificial intelligence . Plagiarism can also include re-using your
own work without citation.
How to Avoid Plagiarism
● Practice the ethical writing honestly. Keep honesty
in all scientific writings. Crediting all the original
sources. When you fail to cite your sources or when
you cite them inadequately, you commit plagiarism,
an offense that is taken extremely seriously in
academic world and is a misconduct. Some simple
dos and don’ts5 are outlined in
Chat GPT
● Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s work without giving proper credit
or permission. Plagiarism can be intentional or unintentional, but in either
case, it is a serious offense that can have serious consequences. To avoid
plagiarism, it is important to understand what it is and how to avoid it.
Understand what plagiarism is:
● Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s work without giving proper credit
or permission. This includes copying and pasting text from a source,
paraphrasing someone else’s work without giving credit, or using someone
else’s ideas without permission.
● Use plagiarism detection tools: Many online tools can help you detect
plagiarism. These tools compare your work to existing content online and
highlight any similarities. This can help you identify areas where you need to
give credit or rewrite.
Continue
● Use proper citation methods: When using information from a source, make
sure to give proper credit by citing the source. There are many citation
methods, including APA, MLA, and Chicago style. Make sure to use the
appropriate citation method for your work.
● Use your own words: Even if you are using information from a source, try to
put it into your own words. This will help you avoid plagiarism and also ensure
that you understand the information you are using.
● Keep track of your sources: When you are researching, make sure to keep
track of your sources. This will make it easier to cite them later and ensure
that you are giving proper credit.
● By following these steps, you can avoid plagiarism and ensure that you are
giving proper credit to the sources you use.
