2. Definition
Pilot study is a process that carried out at the end of the
planning phase of research in order to explore and test
the elements.
• Pilot study is a small preliminary investigation of the
same general character as the main study
3. 1. Pilot study Is the whole operation in a miniature
2. It is a trial collection of data to detect weakness in
design and instrument
4. It is a careful empirical checking of all phases of the
study from the collection of data to their tabulation and
analysis
5. Reasons for conducting Pilot Study
1. Process: to assess the feasibility of the process
2. Resources: to assess time and resource problems that can occur
during the main study
3. Management : this identifies potential human and data management
problems
4. Scientific : to assess the response, effect, and variance of the effect
6. Objectives
• To test as many of the elements of the research proposal as possible in
order to correct any part that does not work.
• To test the variables used in the operational definition are actually
observable or measurable
• To pre test the instrument that are going to be used in the data
collection
7. Purposes of Pilot Study
1. To make improvements in the research projects
2. To detect problems that must be eradicated before the major study is
attempted
8. Criteria involved in the pilot study
1. Every research study should have a pilot study/pretest
2. Each pilot study should have a proper sample representative which means
at least 10% of the anticipated sample size
3. The information gathered during the pilot study should be kept
confidential
4. The samples in the major study should not be in contact with the pilot
samples
9. 5. In the pilot study neither the instrument nor the item should not be
discussed with the major study samples.
6. The purpose and hypothesis should be kept confidential
7. Publication of the purpose of the study and methods may bias the
major study
10. Advantages
1. Pilot study tells about the completeness, accuracy, and convenience of the
sampling frame
2. It unfolds the variability within the population
3. It helps in bringing out the inadequacies of the draft questionnaire
4. Shows how effective the training has been
5. Helps in differentiating the serious type of interviewers from the cheat
11. 6. It test the efficacy of the survey organization in the field
7. It provides data for making estimation of time and cost for
completing various phases of the projects and shows way to
effect saving
12. 8. It help to identify the need for the different kinds of equipment's and
vehicle which are necessary during the project.
