Bsdtw17: lightning talks/wip sessions

The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications.
Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addresses many of the challenges faced by developers and operators as monolithic applications transition towards a distributed microservice architecture. A tracing tool like Jaeger analyzes what's happening as a transaction moves through a distributed system. Monitoring software like Prometheus captures time-series events for real-time alerting and other uses. Grafeas and Kritis provide security policy attestation and enforcement. And there are many more.
In short, there's an entire new cloud-native ecosystem growing up around containers. Come to this talk by Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff and learn all about it.

I will introduce Migen, LiteX and Vexriscv, and explain how they enabled us to quickly implement an SoC in the FPGA capable of running Linux. I will also explore other Linux-capable open source RISC-V implementations, and how some are being used in industry. I will highlight that OpenHW Group has adopted the PULP Ariane from ETH Zurich for its Core-V CVA64 implementation. Finally, I will look at what Linux-capable "hard" RISC-V SoC's currently exist, and what is on the horizon for 2020 and 2021. This talk is should be relevant to people who are interested in building open hardware systems capable of running Linux. It should also be useful to people who are curious about RISC-V. Software engineers may find it exciting to learn how Python can be used to for chip-level design with Migen and LiteX, and simplify building a System-on-Chip (SoC) for an FPGA.
MazuV-Debug-System
This document summarizes the MazuV-Debug-System project which implements RISC-V debug specification version 0.13 to enable debugging of a PicoRV32 CPU on a Lattice FPGA board. The debug system uses a Debug Module (DM) to handle debug commands from a Debug Test Module (DTM) over UART, allowing commands from GDB via OpenOCD to halt, step, and read/write registers of the CPU. While it can perform basic debugging tasks, hardware breakpoints and watchpoints are not yet supported.

Is it hard to build games? No, at least not with Cocos2D-x, the free, cross-platform framework that makes it easy to create high-performance games in JavaScript. How easy? Come and watch me make a simple, but complete old school platformer in 60 minutes.
I will show you how to get started. Installation is the worst part of Cocos2D-x, but it isn't too tough. Then we'll put the app together, running it on my laptop as we go. We will also add music, sound, and show you where to find cheap sources for both. Once our game is running, I will blow your minds by porting the game to both iOS and the web. That's right, one app running on a laptop, an iPhone, and on a web page.
As I build, I will talk about all of the things that make Cocos2D-x magical. Things like graphic layers, sprite animation, collision detection, resource management and physics. I'll also demo debugging since bugs are an inevitable part of programming. While made especially for games, you can build any app, which needs to be fast or cross-platform,
Please keep in mind, that Cocos2D-x makes it easy for programmers to create games. If you know JavaScript excellent, but you should be okay so long as you know a curly brace language, like C, Java, or C#. If you don't know how to program, take a programming class first.

The IoT is becoming extremely popular keyword in the industries while there are many different interpretations or various definitions. However, one common requirement is that it requires many Sensor devices connected to Linux devices. The user space drivers for GPIO, I2C/SPI and UART sensors in the past were implemented separately from scratch delicately for each product. This will cause significant challenge of software engineering overhead while GPIO, I2C/SPI and UART sensors are dramatically increasing which have to be supported. The IoTDK is one of the library to provide portability of sensors' driver to solve the situation.
The talk will includes guide of IoTDK and 96Boards and tutorial of programing I2C and GPIO devices. Targeted audiences are who are interested in IoT sensors or who would like to move from Arduino and Raspberry Pi to modern ARM CPU effectively.

Charles Macfarlane, Chief Business Officer at Codeplay Software, presents the “New, Open-standards-based, Open-source Programming Model for All Accelerators” tutorial at the May 2023 Embedded Vision Summit.
As demand for AI grows, developers are attempting to squeeze more and more performance from accelerators. Ideally, developers would choose the accelerators best suited to their applications. Unfortunately, today many developers are locked into limited hardware choices because they use proprietary programming models like NVIDIA’s CUDA. The oneAPI project was launched to create an open specification and open-source software that enables developers to write software using standard C++ code and deploy to GPUs from multiple vendors.
OneAPI is an open-source ecosystem based on the Khronos open-standard SYCL with libraries for enabling AI and HPC applications. OneAPI-enabled software is currently deployed on numerous supercomputers, with plans to extend into other market segments. OneAPI is evolving rapidly and the whole community of hardware and software developers is invited to contribute. In this presentation, Macfarlane introduces how oneAPI enables developers to write multi-target software and highlights opportunities for developers to contribute to making oneAPI available for all accelerators.3rd
SolydXK is a Linux distribution based on Debian that aims to be simple and stable. It includes proprietary software like Adobe Flash and optional closed-source drivers. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change.
