5. What is war poetry
Poets have written about the experience
of war since the Greeks, but the young
soldier poets of the First World War
established war poetry as a literary genre.
Their combined voice has become one of
the defining texts of Twentieth Century
Europe.
In 1914 hundreds of young men in uniform
took to writing poetry as a way of striving
to express extreme emotion at the very
edge of experience.
6. The Soldier as war poetry
“The Soldier” was the last of five poems
of Brooke’s War Sonnets about the start
of World War I. As Brooke reached the
end of his series, he turned to what
happened when the soldier died, while
abroad, in the middle of the conflict.
When “The Soldier” was written, the
bodies of servicemen were not regularly
brought back to their homeland but
buried nearby where they had died.

poetry
The typical message in war poem in the
courage and heroism the soldiers reprented
to their countries as they families and save
their own nation . Moreover poems stated
sharing the real view of the war for
example the death of partners causing the
soldiers psychological damage by the year
of 1915
8. Structure and Language
There is not a clearly defined structure to
the poem although Owen does make use of
rhyme mostly on alternate line endings.
The poem opens with a description of
trench life and the condition faced by the
soldiers. Then comes the gas attack the
poem offers a graphic description of the
effects of such an attack
9. Conclusion
In conclusion The Soldier by Rupert Brooke, is a
highly evocative thought provoking piece. It
clearly illustrates people’s feelings towards the
war when it began and the sense of patriotism
that was aroused in the British population. In
hindsight with so many lives lost and the
tragedies or war made obvious the concept of war
and defending one’s country being a glorious thing
is ludicrous.
